It was still light out, and Dad wasn’t home yet. He worked all day cleaning pools in South Port, Florida. Mom told us we needed to wait for dinner, so all of us could eat together. If Dad was late, it meant I could have more time outside to play basketball with my brother.
A few years ago, when life was normal, and some of Dad’s customers who had lost their jobs told him they couldn’t afford to pay Dad to clean their pools anymore, Dad bought us a backboard and hoop (篮框) and paid someone to install a basketball court.
My brother and I would shoot baskets from morning to night if Mom let us, but she said homework always came first. Still, during the summer months, we spent much of the day on the court. We practiced all sorts of shots-hook shots, fade-away jumpers, foul shots, layups (上篮), shots from the corner and tried to sharpen our dribbling (控球) skis. Holding a ball and sending it into the air and waiting for it to drop into the basket felt like magic-all the problems of the world seemed to fade away — and I felt like I was the magician making the magic happen each time I threw the ball toward the basket and watched it fly toward its destination.
Dad once told me he felt pretty much the same way about cleaning pools. It was one of the things Dad and I shared — the ability to see magic in things. Lately, though, it didn’t seem like Dad saw a lot of magic anywhere. Yesterday he came home and told us he’d lost more customers.
I could tell he was worried when he came home each night. I squeezed past my brother to put in another layup when I heard Dad’s old truck chugging around the corner.
“Hey, guys!” Dad said as he got out, with tiredness, and he couldn’t hide the worry in his eyes. In that moment his face was caught in the fading rays of the sun, and the light revealed a lot more wrinkles than I remembered.

The “Ugly” Christmas Doll
The sidewalk was filled with shoppers as my mother and I hurried to the department store. I raised my neck to look at the holiday window show, but at the age of six, I was too small to see it. When at last we reached the store, I stood with my eyes wide. “Look, Mother,” I shouted, pressing my hands against the glass, “Bobbi (芭比)”. Before my eyes was the most beautiful doll I had ever seen! She wore a fairy princess suit, a pair of crystal shoes, with a shining crown (皇冠) on her golden hair.
“If only (要是……该多好) she were mine,” I dreamed. “We would have tea parties, share secrets and dance with a handsome prince.” But to my disappointment, my mother guided me away from the window, explaining that she and my father could not afford such an expensive doll. “But there will be a very special gift under the tree for you on Christmas morning, Maggie,” she said, “I promise.”
Later that week I stood by Mother’s sewing machine (缝纫机), watching the needle flash up and down. “You don’t know what this is, do you?” She joked, holding up the doth for me to see.
“My Christmas doll!” I shouted, “So much to my surprise!”. It was still in the early stages but I could make out its head, neck and body. Mother laughed as I danced around the room pretending Bobbi and I were at the ball.
My excitement grew with each passing day. Mother continued to work on the doll, and whenever I walked into the room she would hide it under a pillow. I could tell by her smile that she was satisfied with her work. On Christmas morning I jumped out of bed, ran down the hall and quickly arrived at the living room where the Christmas tree was placed.

Raelene seemed to be in trouble with her mother. It seemed like her mother was screaming all the time. Raelene couldn't bear it. She tried to keep to herself and out of her mother's way. At times she shut herself in her room but her mother would follow her in, still shouting at her and telling her to do things.
One day, when her mother had been screaming, Raelene went outside to get away from it all. Her pet dog, Crystal, came running up to her, tail wagging, but Raelene had had enough and screamed at Crystal. Crystal dropped her tail between her legs and turned around to run off, looking for a place to hide. Raelene saw how Crystal had run away when she screamed. She thought how it was like what she did when her mother screamed at her.
At school, Raelene was studying science and had learned about experiments, so she decided to carry out an experiment with Crystal. She sat down on the ground, closer to Crystal's height where she could see Crystal's nose and eyes peeping (偷看) around the corner of the house. Raelene began to talk to Crystal in a soft, gentle voice. This was the experiment. What she said and how she said it were different. Her words said Crystal was a bad dog for running away and hiding. However, she said it in a gentle, loving, and caring voice. Soon Crystal moved out from around the corner and came back with her tail wagging and her whole body full of excitement.
Raelene continued her experiment. She now told Crystal what a good dog she was and how she was the only person who seemed to understand Raelene-- but how she did it was in a loud, shouting voice. Crystal again dropped her tail between her legs and ran around the corner.
“This is interesting,” thought Raelene. She now used the same loving words in a gentle, loving voice. Again Crystal emerged and rested her head on Raelene's lap.

