It had been one of those terrible days. My three-month-old son, Tate, had not napped all day and now lay with his head on my shoulder, crying at times. I looked around. Laundry was waiting for the washing machine, dirty diapers(尿布)were giving out a smell, and the kitchen was also a mess and not to mention preparing dinner for my husband. I surveyed my dirty and disorderly little world. Tiredness and boredom washed over me, leaving me lightheaded and upset. When would this day end? Who could give me a hand?

For the last couple of weeks, I had managed to have the house cleaned and dinner well under way when my husband Jim got home from work at the end of the day. He worked in a company all day and I got to stay home with the baby. It seemed like a fair trade. So I struggled to offer him a comfortable house and a delicious dinner when he arrived home. Actually, Jim had been very impressed and he was always generous to say I had done a good job. His understanding and praise made me very happy with myself. Once a while I thought how smooth my life was!

This week, however, everything changed.

Tate was not in normal state. He was getting his first tooth, which made him uncomfortable. Nothing seemed to relieve his pain for long. He seemed glued to me all day. He felt painful so he had a hard time having a short sleep. Therefore, I was unlikely to spare time to manage the housework.

Now it was 5: 00 pm. My husband, Jim, was on his way home. I heated leftovers(剩菜)while holding my crying little guy. I felt more and more anxious. Then I heard the door opened and Jim came in. He surveyed the mess in the kitchen. “Not a good day?” When he turned to me, he didn’t need an answer. He could see I was tired and still in the sweats.

Amanda felt as gray as the sky outside when she looked across the table at her little sister. Li sat on her seat, drinking from her cup.

“Mom, why does Li hate me?”

“Honey, she doesn’t hate you. Li is still getting used to you,” Mom said. “It’s only been two weeks.”

“But look,”   Amanda took a cookie off her dish and held it out to Li. “Want to eat it?”

As soon as Li saw Amanda reaching over, her eyes widened. Li quickly got down from her seat and raced to her room.

“See?” Amanda said to Mom. “I thought being a big sister would be fun.”

Over a year ago, Amanda’s parents said that they were adopting (收养) a daughter from China, and Amanda had danced with excitement. She’d dreamed of taking her sister to the park, reading books to her, and teaching her to ride a bicycle. That hadn’t happened.

“She runs away whenever I get close,” Amanda said.

Mom took Amanda’s hand. “Think of how frightening it is for her. She’s in a new country with a new family.”

“I just wish I knew how to help her,” Amanda said, thinking of Li’s frightened eyes.

Amanda went into the family room and sat down on the sofa. How could she help Li? She’d sung songs to her, drawn pictures for her, and made funny faces. None of that had worked.

Amanda turned on the TV. She stopped to watch a film about a dog and a cat. The film was in another language. The show looked funny, but she didn’t understand any of it. It made Amanda remember when they were in China. She had gotten frustrated (沮丧的) when people talked in Chinese.

That’s it. Amanda turned off the TV and sped to her room. She found the CDs Aunt Linda gave her last year to help her learn some Chinese.

Amanda tiptoed (踮着脚走) to Li’s room. Looking in, Amanda saw Li curled up (蜷缩) in a ball on her bed. She could hear Li sobbing (啜泣). Amanda knocked on the open door.

Li moved to the back of her bed.

Like the Christmas before, we didn’t send Christmas cards; we called my family in Canada. Ginny and I talked to my mom. We spoke to my uncles and aunts. I hadn’t seen any of them in seven years and Ginny hadn’t met them yet, but she hoped to one day.

Those calls were completed, but I couldn’t relax. I still had one more call to make, and I was afraid. I paced up and down inside the room. I wasted time at my computer. I needed to call but I couldn’t.

Five years ago, I received an e-mail from my brother. At that time, I had been out of work for several months. My life was very stressful. My brother’s e-mail was nothing terrible but it made me angry.

I wrote back. As I typed, my anger grew. Months of frustration (沮丧) flowed into my unkind response. I said things that were not nice, but I sent the e-mail without hesitation. More thoughts occurred to me. I wrote a second e-mail.

I screamed abuse at my brother in the emails. I didn’t care if I ever heard from him again.

The next day I received another e-mail from him. I didn’t read it. I just deleted it, and then I blocked his e-mail address.

For five years, he tried to get through to me but I ignored him. I had lived with this terrible guilt. I thought about contacting him, but was ashamed of myself for what I’d said.

It was time to fix it. I picked up the phone and stepped outside. I wanted privacy. Ginny didn’t know I was calling my brother. I took a deep breath, blew out a cloud of my breath into the cold December air, and dialed (拨号) his number. Even after five years, I still knew it by heart. A phone rang 3,700 miles away in Nova Scotia.

As one as I can remember, it is more than 5 years since Dad left us, whom we missed very much. And what we are supposed to do now is accompany Mum very well, caring for her as much as possible. Mum cherishes everything from Dad, especially the thing that gives her a beautiful memory.

Yesterday, after telling my brother Rhys, and me to stop playing like wild animals, Mum went to take a bath. We were having a pillow fight when suddenly one hit a vase. Mum heard the loud crash. Wasting no time, she went wiping into the room. I was sure that she was going to shout at us, but instead she just knelt by the pieces and began to cry.

This made Rhys and me feel pretty awful. My mom explained to us why she was so upset. In the pieces lay a broken glass rose, one pedal (花瓣) gone, which was given by Dad on their first wedding and anniversary. Dad had said that if he ever forgot to bring flowers home for an anniversary in the future, Mum was to look at that one. It was like their love: it would last a lifetime.

We began crying, and offered to glue it. But Mum said that wouldn’t really fix. Now that it had been broken, the value of the “limited edition” had reduced. Tears kept coming down her cheeks.

With great regret, I put both my hands on her shoulders and begged her to forgive us. Mum remained in sadness. And I continued to comfort her, “All things can be broken, Mum. But the only thing that cannot be broken is our love, which is the strongest thing that can never be broken.” Hearing this, Mum seemed to be a little relieved. Turning to me and looking at me in the eye, she responded, “You are right, my son.”

Mum hugged me very tightly and finally smiled.
