It was September 10, a warm Wednesday morning. Jennifer, a fifteen-year-old girl, was monitor of Class 908.As usual, she got up early, dressed herself and rushed out to the bus stop without breakfast. She was supposed to arrive at school at 7:00 o’clock because some of her classmates were planning to prepare for the celebration of Teachers’ Day.

When she got to the classroom, some of the students started to decorate their classroom with colorful paper-cuttings and balloons. Others went out to buy cakes, soft drinks and fruit. The blackboard was decorated with beautiful words, which read “Happy Teachers’ Day!”.

Mr Li, head teacher of that class, must have found it strange enough when he got close to the classroom. It was too quiet as if no student was in. He had never thought a complete surprise was waiting for him.

Entering the classroom, Mr Li was greatly surprised to find all the students standing in line, clapping hands and saying loudly “Happy Teachers’ Day!”. The girls began to sing songs for Mr Li and three boys showed their Chinese kung fu talent. So excited was Mr Li that he sang a new English song for all the students. What a wonderful time they were having!

At last, Jennifer, on behalf of the class, stood up, walking to the respectable teacher with the prepared flowers. She was about to present Mr Li with the flowers when she got fainted and fell to the ground. Immediately, Jennifer was sent to the hospital.

Chester was born in a cardboard box with four other cats. He was in a smaller cardboard box marked “free kittens” when Sasha met him and took him home. From that moment on, he loved boxes. In the mornings he sat, licking (舔) his paws and fur with his tongue in the rainbow-colored sunlight. Then he would look around for a box to sleep in.

He slept in hatboxes and shipping boxes, gift boxes and takeout food boxes. He slept in Sasha’s sock drawer, if she left it open. When he was a kitten, the size of a small load of bread, he had slept in shoeboxes. But he grew and grew, and now he was a lot bigger. When he tried to sleep in a shoebox, his furry tummy (肚子) hung over the sides.

Chester didn’t just sit in boxes, though. Sometimes he sat in flowerpots, pans, or laundry baskets. Chester also liked to sit in the bedroom of Sasha’s dollhouse, her birthday gift, with the furniture in a mess. Sasha had to redecorate the dollhouse every day, but she didn’t mind as long as Chester was happy. Sasha’s mom suggested Chester need a fixed house of his own, but Sasha ignored.

One day Sasha came home from school, and she couldn’t find Chester. He wasn’t in the dollhouse, or her sock drawer. “Mom, Dad!” Sasha yelled. “Chester is gone!”

Sasha’s mom looked in the attic (阁楼). There were boxes and dust balls, and even a mouse that had escaped Chester’s notice, but no Chester. Sasha’s dad looked in the kitchen cabinets. There were pots and pans, and the old can of soup he thought he’d lost, but no Chester.

Suddenly, “I found him!” Sasha cried.

The big orange cat was inside her mom’s new glass vase, clear glass with blue and green lines. He curled up in it, his fatty body almost jamming the vase.

Last year, I worked as a young marketing person in a company. It was one of those busy days—management meetings, sales calls, planning my travels, booking hotels and the list was endless. By the end of the day, I was not only tired but was getting angry with myself and everyone around me. It was at this time that Paul invited me to his house.

Although tired, I was excited to chat with Paul and learn through his rich experience in marketing. As I entered through the main door to his house, Paul started singing a song: I have a dream, to help me through in everything…and so on. I was in no mood to listen to his song; I wanted to hear about how he dealt with difficult sales calls!

As I told him about just that, I was totally surprised at what I saw next. Two young girls aged between 17 and 20 walked over to-Paul and hugged him. They couldn’t walk steadily, and neither could they talk properly. Their faces were full of smiles when they heard the song.

Curious to know, I asked Paul who these girls were. I knew that Paul lived in that house but I had never seen these girls. Paul explained, “I also have a dream, a dream to make these girls happy. They are my daughters and they were born as “special children’.” And he further added, “They don’t have a mother. My wife died when they were very young.” He was both mother and father to the beautiful daughters.

I was moved to tears. In the office, no one knew what Paul was going through in his personal life. He never looked for any pity from his friends. In fact, he always helped us and encouraged us to move forward in life.

I finished my tea and made my way out, when Paul said to me, “All of us have dreams.”

In a class I teach adults. I gave the class homework that was to “go to someone you love within the next week and tell them you love them. It has to be someone you have never said those words to before or at least haven’t shared those words with for a long time.”

It doesn’t sound like a very tough homework until you realize that most of the men in that group were over 35 who were less willing to express their feelings. So this was a very challenging homework for some.

At the beginning of our next class, I asked if someone wanted to share what had happened when they told someone they loved them. I fully expected one of the women to volunteer, as was usually the case, but on this evening one of the men raised his hand. He appeared quite moved and a bit shaken.

As he stood up, he began by saying, “Five years ago, my father and I had a sharp disagreement and really never solved it since then. We avoided seeing each other unless we absolutely had to be at family gatherings. But even then, we hardly spoke to each other, So, last Tuesday by the time I got home I had convinced myself I was going to tell my father I loved him. It was weird (怪异的), but just making that decision seemed to lift a heavy load off my chest.”

“The next morning I was up bright and early. I got to the office early and completed more in two hours than I had the whole day before. At 9: 00 I called my dad to see if I could come over after work. When he answered the phone, I just said, ‘Dad, can I come over after work tonight? I have something to tell you. ’My dad agreed with reluctance (不情愿).”

“At 5: 30. I was at my parents’ house ringing the doorbell, praying (祈祷) that Dad would answer the door. As luck would have it, Dad did answer the door. I didn’t waste any time — I took one step in the door and said, ‘Dad, I just came over to tell you that I love you.’”