When Mom said we had to give away Sam, I didn’t say a word. I just picked up Sam and walked out to the shed (棚) that used to be Dads workshop.
What Mom said to me wasn’t a surprise. I saw it coming.
My name is Nathan. Sam is my cat. Not long before Dad died, he found Sam behind his store. No one wanted a little cat, so Dad brought him home. Sam is black, with wise eyes and big ears. But all most people notice is his big white feet.
“Meow?”
Sam knows I’m upset. I wonder if I could explain to Sam about Anna. She’s my younger stepsister (继妹), and if it weren’t for her, I could keep Sam. But I don’t explain, and Sam couldn’t understand his situation. He likes to run up and down in the shed’s dusty sunlight.
No one uses the shed now except our elder neighbors, Mr. Sims and Mr. Irvin. They make wind chimes (风铃) to sell at the market. Dad used to help them. I grew up loving the sounds that filled our shed. Mom says people love those chimes because their music is mixed with laughter.
I wonder how things are going to change now that I have a stepsister. Last week we had to take Anna to the hospital quickly. She couldn’t breathe. Mom thinks it was because Sam slept in her room. Anna is allergic (过敏的) to cats. Mom told me that Sam had to be sent away. She asked me who was more important, Sam or Anna. I couldn’t answer.
“Isn’t there anything else we can do?” I ask. I look at Sam. Sam is playing with things left over from the wind chimes. When he hits metal against metal, it rings loudly. Sam is happy. But I’m not.

Finding the Real Me
I had thought losing my job was the worst thing that had ever happened to me. But it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Losing my job was not the end of who I was but literally the beginning of discovering the real me.
It started out as one of the best days of my life, and certainly, of my career. My staff and I had been named the number one unit in our company, and I was taking them out for a celebratory lunch. Lunch was fun, the food was excellent, and the friendly atmosphere at the table made me smile. The weather was crisp, cool and sunny. I thought to myself “It just doesn’t get any better than this.” It was a perfect day!
Then came the teleconference at two o’clock as usual.
“Er, if you... if you are willing to move?” stuttered our associate director, voice trembling, “and if you cannot move, you will be given a severance package (遣散费), and ...”
How could this be happening? I felt numb, my world slowly coming to an end. My husband and family comforted me, but I was scared. Financially, I knew we would be okay. But I had worked full-time my whole life and it had become my identity — who I was and how I defined myself. I was a leader, and I felt, a good one. What would I be with that taken from me?
After sitting around feeling sorry for myself, I just casually turned on the television. A program caught my attention — a group of volunteers were helping children and hungry people all over the world. It struck me! I felt guilty knowing that even though I had lost my job, we had plenty of good, healthy food on the table every night. The words spoken by a volunteer seemed directed specifically at me — The best way to be blessed and to forget about your own problem is to help someone else. Ashamed, I realized that I had been abandoned to self-pity when I had so much to be thankful for and to do — a loving husband, beautiful children, and family and friends who needed me.

For almost every morning, the sun rose to greet the day and the birds sang its songs outside an upstairs window of the house. Inside, Jeff and Jenna would wake up.
Usually, the brother and sister got along very well. They took turns nicely with the bathroom. They said “please” and “thank you” at breakfast. They often sat together on the school bus. Afterschool they worked together happily on their special project—their own backyard house.
But one gray morning they didn’t get along well at all! Maybe it was the weather, or maybe the birds slept late. But whatever it was, they got into an angry argument.
Jenna opened her eyes and stretched. Then she sat up and let her legs dangle (悬挂) over the edge of herbed—right in Jeff’s face. She didn’t mean it. It was just one of those things that happens with a bunkbed (双层床).
That morning Jeff was not in a very good mood.
“Jenna!” he shouted. “Get your silly feet out of my face!”
“My feet aren’t silly, and they’re not in your face!” she shouted back.
Before Jeff could answer, she skipped into the bathroom ahead of him. She took a very longtime brushing her teeth, washing up, and combing her hair.
“You’d better come out of that bathroom!” shouted Jeff, banging (猛敲) on the door.
“Jeff, ”said Mama, coming out of her bedroom, “you know better than to shout at your sister.”
“But she’s taking too long in the bathroom,” complained Jeff. “And she’s doing it on purpose!”
When Jeff banged on the door again, it opened and out came Jenna, all dressed up.
“Good morning, Mama,” she said, taking no notice of Jeff at all.
