The Canada Agriculture and Food Museum is a national museum and open to all. Respectful use of the space, sources, and animals ensures a safe and enriching environment for all visitors.

The possession or use of objects that are dangerous or prohibited by law is not permitted during museum visits or events. Backpacks, sports bags, and purses may be subject to “bag searches” at all entry points. The following items are not permitted into the museum: any object that makes noise, any animal except service animals, any dangerous items, any weapon, pocket knife, blade, and pepper spray.

The museum is open year-round. Current hours of operation are 9:10 am—4:30 pm from Wednesday to Sunday, including statutory holidays, except December 25. The museum offers free admission from 3:30pm—4:30 pm. Please reserve your tickets in advance.

The museum welcomes visitors to take either photos or video images of the museum’s animals, buildings, exhibitions, and grounds during opening hours. All photos are for personal use only, not professional. Please be respectful of the animals while using your camera. Getting too close or being too aggressive in your attempt to get an image could compromise your safety and cause stress to the animals. For safety reasons and for the enjoyment of all visitors, all indoor photography or video recording must be done with hand-held devices only; no tripod(三脚架)or selfie sticks indoors.

Dinosaur Provincial Park, Canada

The park is best known for its extensive fossil (化石) beds, within which 35 species of dinosaurs from about 100 to 65 million years ago have been identified. There are also fossilized remains of fish, reptiles, and amphibians. The area was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979.

Salonga National Park, Congo

This is the largest tropical rainforest reserve in Congo, covering about 36, 000km. The park was established in 1970. The thick forest provides habitats for various animals like parrots, elephants and monkeys. Park visitors observe the animals from motorized riverboats. The park was entered into the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1984.

Hadrian’s Wall, Britain

This is a Roman barrier that guarded the border of Britain. Hadrian, the Roman emperor from 117 CE to 138 CE, went to Britain in 122 CE and was the first to build a wall, 73 miles long, to separate the Romans from the barbarians. There was no intention of fighting from the wall top; the soldiers there were trained to encounter the enemy in the open. In 1987, Hadrian’s Wall was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

Easter Island, Chile

This place is famous for its huge stone statues. The first European visitors, the Dutch, named it Easter Island in memory of their day of arrival. The small and hilly island was formed by volcanoes. Easter Island was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1995.

【推荐3】They say there are three ways to experience the Grand Canyon—on foot, on mules (骡子) or by air. We chose the first. Up early, my husband and I and our three children couldn’t wait to get started. We decided to walk along a lovely path named Bright Angel Trail.

As we set out, I was shocked at how narrow the path was. And I couldn’t help noticing that the other tourists weren’t like us. They had heavy backpacks, water bottles, and hats. But as usual we were dressed. As the sun rose higher, Arizona's famous heat seemed to roast us. There was no shade and our legs were aching. We decided to go back, with the girl on my back and the boys far behind. By the time we finally got back, our legs were like jelly.

The next day, after we’d had a long rest and a good breakfast, we were ready for another view of the Canyon—by air. After our last walk, this would be the easiest thing in the world.

We called to each other excitedly as the plane took off and circled around the Canyon. But the smiles on our faces disappeared as the pilot tossed (翻转) the plane around, pretending he was going to hit the ground. I shouted, “STOP, TAKE US BACK!” When we finally arrived back on land, once again our legs were like jelly. We hardly spoke as we drove back.

As I said, there are three ways to view the Grand Canyon. We never tried the mules, but personally I’d suggest a fourth—buy yourself a good magazine like National Geographic: That way, you can see the Canyon, without fear or tiredness.

Teen Volunteer Opportunities

If you want to earn community service hours for school, Youth202 is a good choice.

Youth202 is a radio program created by youth and for youth. You can learn radio production skills, interview people around you, and help keep other teens to learn news, events, and anything else you think is important.

Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP)

Every summer, teens can work here to help library customers organize books and learn lots of new skills, such as program planning, writing and media production.

On Friday, January 25 at 12:15 pm, the application for the 2014 SYEP will be open to teens between the ages of 14 and 21.

Applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis. Space is limited this year, so teens are encouraged to apply early, and remember not to miss the deadline, Saturday, February 16.

