A new report released Tuesday by Pethadoop, a platform specializing in China’s pet industry, said cats accounted for 59.5% of all the pets among the 30,000 respondents surveyed for the research. As of last year, there were some 58 million pet cats in China’s urban households, compared with some 54 million pet dogs.

It also shows that China has seen an increase in pet ownership over the years, with people increasingly choosing cats. Globally, though dogs were still more common pets, including the United States and the United Kingdom, cats have emerged as the most popular pet in the European Union lately.

Cats have also turned into a social phenomenon in China and elsewhere, becoming the subject of viral memes (模因;迷因) and videos. Many cat lovers online also identify themselves as “cat slaves” and “cat sniffers,” publicly professing their pet preference.

Researchers attributed (归因) the fast growth of cat pets to the lifestyle in Chinese cities, with some experts also suggesting the feline’s popularity with the young generation’s pursuit of individuality:

Liu Yi, the report’s chief editor, said that many citizens have busy lives and relatively smaller accommodations, thus making cats their ideal companions-it’s easy to raise cats, unlike dogs that require more attention and outdoor activities.

“Our research shows that the majority of the pet owners are people born after 1990 and 1995,” he said. “Young people are looking for freedom and spontaneity (自然;随意) in their lives. and the habits of cats are more suited to their needs.”

Cai, a 27-year-old who works in Beijing, said she recently adopted a cat named Nanako. She added that cats were the perfect pet for “da gong ren”, which means “laborer” or “hard working people.” “I wanted a dog at first, but since I’m quite busy, I wouldn’t have given them enough time,” she said. “Cats are more independent compared with dogs. Nanako has kept me company through my loneliness, which someone like me who works in a big city faces.”

【推荐2】I’ve been in an 18-year love-hate relationship with a black walnut tree.

It’s a unique tree. In late September or early October, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头骨) of you, your children, your neighbors and those that reside next door to them. Umbrellas in the yard are a must while dining in early August, and as for me, I wear my bike helmet while working in the garden.

The black walnut also releases a chemical substance through its roots as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several common plants. There have been many new plant varieties that I brought home with hopes that maybe the black walnut would accept them, but they failed to flourish.

What does work are native plants that naturally grow in the area. Native plants are important to have around since they provide beneficial pollinators (传粉者) like birds, bees and butterflies with seeds and contribute to a healthy and biodiverse environment. Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less stress.

Have I thought of getting rid of this giant pain in my tiny backyard? Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. It’s also protected under the law. Rightfully so. Trees are important to the urban forest and for all of those that inhabit it.

Sometimes I think about my life without the black walnut. I can’t imagine a spring without the birds who arrive every year and loudly sing their songs before dawn. I’d miss falling asleep on lazy weekend afternoons as I look up into its leaves.

Every spring, I wonder what the season holds: What are the chances of being knocked unconscious while barbecuing? Like any good relationship, I’ll never be pleased. I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires. In return, my walnut offers a habitat for wildlife and a reminder.

1. Why does the author wear a bike helmet while working in the garden?
A.To protect the injured skull.B.To prevent herself from sunburn.
C.To avoid being hit by the nuts.D.To reduce the chance of getting bitten by bees.
2. What is the tree’s survival strategy?
A.It attracts beneficial pollinators.
B.It lets out poison to drive away pests.
C.It produces a chemical fatal to some plants.
D.It competes for nutrition with similar species.
3. Which of the following DOESN’T account for the author’s love-hate relationship with the tree?
A.The volume of its fruits may bring inconvenience.
B.The tree outcompetes the native plants in the garden.
C.The tree is home to numerous birds and other creatures.
D.The presence of the tree takes up much space of the garden.
4. The author most probably got a reminder from the tree that ________.
A.it’s better to give than to take
B.trees and plants have their own ways to flourish
C.even a good relationship is not always trouble-free
D.acceptance, instead of resistance, is the better way to be

3】You must have heard about animal migration (迁徙),such as Wildebeests dash across Africa; Monarch butterflies fly across the Americas... But did you know that forests migrate, too?

In his new book The Journeys of Trees, science writer Zach St. George explores an extremely slow migration, as forests creep inch by inch to more pleasant places.

“The migration of a forest is just many trees sprouting (发芽) in the same direction,” St. George writes. “Through the fossils that ancient forests left behind, scientists can track their movement over thousands of years. They move back and forth across continents, sometimes following the same route more than once, like migrating birds or whales.” This has happened over thousands of years, and climate change tends to be the driving force.

Of course, today, climate change is speeding up, and trees can’ t keep pace. Take California for example: It’s getting hotter and drier and scientists estimate that before too long, Sequoia National Park may not be able to keep giant sequoias (巨杉).

“The scientists there had never seen anything like it” St. George says. “They worried, and I think at some point we will lose these ancient trees and that we will have to think about what we do with the places, and whether we should plant new groves where they are easy to grow.”

This is known as “assisted migration” —humans planting trees in other places where they’ re more likely to flourish. But this process carries risks—people can accidentally introduce insects and diseases to new places, where they may wipe out entire native populations. So, St. George writes, there’ s a debate among conservationists and foresters today: Should humans help the trees escape?

“There may be cases where people are probably going to step in and help species move to places where they’ll be more suitable in the future,”St. George says.“So far, there are no huge movements of citizen groups moving trees north. But that is kind of one vision of the future that the people I interview hope to see.”

1. What can be learned about the forest migration?
A.It is very difficult to track the migration.
B.It takes several decades to complete it.
C.It is mainly the result of climate change.
D.It often follows certain migrating species.
2. Why does the author mention Sequoia National Park?
A.To prove the assisted migration carries risks.
B.To stress the park is able to keep giant sequoias.
C.To state scientists are hopeful about the environment.
D.To show trees fail to adapt to climate change.
3. What does the underlined word “flourish” in Paragraph 6 mean?
A.Grow well.B.Become valuable.
C.Develop rapidly.D.Escape diseases.
4. What’s St. George’ s attitude towards helping the trees escape?
A.Supportive.B.Objective.
C.Skeptical.D.Disapproving.
