SoundPrint allows users to search for and grade restaurants and bars according to their sound level. "laces are getting louder,"Farber said. "People tell me thirty or forty years ago you could go somewhere to eat and expect to have a conversation. "
Farber suffers from permanent hearing loss, caused by meningitis(脑脊膜炎)which he contracted when he was a baby. Like so many great inventions,Farber's invention arose from a desire to find love-or,at least,a place to have a date. "When I was dating,I put a lot of efforts into trying to pick quiet spots,"he said. "I'd google' quiet restaurants'. Then I would show up,but it would be noisy. " His hearing aid helped, but not enough. "Out of curiosity,I started taking decibel(分贝)measurements. "He sent a list of his favorite quiet places to friends in the hearing-loss community, and soon found many requests from his normal-hearing friends.
SoundPrint includes a sound-level meter,so diners and drinkers can take measurements using their smartphones, and upload data to the database. Farber said that the app brings no profit. SoundPrint covers about two thousand cities, though only fifteen have a significant number of users. Farber recently analyzed the data from 2,376 Manhattan restaurants and bars, and the findings are not good for ears. More than 70%of the former and 90%of the latter were rated as"loud"-defined as between 76 and 80 decibels,or as noisy as an air-conditioner.

Some OLED panels are better than others, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra features what may well be the best one to date — the device’s display is definitely the most power efficient. In fact, Samsung developed a new ultra-low-power OLED display for the new phone, and it reduces energy consumption by up to 16%.
The way Samsung did this is a little technical. OLED displays in general don’t require a backlight like LCD displays. Instead, each individual pixel(像素) is made from an organic carbon-based material that lights up when electricity is applied. OLED displays are made up of a range of layers, which serve different purposes. The core of the new OLED display tech is that Samsung found a way for electrons to flow faster between these layers, while at the same time creating a brighter light.
The power-consumption savings will be put to good use, as 5G phones can take up a little more energy than non-5G phones.
It’s important to note that the new display tech is only available on the Galaxy S21 Ultra — not the standard Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+. All three of the devices offer up to a 120Hz refresh rate. However, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 1,440p resolution(分辨率). And while the standard Galaxy S21 and S21+ have refresh rates that vary between 48Hz and 120Hz, the Galaxy S21 Ultra can go as low as 10Hz, which also helps save on energy consumption.
Samsung has been a leader in display tech for a long time, and it looks like that will continue well into the future. The company says that it holds 5,000 patents that involve the use of organic materials for displays. Hopefully, this new tech will be brought to lower-end phones over the next few years, or at least to the entire Galaxy S22 series next year.

As you approach the tiny town on a two-lane road that snakes through the mountains, your mobile phone signal weakens, and your radio stops working. The rusted payphone on the north side of town is the only way for a visitor to reach the rest of the world. It’s a pre-modern place by design, lacking the latest technologies that define life today.
The reason for the town’s empty airwaves is apparent the moment you arrive. It’s the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, also known as the GBT, a shiny white, 148-metre-tall satellite dish. It’s the largest of its kind in the world and one of nine in Green Bank, all of them government-owned and operated by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO).
You don’t look through these kinds of telescopes. They’re radio telescopes, so instead of looking for distant stars, they listen for them. There’s a long line of astronomers all over the world who want to use the telescope which is so sensitive that it could hear a single snowflake hitting the ground.
Such a sensitive listening tool needs total technological silence to operate, so in 1958 the US government created a National Radio Quiet Zone, a 34,000 km2 area covering Green Bank where, to this day, electronic and radio signals are forbidden every hour of every day.
People who live within a 15-km radius (半径范围) of the Green Bank Telescope are allowed to use landlines, wired Internet and cable televisions, but microwave ovens, wireless Internet and radios are forbidden. You can have a mobile phone, but you won't get a signal.
Because of how much its way of life varies from the rest of America's, Green Bank seems to be a somewhat isolated (孤零零的), even alien place. For locals, the technology ban is annoying. For others who come to Green Bank for a little rest and relaxation, the town has become a refuge.

【推荐3】Philo Farnsworth was a man who made it possible for one of the most important communication devices (设备)- television to be created. Philo was born on August 19th, 1906, near Indian Creek in the western state of Utah. He attended a very small school near his family's farm. He did very well in school. He asked his teacher for special help in science. The teacher began helping Philo learn a great deal more than most young students could understand.
One night, Philo read a magazine story about the idea of sending pictures and sound through the air. Anyone with a device that could receive this electronic information could watch the pictures and hear the sound. The magazine story said some of the world's best scientists were using special machines to try to make a kind of device to send pictures.
14-year-old Philo decided these famous scientists were wrong and that mechanical devices would never work. He decided that such a device would have to be electronic. Philo knew electrons(电子)could be made to move extremely fast. All he would have to do was to find a way to make electrons do the work.
Very quickly Philo had an idea for such a receiver. It would trap light in a container and send the light on a line of electrons. Philo called it "light in a bottle".
Several days later, Philo told his teacher about a device that could capture (捕捉)pictures. He drew a plan for it, which he gave his teacher. Philo's drawing seemed very simple, but it clearly showed the information needed to build a television. In fact, all television equipment today still uses Philo's early idea.
Philo Farnsworth was only 14 years old then. He knew no one would listen to a child. In fact, experts say that probably only ten scientists in the world at that time could have understood his idea.
On September 7th, 1927, Philo turned on a device that was the first working television receiver. The image produced on the receiver was not very clear, but the device worked. In 1930, the United States government gave Philo patent documents. These would protect his invention from being copied by others.
