Home to the world’s second biggest freshwater lake, as well as its longest lake, Africa hosts some of the best lakes on the planet. Here are some of our picks:
Lake Assal, Djibouti
Sitting at 155 meters below sea level, Lake Assal is in Africa’s lowest point. Its salt levels are 10 times greater than the sea. As such it is also the world’s largest salt reserve (储备量). Visitors will note there is no wildlife around due to its unfriendly desert climate and super salty water.
Lake Retba, Senegal
Photography fans will love Lake Retba for its breathtaking scenery. Also called the Pink Lake of Senegal, it is an impressive pink-colored lake. The color comes from a type of algae (海藻) that grows because of the large amount of salt in the lake. To see the lake at its most pink, you’ll want to visit during the November to June dry season.
Lake Turkana, Kenya
Lake Turkana is the largest long-lasting desert lake in the world, as well as its fourth-largest salt lake. Lake Turkana is most famous for the vapor rising out of the active volcano (火山) within it. A dream place for bird-watchers, it is home to hundreds of bird species that are only found in Kenya.

When to Go
Ho Chi Minh City is at its finest during dry seasons, between November and March. Lunar New Year (called Tét in Vietnam), which lands between the end of January and mid-February, is a unique time. The city empties out, as everyone travels home for the holiday, and as a result travelers might be limited by shorter opening hours at shops and restaurants. However, it is a quiet time of year married with nice weather.
Celebrate
In the days before Tét, flower traders sail their loaded long boats down river and settle in Binh Dong, District 8, to sell their flowers before the holiday. Walking through the crowds you can admire the beauty of various flowers.
What to Eat
Pho rolls may be the darlings of traveling TV chefs (厨师) but for vegetarians (素食者) there’s no beating the Banh Mi Oopla made with fried eggs, soy sauce and lightly pickled (腌制的) carrots.
If ever there needed to be an excuse to eat chocolate, Marou Chocolate is a perfect choice. Marou is a Vietnamese chocolate company that buys cacao directly from nearby farms and pays double prices to encourage growers to produce high-quality cacao through environmentally-friendly practices.
Souvenir to Take Home
Take a walk down Le Cong Kieu, nicknamed(别名) Antique Street in District 1, and pick up a pair of stylish glasses, brass sculptures or other strange tchotchkes. Old, hand-painted posters on Ton That Thiep are both beautiful to look at and provide an understanding of the wartime Vietnamese culture.

14 mountains are over 8,000 meters high, among them the K2, Nanga Parbat and Mount Everest, at 8,848 meters, the world’s highest mountain. The Himalayas extend over 1,500 miles(2,400km) from the Indus valley in the west to the Brahmaputra Valley in the east.
Many of the mountain peaks are sacred to the people who live in the surrounding areas . Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims go there and pray to God.
The Himalayas belong to the youngest mountain ranges in the world. They were formed when the Indian subcontinent, which was originally a part of the southern landmass, drifted to the north and crashed into Asia. This movement started about 70 million years ago and has been going on up to the present day. The Himalayas are still becoming taller, moving at about 7 cm per year. Earthquakes and volcanoes are evidences that the area is still very active.
Glaciers and permanent snow fields cover the higher regions of the Himalayas. They are the source of streams that flow into the two big rivers of the region. The Indus flows to the west and through Pakistan into the Arabia Sea. The Ganges and Brahmaputra flow to the east and get together in Bangladesh. They form the largest delta in the world.

Marble Chapels, Patagonia
The Marble Chapels are an absolute must when visiting Patagonia. The stunning caves are located in the middle of General Carrera Lake, which makes them accessible only by boat. The Marble Chapels arc layers of calcium carbonate formations resulting from wind and water slapping the rocks. The best time to visit is in the austral summer, from December to March.
Yosemite National Park, USA
One of California’s crown jewels, Yosemite National Park is an outdoor playground for nature enthusiasts. The protected park is approximately3108 square kilometres, and it features towering sequoias, dramatic waterfalls, beautiful mountain ranges and sheer granite towers. May or June is the best time to see the waterfalls.
Great Barrier Reef, Australia
One of the world’s greatest spectacles also happens to be one of the most vulnerable. Whether you choose to view this global treasure from a helicopter or go diving to enjoy close encounters with tropical fish, it’s hard not to notice the direct impact of climate change. Warmer temperatures have led to amounts of coral bleaching. If the damage continues at the rate, more than 90 percent of the living coral will erode within the next decade.
Blue Grotto, Malta
Malta is known for year-round warm weather, ancient cities, dazzling beaches, and the Blue Grotto: a series of caves that form high arches along the southern coast of the island.
