At the 2022-23 China High School Basketball League (CHBL) national Finals on May 14, sportswear giant Nike announced that it would build an environmentally friendly basketball court that uses recycled sneakers as raw materials. The court is scheduled to be completed in Guangzhou by the end of July.
Cooperating with the China School Sports Federation, Nike launched the environmental protection charity project for the CHBL 2022-23 Season. The project encourages the involvement of CHBL players’ coaches, basketball enthusiasts and consumers in the collection and recycling of old sport shoes. Through advanced technology, thrown-away sport shoes will be processed and used in the construction of the first ever CHBL-themed eco-friendly basketball court.
Over the past two months, the old sport shoes collection bins have traveled alongside the CHBL tour making stops at the four major regional tournaments held in the east, west, south and north of China. The bins have gone into schools, including Tsinghua High School in Beijing and Huipu Middle School in Taizhou Zhejiang province, spreading the spirits of CHBL and inspiring its players to become role models not only on the basketball court, but also in their everyday lives.
Famous female basketball player Han Xu has actively contributed to the collection of used shoes and expressed her support for the project through her personal social media channels. Zhang Lei, secretary general of the CSSF, says that CHBL not only assists young players and teenagers in improving their basketball skills but also promotes the development of basketball culture within campuses.
“In addition to expanding the league’s size and influence, we have also added environmental education into the program. Environmental education plays an important role in shaping society’s core values. It guides young individuals toward understanding the importance of environmental issues, forming a proper attitude on the relationship between humans and nature, and raising their environmental awareness and practices. It serves as an endless source of developing environmental consciousness throughout society.”
The construction of the eco-friendly basketball court marks a significant step in Nike’s commitment to supporting young basketball fans while putting environmental sustainability (持续性) at the first place.

【推荐1】Used clothes are rather difficult to deal with. They are made from chemicals, cotton, or wool, which consume many resources in the process of manufacturing and, if burned, they pollute the air and increase the carbon pressure upon the environment. Therefore, it is a good thing for used clothes to be recycled in factories instead of being disposed of in garbage cans to be incinerated or transported to landfill sites. In that sense, the companies that put the donation boxes in communities have done something good and beneficial.
However, if they mean to recycle used clothes, they need to tell people that and label their collection boxes as "recycle boxes" instead of misleading people by calling them "donation boxes". People expect their "donated" clothes to go to the poor, not factories.
People need to be more realistic as well. Donating clothes may not bring much help to the poor. Especially, as it takes a lot of human labor to collect the used clothes, sort them, clean and disinfect them and deliver them to less-developed areas. Every step costs money and sometimes the total cost might even be higher than buying new clothes in large quantities. Sometimes the poor might not need used clothing, but they cannot trade the clothes for what they do need.
It might be a sad fact, but the most effective and efficient way of helping poor people is donating money and letting them get what they need themselves. So, when people want to send a helping hand, they need to donate money, instead of simply donating their used, unwanted clothes.
1. What is the first paragraph mainly about?A.The donation boxes should be put more in communities. |
B.Unwanted clothes can be recycled in donation boxes. |
C.Putting donation boxes in communities is right for companies. |
D.Used clothes should be recycled in factories. |
A.The poor don’t need clothing donations any longer. |
B.Recycling these used clothes needs much more money. |
C.Donation boxes are intended for collecting unwanted clothes. |
D.The clothes in the boxes are to be recycled at last. |
A.The poor cannot get help from it. |
B.The factories cannot benefit from it. |
C.It’s not convenient for the residents. |
D.It gets the communities into trouble sometimes. |
A.Supportive | B.Disapproving |
C.Indifferent | D.Doubtful |
【推荐2】Drive through any suburb in the US today, and it’s hard to miss the bins that have become companions to America’s trash cans. Recycling has become commonplace, as people recognize the need to care for the environment. Yet most people’s recycling consciousness extends only as far as paper, bottles, and cans. People seldom find themselves facing the growing problem of e-waste.
E-waste rapidly increases as the techno-fashionable frequently upgrade to the most advanced device and the majority of them end up in landfills(垃圾填埋地). Some people who track such waste say that users throw away nearly 2 million tons of TVs, VCRs, computers, cell phones, and other electronics every day. Unless we can find a safe replacement, this e-waste may get into the ground and poison the water with dangerous toxins(毒素), such as lead, mercury, and arsenic. Burning the waste also dangerously contaminates the air.
However, e-waste often contains reusable silver, gold, and other electrical materials. Recycling these materials reduces environmental problems by reducing both landfill waste and the need to look for such metals, which can destroy ecosystems.
A growing number of states have adopted laws to ban dumping(倾倒)e-waste. Still, less than a quarter of this waste will reach lawful recycling programs. Some companies advertising safe disposal(处置)in fact merely ship the waste to some developing countries, where it still ends up in landfills. These organizations prevent progress by unsafely disposing of waste in an out-of-sight, out-of-mind location.
However, the small but growing number of cities and corporations that do handle e-waste responsibly represents progress toward making the world a cleaner, better place for us all.
1. What can we infer from the first paragraph?A.Most of America’s trash cans are made of recycled material. |
B.E-waste cannot be put into trash cans in the US. |
C.Most Americans have realized the dangers of e-waste. |
D.Many Americans now have access to recycling bins. |
A.reduce. | B.heat. | C.absorb. | D.pollute. |
A.Progress is being made in handling e-waste. |
B.A growing number of states ship the e-waste to developing countries. |
C.A large number of cities have begun to handle e-waste responsibly. |
D.The world will become cleaner by disposing of waste in an out-of-sight location. |
A.To tell us how to recycle e-waste. |
B.To talk about the future of e-waste. |
C.To encourage us to deal with e-waste properly, |
D.To discuss if it’s necessary to recycle e-waste. |
【推荐3】Blue whales are the largest animals on the planet, and each year they undertake (进行) one of the longest migration (迁徙). After spending the summer in the Northeast Pacific, the whales travel thousands of miles to their breeding (繁殖) grounds off the coast of Central America.
To learn more about these behaviors, William Oestreich, a PhD candidate in biology at Stanford University, and his colleagues planted an underwater microphone, or hydrophone, just outside Monterey Bay and recorded whales’ songs over five years.
Only male blue whales are known to sing, but both sexes move southward at about the same time each year. Males and females have also been spotted pairing up and feeding together shortly before the migration begins. “That gives us some confidence that the sounds that are primarily being produced by males are fairly representative of what the whole population is doing,” Oestreich says.
During the summer, the songs picked up by the hydrophone took place mostly at night. The intensity of the songs reached the highest level each year between October and November. However, as winter approached and the songs dwindled, the whales changed to singing during the daytime. In the summer, blue whales spread out over vast distances while searching for food. By eavesdropping on (窃听) their distant neighbors at night, the whales may gather information about food conditions elsewhere in their range. Knowing when other whales are on the move could guide their decision about when to stop hunting for food and start their own journey toward milder waters.
By turning in too, we might be able to forecast when the whales will arrive in areas where they’re in particular danger of running into ships, such as the Santa Barbara Channel. “There have been quite a noticeable number of deadly collisions (碰撞) between ships and blue whales,” Oestreich says. “That could be one piece of the puzzle (拼图游戏) to more dynamically (动态地) managing those habitats and shipping paths in a way that allows shipping to continue, but also in a way that is safe for these whale populations.”
1. What is the researchers’ purpose in doing the study?A.To identify different whales’ songs. | B.To prove the function of the hydrophone. |
C.To better learn about blue whales’ migration. | D.To search for more blue whales’ breeding grounds. |
A.Males mostly sang at night in the summer. | B.Females occasionally sang to attract males. |
C.Males and females migrate at different times. | D.Males and females seldom pair up before migration. |
A.Functioned. | B.Reduced. | C.Reappeared. | D.Strengthened. |
A.Shipping paths need reducing. | B.Avoiding collisions is possible. |
C.Blue whales’ habitats are recovering. | D.Blue whales are in danger of extinction. |

