Marco stared at the blank canvas (油画布) spreading out before him, its stark whiteness almost laughing at his sudden lack of inspiration. He was in his final year of high school, and his art portfolio (画集) was fast approaching its due date in a week. This canvas was meant to be his masterpiece, the crown jewel of his collection, but all his ideas seemed to escape the moment he stood before it. “What’s wrong with me? What should I do?” Marco murmured to himself.

Having grown up in the bustling city of New York, Marco had always found beauty in the chaos. The harshness of roaring cars, the colorful palette of street art, the symphony of diverse tongues and the odd behaviors of the passengers-all served as inspirations for his art. Yet, now, when it mattered most, he found himself lost.

Upset and distressed, Macro walked out, longing to run across something unexpected. Unaware of the duration of his wandering through the streets of the city, Marco chanced upon a small, hidden park he had never noticed before. It was a pocket of quiet amid the urban uproar, which attracted Marco immediately. An old man sat on a bench, feeding pigeons that flocked around him in a dance of fluttering wings.

The old man noticed Marco’s thoughtful gaze and gestured him over. They struck up a conversation aimlessly as if they had been old friends for a long time. In their talk, everything was full of interest from life to art. At last Marco confided (倾诉) his artistic block to the old man. The old man listened intently before offering a piece of wisdom. And then, the old man stood up slowly and patted Marco’s shoulder softly. “Sometimes, the best inspiration comes from the places we least expect. Look beyond what you see.” The gentleman said in all earnestness.

Beautiful Birthmarks: The Power of Acceptance

Whenever you hear the word “birthmark (胎记)”, you probably think of one of those black or brown spots you have somewhere on your body. However, for me, it’s completely different — I have them both on my lips and inside my mouth, which make them quite visible and, to me, ugly. When

I was young, these birthmarks kept making me feel extremely awkward and self-conscious (难为情的). As these birthmarks always drew a lot of attention, people often asked me, “What are those black marks on your lips?” When I told people that they were birthmarks, they usually said, “How strange!”

In pictures, I used to hide my birthmarks by pursing (噘起) my lips, so I would not have to deal with people’s questions. As I was growing up, the situation didn’t get any better. In the school, my classmates would always tease me, making me feel hurt and helpless. In society, I often encountered individuals who would inquire about my birthmarks even before they knew my name.

Such experiences left me feeling disheartened. I felt like people judged me by my appearance without considering my personality.

My birthmarks are caused by a genetic condition from my mom’s side of the family. My mom’s mom has birthmarks on her lips, and my mom’s uncle and my uncle have some on their bodies. I used to try to cover them up with makeup, but it never looked good. I even consulted a doctor, wanting to have surgery to remove them. But when imagining the process, I would get nervous and eventually give up.

Whenever I cried to my mom about them, she would always comfort me and say, “Learn to accept them and see them as beautiful birthmarks.” However, it wasn’t easy for me to accept my own birthmarks. Every time I showed my birthmarks, people would look at me with strange eyes. I began to regret why I had given up on the surgery and chosen to accept my birthmarks.

Gilbert was one of the most rudest boys in the village where he lived. He would rarely pass people in the street without being guilty of some sort of abuse. If a person were well dressed he would cry out, “Play boy!” If a person’s clothes were dirty or torn, he would throw stones at him, and annoy him in every way.

One afternoon, just as the school was dismissed, a stranger passed through the village. His dress was plain and somewhat old, but neat and clean. He carried a cane in his hand, on the end of which was a bundle, and he wore a broad-brimmed hat.

No sooner had Gilbert seen the stranger than he winked to his playmates, and said, “Now for some fun!” He then silently went toward the stranger from behind, and, knocking off his hat, ran away.

The man turned and saw him, but Gilbert was out of hearing before he could speak. The stranger put on his hat, and went on his way. Again did Gilbert approach; but this time, the man caught him by the arm, and held him tightly. However, he contented himself with looking Gilbert a moment in the face, and then pushed him from him. No sooner had the naughty boy found himself free again than he began to pelt (连续投掷) the stranger with dirt and stones.

But Gilbert was much frightened when the man was struck on the head by a brick, and badly hurt. All the boys now ran away, and Gilbert skulked across the fields to his home.

As he drew near the house, his sister Cindy came out to meet him, holding up a beautiful gold chain and some new books for him to see. She told Gilbert, as fast as she could talk, that their uncle, who had been away several years, had come home, and was now in the house; that he had brought beautiful presents for the whole family; that he had left his carriage at the tavern, a mile or two off, and walked on foot, so as to surprise his brother, their father.

David Ballesteros looked at the lawyer. He couldn’t believe his ears. The lawyer told him that his father left the 1923 Singer sewing machine (缝纫机) to him. It once belonged to his great-grandmother and his father considered it his greatest treasure.“That’s very nice,”David said.“But what else? What about the legacy (遗产)? The money? What does it all amount to?”

The lawyer, Mr. Jarvin, put down the will. He felt sorry for David but he thought David’s father had explained the terms of the will before he died. David remembered that his father just told him he’d be passing on his riches, but he never specified the amount — that was what he was trying to find out!

Mr. Jarvin said carefully,“David, no money at all.”“That’s impossible!” David screamed. His father owned clothing factories all over the United States. He was rich! Mr. Jarvin explained that all the money was donated to charity under the terms of his father’s will.

David was reeling (晕头转向) from the shock. He’d lived a life of wealth and now he was left with nothing but an old sewing machine! Mr. Jarvin said to David that his father left him a letter which may explain his decision. David grabbed the envelope. His father’s decision was to leave him a poor man! What kind of explanation could he possibly have for that! He drove back to his apartment just in time to see a van (厢式送货车) pull up.

“Mr. David Ballesteros?”asked the man from the van.“Yes,” David said.“We have a delivery for you, sir.”He gestured to the old sewing machine.“Where would you like it?”David was about to scream“In the trash (垃圾桶)!”but it occurred to him that the old item might be worth some money, so he ordered the man to take it up to his apartment. After the man left, David poured himself a drink and looked at the sewing machine.“I have an MBA. I’m prepared to run companies. What am I supposed to do with a sewing machine, Dad?”he asked aloud.
