I grew up in a small town in Mississippi, where everyone knew each other and family was everything. My big brother, Jake, and I had always been close. We shared the same hobbies, friends and dreams except that I wanted to go to college, travel the world and make a difference.
However, everything changed when our father passed away. He was the glue that held our family together and without him things fell apart. Jake took over the family business, and continued to run our father’s auto shop, which was struggling to survive in the competitive market. I tried to help Jake, but also wanted to achieve my own goals. I applied to several universities across the country, hoping to get a scholarship. I was thrilled when I got accepted to Stanford in California, one of the best universities in the nation.
But Jake was not happy for that. He felt abandoned by my decision. He criticized me for being self ish and ungrateful, turning my back on our family and roots. He said I was wasting my time and money on a fancy education that would not help me in the real world. He said I should stay at home and help him run the shop, as our father would have wanted.
I tried to reason with him that I loved him and our family. I said I would come back after graduation, or maybe even sooner if he needed me. And I was proud of him for taking care of the business. I promised we could still be close, even if I was miles apart.
He was angry and refused to accept my choice. He said he did not want to see me or talk to me ever again. He even mentioned I was no longer his brother, but his enemy.

Arthur was messy. He didn’t try to make messes, but he didn’t try to clean up much, either. There were always small pieces of food on the table when he was done eating. His socks never made it into the hamper (洗衣篮). And he only picked up his toys when Mom threatened to throw them away. Most days, Mom followed Arthur around the house and cleaned up after him. She brushed the crumbs (碎屑) into her hand and threw them away after meals. She picked up his socks and made sure they got washed, dried and folded neatly before going back in the drawer. She often picked up his toys when he left them to do something else.
One day, Mom asked Arthur to pick up his toy trains. “Not right now,” Arthur said. He was reading a comic book. The trains had been on the living room floor since the morning.
“You know what, Arthur? I’m not going to ask you again. I’m done cleaning today.” And with that, mom put her feet up on the sofa and picked up a book to read.
At dinner time, Arthur noticed that there was a big pile of crumbs at his place at the table Mom’s spot was nice and clean. Arthur didn’t like the crumbs very much. After dinner, Arthur’s feet felt cold. He went to his room and opened his drawer, but the drawer was empty. “Mom, where are my socks?” Arthur called.
“There weren’t any socks in your hamper, so I didn’t wash them,” Mom said. Arthur felt unhappy. Now his feet would be cold, unless he wanted to wear dirty socks from the floor. He decided to stay barefoot.
When it was time for bed, Arthur said good night to Mom and turned to go upstairs. Arthur stepped right on his toy train in his bare feet. “Ouch!” cried Arthur. “That really hurt!”

Aaron was very excited when he heard about the summer camp. It would be more than a week-long experience with no parents around! Besides, they would play games and have campfires. And also a sports competition would be held between teams from different camps, and Aaron loved sports.
As a mom, Lucinda didn’t want him to go, because the camp was miles away, and he was just ten.
“All of my friends are going. mom! Please! I want to go!”
“But honey.” said Lucinda, “we could do something different this summer. . . perhaps a family trip?”
“No, Mom!” Aaron insisted (坚持说). “We always do that. . . Please, Mom! Please!”
At Aaron repeated request, Lucinda agreed finally. Aaron went to the camp happily.
Four days later, Lucinda received a sudden phone call. “What’s the matter, honey? Why are you crying?” Lucinda asked, worried. Aaron cried, “Take me away from here, Mom. Please!”
“But why? What happened?” asked Lucinda.
“There’s a running competition tomorrow among different camps, but they wouldn’t allow me to attend. Other boys are all older than me, and they think I can’t compete with them. I feel very bad, Mom.”
Lucinda walked to her bedroom and took out a file (文件夹)from a drawer (抽屉). She then drove to Aaron’s camp. She went to the camp director’s office.
“Sir, I’m Lucinda Jones. My son Aaron is in your camp. I came here because of what happened to him,” she explained. “Aaron told me he wouldn’t be allowed to join your upcoming competition because he’s younger than the other kids. He was very sad. He has great potential (潜力) for sports. Could you please give him a chance?”
“Well, Mrs. Jones,” said Mr. Harrington. “Didn’t Aaron tell you they’re all 13-yeard-olds? Aaron is only ten.”

Kat was learning to adapt to the new home, but Aunt Lucy sensed that deep inside her niece was a place that no one could reach. She had set up a barrier to keep herself from others since her parents passed away. She made friends at school, but never had close friends. Kat was a loner and too proud to tell anyone why she lived with her aunt. Back home, in Kat’s heart, not her own home, she often helped do housework but was unwilling to participate in any entertainment. It seemed that she was interested in nothing. Kat even told Lucy that she didn’t ‘want to go to school. Aunt Lucy decided to do something to change all that.
Aunt Lucy was a teacher and her home was filled with books. Lucy got an idea that it might be helpful to lead Kat to a world of books, where Kat could heal (治愈) herself by reading. She told the young girl there was a wonderful world in the library. “Read, and you will learn where you came from and where you’re going. You will understand more about life and dreams, baby.” Sitting on the doorway side by side with Kat, Lucy said. Kat looked up at the moon in the sky with her hands supporting her head. “Dreams?” Kat repeated the last word of her aunt and seemed to ask herself. “Yes, dreams. You can become anybody you want to be, a movie star, a scientist, or a sport legend.” Aunt Lucy put her arm on Kat’s shoulder and answered her niece. Kat turned to her aunt and said seriously, “I want to be a doctor to help children who lose their parents.” “But you have to get an education first,” Lucy told her.

