After successfully selling his software company for millions, Canadian enterpriser Marcel Lebrun has embarked on a mission to address homelessness in New Brunswick.

Lebrun’s latest project, “12Neighbours”, is a tiny home village providing affordable and secure housing for formerly homeless residents in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. Marcel Lebrun, the founder of this groundbreaking initiative, became a multi-millionaire after selling his social media company to a tech giant. Now, he’s using his wealth to make a significant difference in the lives of the estimated 600 homeless people in New Brunswick.

12Neighbours comprises approximately 75 tiny homes custom-made under Lebrun’s supervision (监管). Despite their small size, these homes are fully equipped with essential devices, including a kitchen, bathroom, and dining/living area, ensuring that residents have a comfortable and dignified living space. What sets 12Neighbours apart is its commitment to low-price housing. Residents are only required to pay 30% of their income to live in the village, allowing them to regain stability and work towards a brighter future.

Furthermore, the 12Neighbours community offers on-site job opportunities, creating employment options for its residents. To enhance safety and security, the village is equipped with gates that close at night and a network of security cameras.

The village is situated on a previously unused land near a shopping center in Fredericton. Lebrun has ambitious plans to expand the village, with a goal of accommodating up to 99 homes on the site. Currently, Lebrun’s factory is producing one new tiny home per week to fulfill this vision.

Marcel Lebrun and his wife have personally invested $4 million into the 12Neighbours project. Additionally, provincial and federal contributions have added another $8 million in funding, bringing the total investment to $12 million.

【推荐1】Peter kept his eyes on the ground. He felt like there was heavy weight on his shoulders as he walked home alone. It was the worst day of his life. His mind would not stop thinking about what happened only just an hour ago on the school soccer field. How could he have missed scoring that goal? He had let his whole team down. He made a stupid mistake, because of which his team had lost the game. His coach might kick him off the team.

As he entered home, his father noticed something unusual, for his feelings were written all over his face. “I lost the game,” Peter said briefly. His father paused and tried to comfort him, but he refused to listen. “I lost the game, Dad. I failed my team. They'll probably never let me play again,” said Peter.

“Soccer is about team effort. You're not the only reason your team lost. If you have a good team, you should support each other. Besides, winning or losing is only half the game. The other half is learning how to communicate with your teammates and learning from your mistakes.”

Peter didn't say anything, but what his father said made him think carefully.

The next day, Peter went to soccer practice with courage rather than fear in his heart.

“Hey, guys,” he said to his teammates. “I'm sorry about yesterday. We were so close to winning that game. 【推荐2】One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen, a restaurant where everyone from the humblest(卑微的)to the most powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man, who looked somewhat disheveled. He was wearing a worn-out hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. 【推荐3】As the President of Ariel Investments, I am often asked how to cultivate (培养) green hands to be qualified for a new job within a short time. My memories take me straight back to the days when I worked for John W. Rogers.

While in college, I worked as an intern (实习生) at Ariel Investments. As the youngest girl of six kids from a single mom, I had very little knowledge of the business world. When I graduated, I decided to return to the company to improve myself.

At the age of 22, my perspective was greatly influenced by lunching with the company’s founder and then-president, John W. Rogers. He told me that I would often find myself in the company of rich and successful people with big titles, lots of degrees and lots of experience. And yet, my ideas could still be as good or even better, he said. This early advice became the guiding force that has helped me throughout my entire career. When I was starting out, I thought my inexperience was holding me back, but John said that it was a good thing. He told me that being inexperienced means that you have a fresh point of view.

As my tutor, John encouraged me to be brave. As my boss, he took some giant leaps of faith to support me. Because of our first lunch and the years of support that followed, I never thought twice about speaking up, raising my hand or taking a seat at the table. Staying in the background was never a choice. But John’s advice came with one important warning. I needed to control my attitude. It’s one thing to be firm but quite another to be rude. Similarly, there is a fine line between confidence and overconfidence. With that in mind, I have had to learn to balance the way I act around others. As someone once told me, “the goal is to be non-threatened and non-threatening at the same time.”
