Best Language Learning Apps of 2024
Duolingo
Duolingo encourages you to make a habit of practicing with a reward system and a social component. You’ll receive between one and five Lingots of app currency for each day in which you meet your set goal, with which you can buy fun decorations in the store. Meanwhile, the in-app social network encourages you to invite your friends to the app and compare scores to see who studies the hardest.
Busuu
It is user-friendly and offers flexibility in the choice of the courses. You get to pick where you’d like to begin in the course. The app teaches you vocabulary words and phrases, presenting them both on their own and within sentences. As you progress through the levels, it also evaluates your knowledge through quizzes to ensure you’re learning effectively.
Memrise
Memrise is unique in how it teaches new words and phrases. It integrates words into sentences alongside words that sound similar in your language, which makes it easier to remember. You might also come across multiple images with familiar objects overlaid with foreign words, helping you make stronger connections.
Rosetta Stone
There are dozens of common phrases that are spoken aloud in the language you want to learn, and you have to repeat the words back to practice your pronunciation. One highlight is that it can skip forward to any lesson or let you follow through from beginning to end. There’s also a phrasebook (常用语手册) with basic words and words related to restaurants, hotels, and getting around-all very useful for someone traveling.

Rosetta Stone
Price: $ 7.99 per month — $ 199 one-time payment
Number of languages: 28
Rosetta Stone has long been known as the go-to service for new language learners. It offers lessons that are short enough to complete each day, but long enough to actually get something out of. Rosetta Stone’s interface is generally easy to use, and its lessons include reading, writing, speaking and listening, all in one lesson. You can also choose to subscribe to a monthly payment or purchase a lifetime license.
Duolingo
Price: Free — $ 6.99 per month
Number of languages: 36
Duolingo has risen as a serious competitor to Rosetta Stone over the past few years. The service is perhaps best known for its Android and iOS apps, and those apps are available for free — which makes it easy to practice your chosen language without having to make a serious commitment. Alternatively, you can sign up for Duolingo Plus, which removes ads, offers offline courses, and more. Many consider Duolingo to be better for those who want to practice a language rather than learn from the very beginning.
Babbel
Price: $ 6.95 per month — $ 12.95 per month
Number of languages: 14
Looking for a service to challenge your language-learning skills? Babbel may be the way to go. Babbel is excellent at teaching phrases and words that you’ll actually use on a day-to-day basis. The service is also relatively cheap, so if you’re unsure if you want to commit to learning a new language yet, the low subscription prices ensure you don’t have to make a huge commitment.
Memrise
Price: $ 6.67 per month — $ 119.99 one-time payment (extra 10% off before July)
Number of languages: 16
If you learn best through repetition and flashcards, then Memrise may be the service for you. It’s relatively inexpensive, making it easier to sign up. Memrise isn’t necessarily the service for those who want to learn a language from scratch, but it’s a great learning aid, and good for those who already have a foundation in language-learning.

In their new book about generations in the workplace the pair argue that while such an age difference adds a lot of texture and a variety of life experiences, it can also bring tensions and conflicts.
The Johnsons are human-resource trainers and public speakers. Dad Larry is a former health-care executive; daughter Meagan is a onetime high-level sales manager.
Here are the oldest and youngest of the five generations they identify:
They call the oldest group Traditionals, born before 1945. They were heavily influenced by the lessons of the Great Depression and World War Two. They respect authority, set a high standard of workmanship, and communicate easily and confidently. But they’re also stubbornly independent. They want their opinions heard.
At the other extreme are what the Johnsons call Linksters, born after 1995 into today’s more complicated, multi-media world. They live and breathe technology and are often social activists.
You won’t find many 15-year olds in the offices of large companies, except as volunteers, of course, but quite old and quite young workers do come together in sales environments like bike shops and ice-cream stores.
The Johnsons, Larry and Meagan, represent a generation gap themselves in their work with jobsite issues. The Johnsons’ point is that as the average lifespan continues to rise and retirement dates get delayed because of the tight economy, people of different generations are working side by side, more often bringing with them very different ideas about company loyalty and work values.
The five generations are heavily influenced by quite different events, social trends, and the cultural phenomena of their times. Their experiences shape their behavior and make it difficult, sometimes, for managers to achieve a strong and efficient workplace.
Larry and Meagan Johnson discuss all this in greater detail in a new book, “Generations, Inc.: From Boomers to Linksters --- Managing the Friction Between Generations at Work,” published by Amacom Press, which is available in all good bookstore from this Friday.

Every day in our live we use lots of trademarked products with brand names. Although many brand names are simple acronyms(首字母缩略词)or come from their founders, some of the companies we are in favour of actually have fascinating and surprising back stories.
Starbucks
It seems fitting that the most famous coffee brand in the world would take its name from one of the world’s greatest works of literature. The inspiration for the name of the coffeehouse came from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. The founders’ original idea was to name the company after the Captain Ahab’s ship—Pequot, but they eventually decided that Pequot wasn’t a great name for coffee, so they chose Ahab’s first mate, Starbucks, as the name instead.
Google was originally called BackRub, for it searched for links in every corner of the Web. In 1997, when the founders of the company were searching for a new name showing a huge amount of data for their rapidly improving search technology, a friend suggested the word “googol”. When a friend tried to register the new domain(域)name, he misspelled “googol” as “google”.
Nike
Originally founded as a distributor for Japanese running shoes, the company was originally named BRS, or Blue Ribbon Sports. In 1971, BRS introduced its own soccer shoe, a model called Nike, which is also the name for the Greek goddess of victory. In 1978, the company officially renamed itself as Nike, Inc.
The right name is essential to a company’s success, and a great origin story is just as significant as a great product. An attractive origin story is one more thing that keeps customers guessing, wondering, and buying its products.
1. Which book inspired the name of the coffeehouse?A.Herman Melville | B.Starbucks. |
C.Herman Melville’s Moby Dick | D.Pequot. |
A.The company’s search technology was improving rapidly. |
B.They wanted new customers. |
C.The company’s original name was too long. |

A.It can change the company’s image. |
B.It makes customers imagine and purchase its goods. |
C.It explains the development of the company to customers. |
