Having lived in Beijing for almost 12 years, I’ve had plenty of time to travel to different parts of the Great Wall in Beijing. Whether you’re planning to visit the Great Wall for the first time or the 50th, the following destinations are sure to make your trip to China even more worthwhile.

Yongtai Turtle City

The Turtle City, built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) as part of the Great Wall’s “YellowRiver Defense Line,” was completed in 1608. Today, this city is located in the Sitan Township in north central Gansu province.

Getting there: The drive to Yongtai Turtle City from down town Lanzhou takes about 2.5 hours. From Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport, it’s only 1.5 hours.

Laoniuwan

As the locals say, Laoniuwan is where the Great Wall and the mighty Yellow River shak hands. Laoniuwan was built in 1467. Late summer or early fall is a great time to visit this place.

Getting there: Laoniuwan is difficult to get to by public transportation. The best option is to rent or book a car to take you from Datong to Laoniuwan.

Dushikou

Constructed during the reign of Emperor Jiajing (1507–1567), this single-wall section stands seven-meters-tall in some spots. It’s located in Chicheng in Hebei province. Dushikou is best visited in the summer, specifically July and August.

【推荐1】I was 18 years old, fit, strong and ambitious.     1     I saw many different specialists and was finally diagnosed with limb girdle muscular dystrophy (MD).

It was a very difficult time. I had no idea what life was going to throw at me and I was scared. By my late 30s it was advanced and I had transitioned from a walking stick to a wheelchair. I wanted to be master of my own fate, so I had to recognize my strengths and play to my weaknesses.     2

People with MD feel the cold. So why did I want to go to one of the most extreme, cold and inaccessible places on Earth? I’d read about Chris Cope, who wanted to go to the north pole to raise money for MD, and it had appealed to my adventurous spirit:     3     I’m very competitive.

In the two years it had taken to organize the expedition, my muscles had worsened but we pressed on regardless. The unpleasant life coaching and cold training helped me to assess how my body would behave in extreme cold.     4

I had an amazing team around me, but the four different flights we took to get to the inner Arctic ice shelf were nevertheless discouraging. While we were on the ice the runway split and we had to wait for it to refreeze. Once we reached the north pole, I was bitterly cold, exhausted and a complete mess. I was on the ice for the best part of three long days, then walked the final 350m.     5

MD is slowly destroying my life but I have chosen to fill it with experiences and I live life to the full.

A.What I tried to do was consult the doctor about the illness.
B.I wanted to raise awareness about the condition, but I also wanted to find out what I was capable of.
C.One day, I fell down for no apparent reason.
D.Of course, that made me aware of what to expect.
E.What I wanted to make happen was a trip to the north pole.
F.I was well aware of my disease, but I wanted to make a difference.
G.The expedition raised £50000 for charity.
