Alex was a friendly boy, but he had a bad temper and often found it challenging to control his anger. Whenever something didn’t go his way or if he felt upset, a fiery anger would build up inside him like an angry monster.

One sunny afternoon, Alex went to the playground with his friends, Sarah and Ben. They were excited to play on the swings, slide, and monkey bars. As they started playing, Alex’s turn on the swing was interrupted by another child who cut in line. Alex felt his anger rising inside him, and without thinking, he shouted at the child very angrily, demanding his turn back. Sarah and Ben looked at Alex with surprise, scare and depression. They didn’t like it that their friend lost his temper like a monster and yelled. They stopped playing together.

Alex’s anger not only ruined his own mood but also spoiled (破坏) the fun for his friends and the other children at the playground. Feeling ashamed and realizing the consequences of his actions, Alex slumped (跌坐) down on a nearby bench. He saw his friends playing happily without him, and he felt upset at losing control.

Alex’s memories flooded back when his friends and family were often taken aback by his outbursts. When his best friend, Emily, wanted to play a game he didn’t like, he would shout and throw a tantrum (发脾气), refusing to play with her. His little sister accidentally knocked over his tower of blocks, he would explode in a fit of rage, yelling and stomping his feet.

He had lost a lot of fiends and hurt his family because of his anger. Now he might lose these friends too. He realized that his mean words constantly hurt the people he cared about. He didn’t want to be like a monster anymore, so he decided to find a better way to handle his anger.

Looking at her worn-out sneakers(运动鞋), Sarah felt embarrassed going to school wearing them

“What’s the matter, Sarah? Is there something wrong?” her mother Meghan asked;

Sarah, in a high voice, shouted, “I am sick of these shoes! I am no longer wearing these to my school! Do you know how embarrassing it is?”

Meghan was a single mother working in a nearby town café. She explained, “Right now, we’re on a tight budget(预算很紧).I’ll make sure to get you a new pair next month.”

Sarah picked up her schoolbag and walked to school, giving her mother a dissatisfied look.

The school was going to organize a sports competition and Sarah filled out the form for a 100-meter race.

When one of her friends saw this, she asked Sarah if she was certain about running the race. Sarah didn’t understand what her friend meant.

“Dear, if you have a new pair of shoes, then it’s fine. But if you choose to wear the ones you are wearing now, I’m   afraid you will lose the race!”   the friend said, pointing at Sarah’s shoes. Sarah simply nodded and returned   to her classroom without saying anything.

Later that day, on her way home, Sarah realized she hadn’t eaten her lunch, so she stopped at a bus stop to finish it.

When she began eating, she noticed that a child was standing next to her in poor clothes. Sarah knew the kid needed that sandwich that she was eating since the kid stared at her and then at her food.

Sarah handed the sandwich to the child, who ran up to her, excitedly got the sandwich from Sarah’s hand and began eating it. After finishing the sandwich, the child thanked Sarah, saying, “I haven’t had such a:tasty sandwich in a long time. My father is a cleaner in a house down the street and my mother is a patient at a hospital. Oh, and my name is Sam”

Once, there was a poor boy. He made a living by selling things from door to door. Through this, he could earn some money to pay for his school.

One day, as he was walking from house to house as usual, he felt very hungry and weak. He felt that he couldn't walk even a few steps. He decided to ask for food at a house. So he knocked at the door. He was amazed to see a very beautiful young girl open the door for him. He asked the girl for a glass of water instead of a meal.

The young girl thought he must be hungry and thirsty. So she offered him a huge glass of milk. With a surprised look, the boy drank the milk very slowly. At once, he felt he was full of energy.

"How much do I pay you for this milk?" he asked the girl.

"I do not want any money for this," she replied. "Morn has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness."

The boy thanked the girl from the bottom of his heart and left the place. As the boy left that house, he felt stronger physically. He thought he must do something else to help others.

Years passed by quickly. Both the boy and the young girl grew up. In the girl's youth, unluckily, she fell ill. She suffered from an uncommon disease. It was hard for the local doctors to cure her. Even many doctors with rich experience didn't know how to cure her. Finally, she was sent to a hospital in a big city. There were many excellent doctors and the most advanced skills in the hospital.

Dr. Kevin was a well-known doctor. He was called in by the hospital to examine the girl. When he heard the name of the town that she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit in.

Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a bucket, and then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left bubble gum, lollipops and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend. Everyone except me.

On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package on my desk. I ripped open the wrapping paper and just stared down at my desk. There sat a box of perfumed powder (香粉). The girls sitting near me giggled and went off about the “old lady” gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened. I felt my face turned red as I shoved (胡乱丢) it into my desk.

I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the same girls who had seen me open the powder started talking trash about my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in. “How terrible,” I heard myself saying. “What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn’t even want it.” The girls laughed at my remarks and filed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn’t normally like me to say mean things like that about someone.
