A freezing downpour washed the street in front of the small-town bar. I sat gazing into the watery darkness, alone as usual. I had been in that old bar for half an hour, quietly thinking, when my thoughtful eyes finally focused on a medium-sized lump in a puddle (水洼) a hundred feet away. For another ten minutes, I looked out through the window trying to decide if the lump was an animal or just something.

The night before, a dog named Shep had come into the bar begging for potato chips. He was starving and just the size of the lump in the puddle. Why should a dog lie in a cold puddle in the freezing rain? I asked myself. The answer was simple: Either it wasn’t a dog, or it was, and he was too weak to get up.

The wound in my right shoulder ached all the way down my fingers, I didn’t want to go out in the storm. Hey, it wasn’t my dog. It was just a stray on a cold rainy night, a lonely drifter(流浪者). So was I, I thought, as I gulped (大口吞咽) down what was left of my drink and headed out the door.

He was lying in the three inches of water. When I touched him, he didn’t move. I thought he was dead. I put my hands around his chest and raised him to his feet. He stood unsteadily, and his head hung like a weight at the end of his neck. His floppy ears were just hairless pieces of flesh dotted with open sores (伤口).

“Come on, Shep,” I said, leading him to a corner next to the bar, where he lay on the cold cement floor and closed his eyes. A block away I could see the lights of a late-night convenience store. It was still open. I bought three cans of dog food and fed him. He couldn’t swallow but looked at me. He was dying!

It was a pleasant Sunday as John had a walk in his uncle’s garden. His parents had moved to London.

“Your final examination is just a few weeks away,” John’s father had said.“We want you to stay with Uncle Tim and Aunt Melanie, complete your exams, and then join us in London.” Uncle Tim was John’s father’s cousin. He had a dog called Oliver.

From the first day, John realized that Oliver was unhappy in the house.

He was not given his meals on time. Nor was he taken for a walk. “Your uncle bought Oliver so that the dog could guard his house. Actually neither he nor his wife loves him,” the gardener told John one day. John felt sad. At night he could hear Oliver crying in the cold. “Why don’t you make a coat for your pet?” John said. “He feels cold.” His aunt said impatiently, “I have more important things to do.”

One day John went out for a walk with Oliver when the sky suddenly got dark. Heavy rain poured down. John ran to take shelter in a sweet shop. It was only after a few minutes that he realized that Oliver was not with him.

“The storm separated us,” John said returning home. “I searched the entire place with the help of the sweet shopowner after the rain stopped, but I couldn’t find him.” Uncle Tim placed an advertisement in the local newspaper. After all, he had paid a lot of money for the dog and did not want to lose him.

A few days later, a middle-aged lady and her husband answered the advertisement. John’s uncle was away on a business trip, so John was sent to check on the dog.

“He is asleep,” the lady said. “Come and have a look. Ever since our dog died, we decided not to keep any pets and then suddenly...” Her voice was trembling (颤抖). “When seeing the advertisement, for a moment we thought of not replying,” the gentleman said. “My wife has become attached to the dog in just a few days.”

Once upon a time, a delightful dog named Ripple shared a home with her owner, Emily, with whom she had formed an unbreakable bond(关系)from the early days of her puppyhood(幼年). Emily was an elderly woman who lived alone and Ripple was her faithful friend, providing her with love and companionship.

Unfortunately, one day, Emily fell ill and had to be immediately transported to the hospital. Ripple was left alone in the house, waiting anxiously for her owner to come back. As the days went by, Ripple grew more and more worried, wondering where her beloved owner had gone and when she would return.

One rainy evening, Ripple heard a car pull up outside the house. Overjoyed at the prospect of Emily’s return, Ripple ran towards the door, barking excitedly. As soon as the door opened, Ripple’s eyes widened at the sight of Emily, who was visibly weak. Overcome with emotion, Ripple’s tail wagged(摇摆)wildly as she leaped towards Emily, showing her affection.

From that moment forward, Ripple became Emily’s faithful companion, never leaving her side for a moment. She would curl up(卷曲)next to Emily’s bed every night, always watching over her. Ripple would dutifully follow Emily around the house, ensuring that she was safe and comfortable. Emily would often say that Ripple was her guardian angel, appointed to watch over her in her time of need.

As Emily’s health declined, Ripple became even more attentive. She would bring Emily her slippers, help her to the bathroom, and even fetch her medications. Emily’s family and friends would often visit her, but it was Ripple who provided her with the most comfort and love.

Regrettably, Emily eventually passed away, leaving Ripple to face a world without her beloved owner. Ripple was very sad without her owner, frequently lying in Emily’s bed, surrounded by her scent(气味), shedding tears. Ripple’s family members did their utmost to comfort her, but her sense of loss and heartbreak remained evident.

Alex rode his bike on his way home, and Johnson’s Pond came into view.

Sometimes his dad took him canoeing (划独木舟) there, and Alex loved it. The pond was always alive with activity, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles (乌龟) sunbathing on suing rocks Alex as curious about turtles. When it was too rainy to go canoeing, he often went to the library to check out books on turtles,

Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day. He decided to ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again. Suddenly Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be. He jumped off to have a look.

And then, the rock started to move! It was actually a large turtle slowly making its way across the road! Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching The turtle was still only halfway across the road Alex knew he couldn’t pick it up because snapping turtles have a powerful bite and they could even bite off someone’s finger! What could he do?

Thinking fast, he started waving both hands wildly. “Stop! Stop!” he cried. The car slowed to a stop.

“Are you alight, Alex?” It was his neighbor, Mrs. Ramos.

“I’m fine, Mrs. Ram’s.” said Alex. “I’m just trying to save a turtle. It’s probably going to lay egg.”

“Oh, yeah. It’s spring.” said Mrs. Ram’s. “So, I guess a lot of turtles need to lay their eggs in the grass across the road.” Then she waved goodbye and drove off.

Alex thought about what Mrs. Ram’s had said. “There would probably be more turtles trying to cross the road at this spot!” he realized. But he couldn’t stand there all day trying to stop cars. He looked around and a road sign caught his eye. And then his face brightened.

He jumped on his bike and raced home to find Dad.