Three days earlier, 12-year-old Michael had disappeared from his campsite in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. He had loved and read the books about young boys surviving in the woods alone. However, a massive search had passed and there was hardly any sign of the boy. People were about to lose hope when one dog, named Gandalf, stepped in.
Misha and Gandalf, her two-year-old dog, had trained for a year with the South Carolina Search and Rescue Dog Association. But this was their first real job, and Misha decided she had to cooperate well with her dog.
After leaving home in the early morning, Misha gathered with her team members, and they headed to the mountains. All they found in the whole morning was some thin slices of fried potato. They were west of Michael’s campsite along a fire road that ran deep inside. Then they found footprints leading to another path and then to a stream about a quarter mile from the camp. It was a fairly good path, but they lost the tracks at the stream.
Now the sun went down and the temperature began to drop below freezing. Thankfully, Michael had been wearing a red coat and good boots. Misha breathed a sigh of relief and hoped the boy had found shelter.
Worried as she was, Misha remained calm. She took out the bag containing the shred (碎片) of Michael’s shirt and let Gandalf sniff it. Head up and nose high, the dog started up the path. Misha concentrated on the search ahead. She didn’t want anything negative to cloud her focus. “Michael is alive. We’re going to find him,” she told Gandalf.
Night was coming and it was time for the researchers to turn back and go downhill. It seemed that Gandalf wouldn’t stop. He ran to the left, out of sight behind the edge of the cliff (悬崖). Misha turned the bend, trying not to be left behind.

Police chief Matthew Bruce’s son, Adam, came late into his lives, so he always spoiled him and never said no to him for anything. As Adam grew older, he began to take his parents’ love and concern for granted, as if it were permission for him to do whatever he pleased. There were certainly times when he was criticized for bad grades or sneaking out of the house, but that was limited to only minor blame. Adam thought that if he pretended to be an “ideal” son, he would have to face absolutely no blame from his parents. So he began to act like a good son in front of them while engaging in all sorts of wrongdoing behind their backs, such as breaking the law. However, Adam always got away with it.
One day, Adam was driving back from a party with his friend Freddie when he began over-speeding. Freddie warned him to slow down, but Adam didn’t listen. Adam’s driving worried Freddie. He asked Adam to slow down again, and when Adam didn’t, he grabbed the steering wheel himself, causing the car to slide off the road and ran into a tree on the side. Then they heard the alarm of a police car behind them. The car came to a stop in front of them, and a police officer approached them.
“I’ve been following your car for a while now, and I’m afraid I’ll have to take you to the station for speeding. May I have your driver’s license first?” the police officer said.
Freddie was scared. “Here’s my driver’s license, sir,” he said, offering it to the officer. Adam tried to explain that he was the police chief’s son, but the police officer turned a deaf ear to him. They drove him to the station, and when Adam stepped inside, he was surprised to see his father there. He had been called to the station for an urgent case.

It was an unusually quiet day in the emergency room. Quiet, that is, except for the nurses who were standing around the nurses’ station complaining about having to work on Christmas Day.
I was triage (分诊) nurse that day. Since there were no patients waiting to be seen at the time, I came back to the nurses’ station for a cup of hot cider. Just then an admitting clerk came back and told me I had five patients waiting to be evaluated. “Five, how did I get five? I was just out there and no one was in the waiting room.” I complained. So I went straight out and called the first name. Five bodies showed up at my triage desk, a pale woman and four small children in somewhat messy clothing.
“Are you all sick?” I asked suspiciously.
“Yes,” she said weakly, and lowered her head.
“Okay,” I replied, unconvinced, “who’s first?” One by one they sat down, and I asked the usual questions. When it came to descriptions of their presenting problems, things got a little vague. A six-year-old girl had a headache, but the headache wasn’t accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Three children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough, but seemed to work to produce it.
Something was wrong with the picture. Our hospital policy, however, was not to turn away any patient, so we would see them. I checked the chart after the admitting clerk finished registering the family. No address—they were homeless. The waiting room was warm.
I went back to the nurse station and mentioned we had a homeless family in the waiting room. The nurses, complaining about working on Christmas Day, turned to sympathy for a family just trying to get warm on Christmas. The team went into action as much as we do when there’s a medical emergency. But this one was a Christmas emergency.
We took turns joining in the waiting room.
