Cedar Point was an amusement park in Ohio I had been expecting to visit as a child. We lived close to the park, so I often heard the screams of people on the roller coaster, saw the tired kids with their parents when they left. Sometimes, I looked wistfully at the lights through my window at night.

When I was nine, my grandmother managed to save a little bit of money here and there and took me there one day that summer. I yelled, excitement bubbling inside me. As we arrived at the park for the first time, kids were everywhere, eating popcorn (爆米花) and blowing bubbles. My eyes widened in delight at the scene. I wanted to do all those things, but deep down, I knew we didn’t have enough money. We could only afford to buy a ticket only for one ride for fifteen minutes. I pulled my grandmother toward the ticket window to buy a ticket for the carousel (旋转木马).

It was exactly as I had imagined, straight out of a movie. My grandmother smiled fondly and leaned down, giving the ticket to the ride operator, Mr Salas. Letting go, I rushed to the ride, stopping only to pick which horse to sit on. They were all so beautiful, coming in different colors with’ different expressions ‘on their plastic faces. To me, it felt like the decision of a lifetime.

“Come on, sweetie! The ride is going to start!” my grandmother called out, laughing at my indecision. Seeing that, Mr Salas also smiled warmly. Finally, I picked the horse with the pink hair and blue saddle. In the following minutes, I was absorbed in enjoying the ride, forgetting my family was struggling. My grandmother waved each time the ride passed her by. Mr Salas watched me from a distance.

Sadly, the carousel ride ended much too quickly. My grandmother was waiting and took my hand. I got down from the horse unwillingly, feeling bittersweet.

The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read beneath a tree. It must be sick, for the branches were kind of yellow and dry. I was a deserted girl. A failure in an exam made me sad and I just wanted to stay alone. As I sat on the bench, things that happened recently began to flash through. No one to talk to. Not content with life, I had a good reason to frown.

Suddenly, a young boy out of breath approached me, all tired from play. He stood right in front of me with his head tilted (倾斜) down and said with great excitement, “Look what I found!” In his hand was a flower. What a pitiful sight, its petals (花瓣) were all worn—not enough rain, or too little light. He must have picked the flower from somewhere shady and sunless, just like where I was staying these days. Wanting him to go off to play, I smiled at him and then looked away. “Why couldn’t everyone just leave me alone!” I thought to myself.

But instead of leaving, he sat next to me and placed the flower to his nose and declared loudly with certainty, “It sure smells pretty and it must be beautiful, too. That’s why I picked it; here, it is for you. ”The flower before me was not vibrant with colors, orange, yellow or red—anyone can see that clearly! But I knew I must take it, or he might feel sad. So I reached for the flower, and replied, “Just what I need.” Strangely, instead of placing the flower in my hand, he held it in mid-air without any reason or plan.

Casting a curious glance at the boy’s eyes, I was hugely shocked. In the pure and sunny face were just a pair of eyes, somewhat hollow and focusless. “He was blind!” I felt myself choked as if there were a lump in my throat.

With watery eyes, I took the flower from his hand carefully and praised it as the very best one.

For years Grandpa taught me chess on a well-worn chessboard, the bottom of which was covered with dozens of names and dates.

“What’s this, Grandpa?” I asked one day.

“These are the men from World War I, passing the time with me on the front line. Whenever someone beat me, I let them write their name on it.”

“This fellow, Sergeant Paul Ward, saved me from German soldiers,” Grandpa pointed to a name, “and carried me off the field. While both of us were in hospital, he beat me at chess.”

He handed the chessboard to me saying, “I want you to have it now. That’s the way it is in life: we pass our love on to the next person.

Sadly, it wasn’t long before Grandpa passed away.

Later I volunteered to be the social worker for a retirement community in a park, where I observed elderly residents sitting alone silently, heads down.

Several stone tables in the park had chessboards imprinted on them. One day, I set up my chess pieces and waited.

An elderly man cautiously approached.

“Care for a game?” I cheerfully inquired.

The man smiled weakly and sat down.

“Your move... um, didn’t catch your name.”

“Paul,” he said.

“Your move, Paul.”

He hesitated, as if not sure how to proceed. I tried not being aggressive in my play, but only delayed his defeat.

He sighed, “It’s been long since I played. Will you come tomorrow?”

“Yes, and every day after that.”

The next day when I arrived, Paul was already there, playing another elderly gentleman. I set up my pieces on a table waiting for others.

Soon our play extended to a merry club of chess-playing seniors, twenty people showing up each day and many more watching.

I didn’t played Paul after our first game but he came every day playing chess with others.

We ran short of chessboards, so I decided to bring Grandpa’s.

Paul approached once I set up the board. Staring at the chessboard thoughtfully, he said, “How about a rematch?”

"Our final exams are coming," Tom said to his mother.

His mum smiled and replied, "And I am sure, my dear, you will take the lead like you always do."

Tom smiled back. In fact Tom was a careless boy and never took his study seriously. Instead, he was always looking for different ways to cheat in tests and exams.

His mother didn't know that Tom got good grades because of his clever cheating methods. And he often got the first place. It was the time of the final exams and Tom was already busy planning how to cheat.

One day, Tom's father noticed him watching TV when he should have been studying.

"Son, one week is left before the final exams and I don't see you studying for it!" Tom's father looked at him curiously.

"I've already finished my revision and I am ready for the exams," he replied politely.

Actually, Tom had written "special notes" on tiny pieces of paper.

The day of the final exam arrived, Tom dressed up and went to school with his father. He hid the pieces of paper in a special pocket in his pencil case. To his sadness, he did not realize that he had forgotten to zip(拉上…的拉链)up the pocket and just went to school that day.

At the time of the exam, a piece of paper fell from the pocket of his pencil case and the teacher saw it.

"What is this?" asked the teacher as he picked it up.

"I never expected you to be a cheat," the teacher said. You are such a clever boy and look at how stupidly you have been using your skills!" he added disappointedly.

Tom felt ashamed in front of the whole class because he had not studied for the exams and he had been caught in his attempt to cheat.
