I was a bad boy in a village in India. At least I was labeled that way because I had no interest in school or studies. I used bad language, hung around with other “bad” boys, skipped school and ran through the fields. No one thought I would do anything worthwhile with my life. And I’d heard many people in our village talking. “Why bother going to school? These kids end up back on the farms anyway. He’ll never amount to anything.” My parents and teachers were disappointed with my average marks.

My mother envisioned a different future and knew the value of education to create a better life. By the time I entered the 12th grade, I had taken a good look at myself and realized the life I was creating. The bad boy image troubled me. I didn’t believe I was a bad boy. I didn’t want to be a bad boy. These realizations forced me to acknowledge that my mother was right — education was my only way out. I worked hard to finish my high school, and then I decided to apply for higher education in university. But this village bad boy faced too many challenges.

Firstly, my family had very limited money. In addition to that, my grades were not good. There was very little chance I’d gain admission to a university. Still, I took a chance and applied. The last day of admissions, I visited the university to check my result. I looked down the list, and there it was, “Parashram J. Patil”. Finally, I’d been admitted. Now, it was the last day to pay, so I had to find money to cover my fees.

People use the proverb “seeing is believing” to describe situations where it’s hard to believe something is possible if you haven’t seen it happen. I am here today to tell you that the proverb is true and to share with you how a girl and her grandmother made a positive transformation in a community.

It was a year ago when I was studying life cycles in my science class. I wrote a paper about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly (帝王蝶) and received a perfect score. I was so thrilled; I called my grandmother Nana and told her the exciting news. My talk recalled memories from Nana’s childhood. “I remember when I was a girl,” she said, “those orange and black butterflies were a common sight. Come late summer, there would suddenly be hundreds of them, and before long there were so many it felt like you were standing in an orange cloud.”

“It sounds like you witnessed a migration (迁徙), but what happened to them?” I asked. “To be honest, I’ve never known,” Nana admitted. “But there do seem to be fewer monarchs around the neighborhood.” Nana and I decided to investigate.

That weekend, we met at the public library. Our research produced plenty of information: some fascinating and some concerning. Apparently, the number of monarchs has been in decline for the last several decades. Housing developments have destroyed much of their habitat (栖息地). Some information was hopeful, though, like how conservationists are working to save them.

The best was this — it doesn’t take lots of money or equipment to do so. It takes only a little bit of land, some seeds, and dedicated people to create what’s called a Monarch Waystation (驿站).

“What if we set up our own Monarch Waystation?” I suggested. “We’ll need people to help.” Nana responded immediately and didn’t waste time to get started.

Dora is a seven-year-old girl. One day, when she visited her friend Alice, she saw a beautiful bird in a cage on the balcony of the house. Alice told her it was her new pet. “How beautiful it is!” Dora said. “I also want to have such a bird as my pet.”

That day when Dora returned home, she told her mother about Alice’s bird. Then she asked, “Mom, can I also get a bird?” “Of course, you can,” her mother replied. “But you need to wait because I have no time to go to a pet store these days.” Dora agreed. One day, when Dora was back home from school, she saw a cage in the living room. In the cage was a beautiful blue bird. Her mother was standing next to the cage, smiling. “Oh, a bird!” Dora shouted happily. She ran to it and looked at it happily. “It’s a birthday gift for you,” her mother said. “Thank you, Mom. I love it so much!” Dora shouted excitedly.

The following day, Dora invited her friends to come over to see her bird. All of her friends said it was a really beautiful bird and Dora was very glad to hear that. She and her friends played with the bird for a long time that day. Her friends all wished they could have such a bird as their pet.

Sadly, a few weeks later, Dora became sick. The doctor told her parents that she got the flu and had to stay at home. In order not to make her friends sick, her parents asked her friends not to come to play with her. Dora felt very sad. How she wished her friends would come and visit her! But she knew her parents were right. She’d better stay alone. Since Dora had no one to play with, she could only play with her bird. However, she felt that her bird didn’t seem to be happy either.

My husband gave me a surprise gift for Christmas-a gift that, at the time, seemed strange. It was something I would never have chosen for myself and would never have expected him to give me. He gave me a little bird, a cute, colourful conure (鹦哥).

She often bit me at first, but she quickly became the sweetest, most beautiful little creature and she brightened up every day. I looked forward every morning to her crawling under the collar of my bathrobe for a warm hug and a chirp (啁啾) in my ear.

A few months ago, I would never have imagined myself owning a bird, but now she had wrapped her little self firmly around my heart.

A couple days ago, she seemed a little off, not quite herself. She was struggling to fly. So, I brought her to the vet (兽医), and she was much more ill than I could have imagined. Her situation was serious, but she made it through the night. After a couple days of slow improvement, when it was starting to look like she was almost out of the woods, her condition suddenly took a turn for the worse.

I was shocked. I cried all the way to the vet to take care of her. This little, lively spirit became an important part of my life, but suddenly she fell ill so seriously.

When I walked into the clinic, I saw a woman with a girl, who must have been around 12 years old. She looked sad, carrying a cage with a sick bird in it. I didn’t want to disturb the girl, so I tried to be quiet while talking to the woman behind the counter. However, it was clear that the girl heard our talk. She knew I arrived to take my sick bird home to look after her by myself. She showed great concern and pity to me. When I was leaving with my sick bird, the girl came to me.

The girl told me she could attend to my bird.
