As my parents worked a late shift, my three small sisters looked at me. “What’s for dinner?“ one of them said. The last time I made dinner was when I made pizza in high school. Now, I had three mouths to feed—ages two, six and nine—but I was short on ideas. Like a deer in headlights, I searched for a possible answer.

“Where’s the Twister (转盘游戏) game?”

“Not Twister,” Abby, my oldest sister, scolded, “Dinner. ”

I walked to the closet, pulled out the game. and tested the spinner (转盘). Then I slid a couple of sheets of paper between the plastic arrow and the cardboard base and divided it into four quadrant (象限). I looked at my sisters.

“Who wants chocolate?” Alice, my youngest sister, screamed happily. Abby crossed her arms. “Mum wouldn’t let that happen. ”

“Mum’s not here. ”I wrote in the upper right quadrant: chocolate. Andy, my middle sister, asked, “What are you doing?”

“You’ll see in a second.” I pointed at the second area. “How about noodles?” Alice started dancing around in a circle.

“When we get four options written on the spinner, we’ll spin to see what we do for dinner tonight.”

My youngest sister said, “Dress up like superheroes. ”

“Absolutely!” I wrote superheroes, with no idea how that would turn into a dinner idea, hoping the dial would land somewhere else. They debated the final section for a few seconds and then collectively decided on pizza. If they had suggested ”Run around at the mall“, I would have written it down. I set the spinner in the middle of the table. We gathered around the spinner, and I held up my hands. “We are going to spin it once, and whatever we land on、that’s what we’ll do tonight. ”

Abby shook her head. “I don’t think this is a good idea.” “It’s okay, honey. Mum will understand. ”

Alice yelled, “I want to spin it. ”Alice’s try sent the little, plastic arrow flying around and around until it landed on... pizza. Everyone shouted, “Pizza”, including me. I still had no idea what we were going to do. Abby looked at me. “But what are we going to do?”

In my twenties, I went far from home to study in America. Due to limited financial resources from my parents, I worked part-time on campus to pay for my bills. In addition, I did cleaning every Friday for an American family. If I was lucky enough, I could occasionally babysit a child for extra money.

Like most poor people, I had to be careful with every penny I spent, from food and clothing to rent and transportation. Because of a tight grocery budget, I couldn’t afford to buy fish, beef or certain other nutritious food. Due to an imbalanced diet, I would easily feel weak and listless.

As soon as Dai Mom realized that I was encountering financial hardship, she lovingly invited me to her home for dinner every Friday and weekend. In addition, whenever it was time to return home, she would always prepare me with some homemade dessert or food to take home. Her kind actions, like the seeds of love planted in my heart, profoundly changed my life. In particular, there was one event that I would always remember.

One early evening, while I was walking out of the library, I felt my blood sugar running low. I started to feel dizzy, and my hands started to shake a little. Searching my pockets, I found that I only had a few dollars left. I was dying for a free and tasty dinner. Without a second thought, I quickly headed for Dai Mom’s home, rather than go back to my apartment.

As I got to the door, Dai Mom immediately noticed my fatigue(疲劳). She seated me at the dining table, and before long, a plate of food was set in front of me on the table. “Have dinner. Don’t make yourself work so hard,’’ she said to me with a nice smile.

Staring at the meat, vegetables, and fish on my plate, I suddenly felt so spoiled that tears started welling up in my eyes, rolling down on my face, and dripping to the food on the plate. I gobbled up all the food with indescribably bitter-sweet feelings.

A Fortunate Escape

Max, Ben and I were walking home together while I bit into the brown beef burger I had grabbed from a shop nearby. “Truth or dare, Ben?” Max questioned. It was a game we usually played to amuse ourselves on the lengthy, boring journey home. Ben wanted a dare. “Well, Ben, I dare you to carry my bag all the way home!” Max commanded.

As Ben pulled the heavy bag up his shoulder and adjusted the bag belts, he noticed that Max’bag was partly open. When he quickly turned it around, an object flew out of the bag, and over the fence of our neighbor’s house.

“Oh, no,” Max shouted, “I think that was my English homework!” Stretching his hand out and trying to crawl (爬) under the fence to get the paper, Ben found that it was just out of reach.

“Well, I guess I’ll have to climb over the fence to get it,” Ben complained. He was barely able to climb up, using small gaps in the wooden fence as handholds, as the fence was nearly as tall as him, and low enough for something to be thrown over it.

Sliding down the fence, Ben grabbed the valued piece of paper, complaining about injured self-respect. Just then, a loud and terrifying bark cut his words short.

“Woof, woof!”

Our neighbor, Mr. Mason, owned a German Shepherd (德国牧羊犬), known for its fierceness, which guarded the house. It was something we had overlooked, too focused on getting back Max’s homework. Ben’s legs trembled uncontrollably and his face turned a deathly white as the German Shepherd advanced slowly on him like a wolf approaching its target.

Max and I stared at it, frozen with fear. Ben backed up against the fence, attempting to climb up, but a loud bark stopped him in his tracks. I desperately searched my mind for a silver of an idea about how I could assist Ben. Should I climb up the fence and help Ben? Or could I do something to distract the dog?

Sabrina and I were in gym class together. I was quiet and kind. She was a bully(仗势欺人者). She and her friends enjoyed harassing(骚扰)me on a daily basis.

I was less than athletic. That day, we had played soccer. I not only embarrassed myself, I also made Sabrina mad — basically because she was on my team, and we didn’t win. So, in the shower, she threatened me! “I will meet you after class,” she sneered(讥笑).

Immediately class was over, I slid out the teacher’s entrance and ran to my locker where Susan, my older sister, was already waiting for me, so we could walk home together.

“What’s up with you?” she asked, noticing the look of panic in my eyes. “Sabrina!” I choked. “We lost the soccer game in gym and it was my fault.”

“Oh,” Susan simply stated. “Well,” she said, “we will walk down Seventeenth South instead of Harrison. It’s out of the way enough that Sabrina won’t find us.”

Next day, in the math classroom, Sabrina’s best friend passed me a note that stated, “At lunch, you will pay for running away!” I didn’t even look up, but I accidentally swallowed my gum and felt a severe pain in my chest. Mr. McKonkie excused me going to the nurse’s office.

Walking down the hall, I felt a slight sense of relief and freedom. But suddenly someone hit me on the shoulder from behind. “You little chicken!” Sabrina’s voice sneered. I didn’t turn around. I started running down the hall. I had no idea what she was going to do and I was extremely scared.

Sabrina was now rushing after me. At last, she caught up with me enough to kick the back of my legs, trying to knock me down. In a panic, I swung around to the stairs. Sabrina was so close to me by then that my sudden change in direction knocked her off balance and she fell down the stairs. I stood there watching her fall.
