There are many reasons why some cats are bad-tempered. It’s commonly believed that their temperament can be influenced by the way they are born or raised.     1     According to veterinarian Dr Katrina Warren, the problem can generally be solved, but you’ll need to look for underlying issues.

Changes in a cat’s behaviour can often be explained by a health problem. Pain can cause cats to behave differently. It’s easy to mistake a problem as behavioural, which in fact is medical. Should you observe a significant change in your cat’s behaviour, then a visit to the vet is the best place to start.     2     Also hiding and avoiding being touched. Be sure to report all changes to your vet. There are many health problems that can be readily treated to ease symptoms and pain for your cat.

It pays to remember that cats don’t like to share or queue. Sharing of ‘resources’ such as litter trays and foodbowls can cause stress and anxiety for many cats. It’s always a good idea to provide each cat with their own litter box, food, water bowls and bed. A lack of space to hide from or avoid other cats, competition for territory and lack of individual attention can also add to household friction.     3

Moving to a new house, the arrival of a new baby, new pets and other types of change can seriously impact cat behaviour. Cats are creatures of habit and tend to be territorial.     4     Try to keep your cat’s environment as calm as possible and ensure there are places where they feel safe.

5     These are often cats that received limited socialisation with humans when they were kittens. These cats do best in a quiet household without children and need understanding and patience to help build their confidence.

A.Some cats simply do not like being touched and handled.
B.Watch out for changes in eating, drinking or litter-box habits.
C.When your cat seems lonely, you can hold it gently in your arms.
D.If so, offering the cat a high place to sit, such as a climbing tree, can be helpful.
E.So a change in routine may cause them to react, including withdrawal or aggression.
F.Don’t forget their incredible sense of smell, which is a useful tool of communication.
G.In fact, even the sweetest cats can suddenly become bad-tempered and behave out of character.

【推荐1】It is the beginning of a new school year, but for many, it may be their last. Many say that senior year is the best year of high school, but be careful.     1    . Here are the things that you should not do during your final year of high school.

The first thing is procrastinating. It is a bad habit, and it is extremely harmful when you get to your senior year. You need to plan your schedule wisely so not only can you get everything you need done, but you can also enjoy some time for yourself or with friends.

The next thing you should not do is be unhealthy. Being unhealthy in both mind and body is going to be hard to avoid during your senior year.     3    , not to mention all the stress that this year is going to cause you. However, being healthy will help you greatly. Getting a good night’s sleep, eating good food, and exercising can help your body stay healthy, which will overall benefit you and make the days easier.     4    . You can read a book, take a warm bath, or talk to someone; just do something that will calm you down.

5    . While you should be careful about your schoolwork and habits, remember that this is your last year of high school, so enjoy it. Give yourself some time for yourself. That could be just staying in and watching movies with your family, or going to a party with your friends.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了关于感到无聊的问题,分析了无聊背后的原因以及如何改变这一情况。

【推荐2】Are you really boring? Or is it just in your head? The first crucial step, which you absolutely mustn’t skip, is to question this idea that you are boring, check it rationally (理性地), and try to determine if indeed it’s true.

You see, of all the people I’ve coached over the last 7+ years who believed they’re boring, getting to know them and their conversation style, for well over half of them I’ve concluded that this belief was just in their head. It was a false, limiting belief; and they came to see that too. So, statistically, there is at least a 50% chance that you’re not really boring. Think about this, very seriously.

If indeed you discover that the idea you’re boring is mostly a limiting belief, then it’s important to begin ignoring it and change your behavior accordingly. Try to open up, talk to people more and be more social, reminding yourself it’s okay to do so.

More important thought is to understand that the limiting belief you’re boring reflects a lack of confidence, and work on fixing this deeper issue. Only by learning to believe in yourself and gaining self-confidence will you be able to fully and permanently dismiss the perception that you are boring.

Now, confidence building is no invaluable process. It involves certain steps and actions, which if done correctly, lead to visible progress at a rapid pace. I lack the space here to go deeper into this topic, but I have created a special presentation in which I discuss it in detail.

Go here to watch the presentation and learn my step-by-step process for improving yourself-confidence and social confidence, which has been used successfully by hundreds of people before you. And make sure you watch it all the way.

1. Why does the author ask two questions in the first paragraph?
A.To criticize the phenomenon.B.To introduce the topic interestingly.
C.To ask readers to answer them.D.To show the author’s questions.
2. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?
A.When we feel boring, then we are really boring.
B.The belief that we are boring just doesn’t exist.
C.Over a half people who are boring are not really boring
D.The statistics show that people actually don’t feel boring.
3. Why do we hold the limiting belief that we are boring?
A.Because we have plenty of time and have nothing else to do.
B.Because we lack confidence and deeper work on the issue.
C.Because we don’t work on fixing this deeper issue.
D.Because we should dismiss the perception of being boring.
4. What is the presentation mentioned in the last paragraph about?
A.Certain steps and actions to improve one’s self and social confidence.
B.Some step-by-step process to lead to quick progress in learning.
C.Some step-by-step process to lead to success in the future.
D.Tips to help bored people to relieve their stress in lack of confidence.

【推荐3】In a recent interview, Lisa Feldman Barett, Professor of Psychology at Northeaster University, offered some advice to older people to help them keep their cognitive skills as finely tuned as possible.

Challenge yourself on a regular basis, she urged, but don’t just do so casually. Study any new topic hard, until you feel tired and frustrated. This level of effort, she added, is associated with increases in the ease of communication within the brain and, as a result, cognitive skills will be improved.

Her advice is based on a study of “superagers”, individuals of 65 years or older, whose cognitive skills are as acute as the average 25-year-olds. Lisa believes that what sets superagers apart is their ability to use the unpleasant feelings they experience when challenging themselves as a signal to keep going, rather than as a warning to stop and rest.

While she provides convincing data to prove how cognitively young these superagers are, I’m not sure her conclusion about why this is so gives the whole picture.

Are superagers simply those who ignore, or even welcome, the pain and frustration that comes with intense mental effort? Or is there some other reason why they spend so much time and effort challenging themselves?

This is important, because if the only way to maintain youthful cognitive skill is to expose ourselves regularly to pain and frustration, it doesn’t make old age look particularly inviting.

Contrary to her opinion, I think “enjoyable” is the key. If what you’re doing is enjoyable, you’re more likely to keep working hard at it—probably without even noticing any discomfort.

Making yourself work until you’re exhausted and frustrated holds it little appeal. On the other hand, finding an activity you love so much that you don’t even notice when you’re pushing yourself hard seems a far more attractive way to keep your brain active as you grow older.

1. What does Lisa advise older people to do?
A.Work on in spite of feeling bored.B.Push themselves hard in new fields.
C.Relax by communicating with others.D.Do whatever they like casually.
2. What makes the “superagers” special according to Lisa in the third paragraph?
A.They can respond to warnings in time.B.They have the ability to adjust flexibly.
C.They use their unpleasant feelings as driving force.D.They can make use of disadvantages in work.
3. What does the author doubt?
A.The data that the study provides.
B.The conclusion that “superagers” are acute.
C.The idea that cognitive skills can be improved.
D.The reason for “superagers” keeping brains active.
4. What does the author agree with?
A.Unpleasant feelings do harm to people.
B.Cognitive skills improve slowly with age.
C.Enjoyable work makes people ignore discomfort.
D.Doing appealing work makes people look young.
