As we all know, May 22, 2021 was a sad day for the whole nation because Yuan Longping,     1     hybrid rice helped China feed more population with less than 9 percent of the world’s total land,     2     (pass) away at the age of 91.

In the past, it was difficult for Chinese people     3     (get) enough food. Yuan was determined to solve the problem. “China has a large population but     4     (limit) arable land（耕地), so the only way for     5     (we) to make sure our national food supply is to increase crop yields,” he said.

Nearly half a century     6     (go) by since Yuan Longping developed the first strain of hybrid rice in 1973, and     7     the end of last year farmers in more than 40 countries had planted more than 7 million hectares of the crop.

Yuan Longping’s contribution has been     8     (wide) recognized. His death is a great loss to China and the world, and he will always     9     (remember) by the people all over the world. In my opinion,we should never forget Yuan Longping, a great scientist    10     (serve) the people heart and soul.

In 1899, when Einstein studied at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, his tutor(导师) was Minkevsky, a mathematician(数学家).

Once Einstein asked Minkevsky, “How can     1     person, like me, leave his footprints on the road of life and make an outstanding contribution in the     2     (science) field?” It was a complex question. Minkevsky said he had to think about it carefully before     3     (give) him an answer.

Three days later, Minkevsky told Einstein the answer was coming! He took Einstein towards a building site and there they set foot on the ground newly covered by cement (水泥) ,     4     of course, led to the workers blaming them. Einstein was     5     (confuse), so he asked Minkevsky,“Sir, haven’t you led me the wrong way?”

“Can’t you see?” Minkevsky said. “On the old road surface that has long solidified（凝固） and in those places which     6     (pass) through by countless steps, you cannot leave your footprints.”

Hearing that, Einstein thought long and nodded     7     (serious). From then on, his creativity was inspired. He said, “I never memorize and consider     8     dictionaries and manuals (手册) contain, for my brain only memorizes those things not     9     (include) in books.” It was in this way     10     Einstein left his deep footprints in the history of science.