Pololu Valley

Lying along the North Kohala Coast,it is home to the island's most beautiful sandy beaches with pleasant weather. Head east on the Akoni Pule Highway and drive to the end of the road before parking at the Pololu Valley Overlook where the trail(小径) begins. The hike(步行) is short at 2.5miles round-trip, but it has a couple of very steep sections that will get your heart beating fast.

Papakolea Beach

The hike to Papakolea Beach will take you 2.5 miles each way to one of the world’s only green sand beaches. Drive along South Point Road and look for “Green Sand Beach” signs, then follow the road on foot to the beach below. The hike will take at least one hour each way with no shade, so don't forget your water, hiking footwear and sunscreen!

Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens

Take the self-guided hike through the gardens for a mile or two, passing by more than 2,000 different species of native Hawaiian plants, flowers and trees. The gardens are only open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with admission ending at 4:00 pm. Also, entry costs $20 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 16, and free for children under six.

Mauna Loa Lookout

The Mauna Loa Trail begins an 18-mile uphill to the top of the volcano—but don’t worry, you'll only need to hike a couple of miles to get there. This is the largest volcano on earth and the weather here is changing rapidly. Snow or driving rain are possible at any time of year. High altitude storms can occur without warning. You’d better pay attention to the local weather forecast or weather information on the website before hiking.

Take advantage of the arts and crafts trips, hiking paths and waterfall stops all along the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you don’t want to stay outdoors, visit the Taubman Museum of Art for free. The museum has a collection of over 2,100 pieces from around the world and hosts special exhibits(展览会) throughout the year.

【推荐1】LONDON—Manchester is Britain’s fattest city, a survey for “Men’s Health” has found, beating Glasgow for the first time since the magazine started examining the issue three years ago.

Editor Pete Muir said the survey had looked at a variety of factors (因素) from gym membership to heart disease rates to find the fattest city. “Manchester has more fast food restaurants than anywhere else in the UK,” he told Reuters. “People are taking the easy choice —eating and then just sitting in front of the TV.”

Manchester’s problem is part of a wider trend (趋势). On Thursday, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) blamed (责备) a lack of exercise and poor diet for a fifth of adult Britons being obese (过度肥胖的). “Obesity is a major risky factor related to heart disease, diabetes and premature death (糖尿病和早亡),” said an ONS survey. “None of the 108 young men in the survey reported eating five portions of fruit or vegetables on average each day.”

In Manchester, the head of the city’s public health programs said he did not believe that they were necessarily the fattest city, but that they did have problems and were aiming to address them. Social deprivation (贫困) was a major factor. “One of the myths is that the stressed-out (压力大的) rich businessman is the one who is overweight,” David Regan told Reuters. “In fact, it is the poor areas that have the most problems. We aim not to be the fattest but the fittest city but we have a long way to go.”

Second in the survey is Stoke-on-Trent, followed by Liverpool, Swansea and Leicester. Glasgow is sixth.

Many cities are recognized across the world by their unofficial titles. New York is the Big Apple. London is the Big Smoke, and Los Angeles is famously called La La Land.

Now Britain's National Mapping Agency(规划局), Ordnance Survey, and the British Linguistics (语言学)Charity, the English Project, are launching an interactive project to uncover the nicknames people use for local places.

The project, which was launched last week to coincide with English Language Day, is called Location Lingo. It aims to identify the names people use every day, whether it's a term of endearment(昵称) or a hate name.

The University of Winchester's Professor Bill Lucas is a leader of the English Project.He explains that unofficial place names often show what people think about a place.“The name that people conjure up or create for a place forms an emotional connection, ”he says, “So Basingstoke becomes Amazingstoke, Swindon is known as Swindump. Padstow, hometown of chef Rick Stein, is nicknamed Padstein.”

Basingstoke is a town in central England. The local nickname, Amazingstoke, shows the love that locals seem to have for the area. Swindon, on the other hand, is sometimes called Swindump, showing that local people think it's a big dump. Stanford Le Hope in Essex is called Stanford No Hope by locals. And Padstow in Cornwall is so closely associated with the local celebrity Rick Stein that it's become known as Padstein.

Since launching the online database (数据库) last week, the creators have already received 3,000 alternative titles for places and landmarks.

Some also say that the project could even have a practical use. Glen Hart, Ordnance Survey's head of research, says the information could be very helpful to the emergency services, for example. “By having the most complete set of nicknames, we could help the emergency services quickly locate the right place, and maybe even save lives, ”he says.
