The annual campus singing competition was around the corner, and posters covered the school walls, urging students to show their vocal talents. At the sight of the posters, Emma’s mind went back to that fateful day when she faced an expectant audience, their eyes fixed on her, eager to hear her sing. But as she brought the microphone to her lips, a surprising silence surrounded her. The microphone was out of function. Immediately panic surged (涌现) through her like a sudden thunderstorm, leaving her at a loss under the spotlight. The song that should have filled the room with her pleasant voice remained unsung. Then having a spare microphone didn’t prevent Emma’s performance from being influenced, resulting in her failure to secure a place.
Emma had been fond of singing from a young age and music used to be part of her life. But this deep love for singing had been overshadowed by that awful memory.
Emma paused as her eyes fell on the singing club’s invitation. She considered it for a moment. The wounds of the past still hurt. Then she finally ignored the posters and the bold advertisements as she always did. She still had no courage to overcome the barrier and step forward.
Then, on a rainy afternoon, just after a shower, something magical happened. A poor butterfly, whose shinny wings were burdened by raindrops, fell on Emma’s desk through the open window. The downpour had weighed down its delicate wings, making it temporarily unable to fly. This poor little creature caught Emma’s attention.
With a gentle touch, Emma’s finger reached out and softly brushed the butterfly, as if guided by a wave of compassion (同情). She whispered some soft words of encouragement, “You can do it.” Surprisingly, the butterfly responded to her support with determination, tirelessly waving its wings. After several attempts, the delicate creature finally took flight, dancing gracefully into the open skies.

I jumped into my mother’s car and threw my cross-country (越野) team bag into the backseat. “I’m so sick of it!” I said, “Training is less tiring than dealing with Jenny and her feelings.”
The training has been going for weeks: stretching, running, pacing, lifting weights and making u into a team. Jenny is always the goddess of cross country. She is a coach’s dream. She helps all of un faster by upping the pace. She cheers us on. She trains harder, but so do we. We are co-captains. However, this week, Jenny keeps saying she won’t run with the team. She has all sorts of reasons from leg cramps (抽筋) to a headache. I have to beg her all day, between classes, at lunch, on the way to practice. She really wears me out.
“What’s her deal? We’re all tired of it. She’s so needy.” I complained.
Mom pulled into our driveway and shared with me Jenny’s story. Jenny and her little brother have been together all this time in foster care (寄养). They’re really close. But his father, Jenny’s stepfather, came for him this week. He had gifts and hugs and big plans for the boy’s future. But Jenny got nothing. She wasn’t even a little part of the big plans.
“Poor Jenny, not to have a family. Not to feel wanted or needed.” I was close to tears. My mother patted my knee. “That’s it, honey. You got it.”
The next day, I was the last one to get on the team bus. Then I spotted Jenny. She was sitting in the back, alone. “Can I sit by you?” I asked Jenny. She shrugged her shoulders. I took it as a yes. “I was afraid you weren’t going to make it today.”
“I didn’t think anyone would notice if I made it or not.” Jenny said.
I looked at Jenny. I understood what she was really saying. “We would have noticed if you weren’t here, Jenny. We want you to run with us. The team needs you.” “Isn’t that right?” I called to the team. There was silence.
Please, I thought, give Jenny what she needs.

When I was a teenager, my mother had a hard time finding me onstage (在舞台上) in the dancing show. I was always in the back row,out of sight, out of mind. Sometimes the stage lights didn’t t even reach me, and I ended up dancing in the shadows.
I didn’t t start out that way. As a kid, I was a confident dancer. At eleven, though, I put on weight. I still danced through my routines with energy, but I was always placed in the back row. My teachers didn’t remember my name half the time.
In high school,I put on weight. I wanted to join the dancing club. However“You need to lose weight,”my teacher said. I walked out of the class and never returned.Dance was still part of my life, though.I took classes off and on at another school and at my university. Finally, I decided to start performing in flash mobs (快闪行动). While I had no interest in making it a career, I enjoyed my projects. I danced well, and I was chosen. The show kept inviting me back. More often than not, I was placed in the featured dancers’ group.
There was only one problem: Though I had fun, I still believed in those teachers from childhood instead of myself. Deep down, no matter what anyone said to me, I still thought that I was a terrible dancer.

2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
At one performance, the director of the flash mob company, Staci, finally called me out.

I managed to stop my friend Timmy’s bike in a fashionable way at the end of the narrow road in the neighborhood. If I rode just a little further, I would come to a wide road of my city. When I stopped the bike, I saw Timmy running to catch up. I was grateful to him. He had taught me how to ride a bike. Now he was teaching me how to stop the bike in a special way.
When he neared me, he congratulated me on my first successful stop. Seconds later, my dad came up. He always seemed to be strict. He didn’t want me to do anything I liked. When he came up, he said angrily, “I suppose if I allow you to ride the bike, you will agree to keep off the city road?” “But we don’t get on it,” I replied.
He shouted, “You were close enough! If you had slid one more foot, you would have been there. What if a car had been coming? This road is dangerous. It goes through the hills. Tall trees line the road, and there are many bends. If you get on the road, a driver may not even see you coming! I didn’t buy you a bike just because of the dangerous road!”
I was really sad. It wasn’t until a few weeks later that I got a chance to ride the bike again. It was a perfect afternoon. My parents weren’t at home. Timmy and I took the opportunity to ride his bike.
With Timmy’s encouragement, I dared to ride with no hands on the handle bars for the first time. Later, Timmy said, “Why don’t we try riding down the hill fast?” I knew that it wasn’t allowed. But finally, I agreed. Timmy rode down while I waited for him to come back. When he rode back, he said, “Incredible! Do you want to try it?” I said, “Yes!” I was excited because I was going to try something disallowed. I felt daring and free.
