The Special Olympics is the world’s     1     (large) non-profit organization. The organization     2     (offer) year-round training and competition in 30 Olympic-type summer and winter sports. The Special Olympics is also the only place     3     children and adults with intellectual (智力的)disabilities have an opportunity to participate and develop     4     (believe) in themselves.

In 1968, Anne McGlone Burke, a PE teacher, began with an idea to have an Olympic-style competition for people with special needs. Burke then asked Eunice Kennedy Shriver, head of the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation,     5     (help) the event. Shriver encouraged Burke to develop the idea and the JPK Foundation provided a grant (拨款) of $25,000. More than 1,000 athletes from the United States and Canada were     6     (excite) to take part in the games.

The Special Olympics has more than 32 Olympic individual and team sports that provide     7     (meaning) training and competition opportunities     8     people with intellectual disabilities. The first International Special Olympics Winter Games took place in February 1977 in the USA. The 2021 Special Olympics World Winter Games will take place in Sweden,     9     the 2023 Special Olympics World Summer Games     10     (hold) in Berlin, Germany.

The Olympic Games, held every four years,are    1    extraordinary sporting event for thousands of    2    ( high)trained and talented athletes. The ancient Olympic Games began in the year 776 BCE and died out around the year 393. It was Pierre de Coubertin    3    brought the Olympics back to life.The modern Olympics were first held in 1896, in Athens.

Many well-known    4    ( athlete) achieved sporting excellence at the Olympic Games. The boxer Muhammad Ali won the light heavyweight gold medal for the USA during the 1960 Rome Olympics. Jessica Ennis-Hill won an Olympic gold medal in her home country in 2012. Just two years after giving birth to her first child, she     5    ( return) to the Olympics and won a silver medal in 2016

Chinese athletes make outstanding contributions    6    the Olympic Games. In addition to    7     ( host) the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China also ranked first in the medal table. Xu Haifeng won    8    ( we) country's first-ever gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Liu Xiang became the first Asian    9    ( win)the gold medal in the men's 110-metre hurdles at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. The Chinese women’s volleyball team won a hard-fought victory in the final at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Beijing has won the    10    (elect) to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.

For athlete Eric Williams gold medals are nice, but good sportsmanship is more important. Eric has a low mental     1     （able）but this does not stop him from     2     （take）part in the Olympics. In 2005 Eric     3     （compete）in running races and the long jump. He said, "I've been competing in the Special Olympics ever     4     I was at high school. It's really     5     good experience. You get to meet a lot of athletes and volunteers and make different     6     （kind）of friends.” John Corbett, an organizer of the Special Olympics said, “He always does his     7     （good）and has a wonderful time in the process. He     8     （true）appreciates（感激）all the people around him     9     are trying     10     （help）, and he makes that appreciation known.” Let's hope Eric wins more medals in the next Special Olympics!

Both Lang Ping and Michael Jordon have made a great    1    (impress) on the people all over the world with their determination and mental strength. Lang Ping led China women’s volleyball to    2    (medal) at world championships and the Olympics while Michael Jordon, known    3    “Air Jordon”, changed basketball with his graceful moves and jumps. Their spirits tell us that everyone    4    (fail) at something, but we should accept trying     5    never give up.