Canadians are generally considered to be conservative (保守的) in their food tastes, but actually, the ability to enjoy different kinds of foods is highly regarded in Canada. A Canadian family may eat Italian food one night, Chinese food the next, and then Greek or Japanese food. Eating in Canada will provide you a good chance to enjoy various foods and get in touch with different cultures. Canadians often invite people to dinner. It’s customary to arrive on time for a dinner party and to bring along a bottle of wine or a small gift, such as flowers or candy. Food is not brought unless especially asked for by the host. Some meals may include appetizers(开胃菜), soup or salad before the main course. A typical main course includes meat or fish, potatoes or rice, or one or two vegetables. Dessert is usually served with coffee or tea at the end of the meal.
To show that you enjoy a meal, it is polite to praise the quality of the food. Be sure to accept a second helping if you like the food and are not full. But in some other countries, it is polite to refuse up to three times before accepting a second helping.

Do you know what British teenagers worry about most? A survey by the UK’s Department of Health shows that the top worries are losing weight (减肥) and fitting in (适应). Over 100,000 teenagers took part in the research.
Losing weight is a big concern among teenagers. This may be an effect of famous people with perfect bodies around them.
Adolescence is a physically and emotionally difficult time. Teenagers want to feel good about their bodies.
It’s also important for them to be accepted. Many teenagers were picked on (作弄) in high school. “Who should I eat lunch with?” “Who should I hang out with?” “Will I be accepted?” These questions are troubling many UK teenagers, according to the survey.
It’s interesting to see that family background has an effect on teenagers’ worries. Teenagers from low-income families worried more about losing weight and bullying (欺凌弱小). Teenagers from higher income families were more likely to worry about fitting in and peer pressure (同辈压力).

From this, we can see that women are much more careful while driving. Another very interesting fact that we should point out is that in the past, women preferred to let their husbands be the only driver in the family rather than have a driving license. Somehow they were prevented from making this step in their lives, but nowadays there are many women that want to pass their driving tests from an early age.
However, we have to admit that men are more skillful drivers than women, but this does not mean that a woman cannot become a good driver by accumulating (积累) experience. So more and more teenagers and women around the age of thirty now want to pass their driving tests. While taking their driving lessons, they also have a number of special lessons with their parents or somebody in the family that has a driving license, this is just to improve their driving abilities and help them to pass the tests more easily.
To conclude, we can say that women are not such bad drivers. They just need more experience than men in order to be able to drive well. And on the other hand, there are a number of women that show better driving skills than the men around them.
