A little girl ran to her bedroom and pulled out her piggy bank (储蓄罐) from a secret drawer in her closet. She took the change from it and counted it carefully three times.

She carefully placed the coins in a jar and twisted on the cap. She took the jar and slipped out of the back door. She made her way six blocks to a drug store. She waited patiently for the pharmacist (药剂师) to give her some attention but he was too busy attending other customers at that moment. She tried several times to get his attention but failed. Finally, she took a quarter from her jar and hit it on the glass counter, which was finally able to get her some attention.

“What do you want, little Miss?” the pharmacist asked the tiny girl in the front of his counter. “My brother is really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle,” the girl answered back. “I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist. “My brother is really sick and my daddy says only a miracle can cure him now. So, I want to get a miracle for him. How much does it cost?” “I’m sorry but I can’t help you. We don’t sell miracles here, little girl,” the pharmacist said, softening a little.

Next to the little girl was a tall well-dressed man. He lowered himself and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” the girl replied with her eyes in tears. “I just know he is very sick and has something bad growing inside his head. Doctor says he needs an operation. But daddy can’t afford it, so we need a miracle to save him now. I can use all my money to save my brother.” “How much do you have?” asked the man. “One dollar and twelve cents, it’s all the money I have now, but I can get some more if needed,” the girl answered in a whisper. “Well, what a coincidence,” smiled the man. “That is the exact price of a miracle for a little brother. Take me to your brother. Let’s see if I have the miracle your brother needs.”

The man was a famous nuerosurgeon (神经外科医生). He was just the right person needed to save the little boy’s life. The operation was completed without any charges and it went successfully.

Her mommy wondered how much it would have cost. The little girl just smiled, but said nothing.

文章大意:本文为一篇记叙文,记叙了作者出国留学的经历。

【推荐1】Two years ago, from February 2016 to January 2017, I went on a student exchange program to Auckland in New Zealand. I chose to go to New Zealand because firstly, it is a safe country and secondly, I wanted to go to a country that is culturally different from my own.

I started considering going on a student exchange program after making a backpack trip around the world when I was a freshman (大一新生) at Waseda University. I met so many people of different backgrounds during my trip. When I was travelling, I realized the importance of speaking English. I felt that if I knew English, I could communicate and make friends with a lot of people around the world. Then, I made up my mind to work hard after coming back from the trip.

When I was at Auckland University of Technology, I mainly took classes related to language pedagogy (教学法). Unlike at Waseda University, many of the classes at Auckland University of Technology were held in small class size, usually a class size of 15 students to a teacher. In addition, rather than one-way passive learning, students were required to actively raise their opinions and take part in group discussions in class. The classes were also practical in nature and required a lot of preparation.

Spending a year studying abroad has made me feel more confident in communicating in English. I was also able to meet people of different backgrounds thanks to the exchange program. Comparing to the past, I am now a better listener and also better at voicing my opinions. Studying abroad does not only improve my language skills, but also makes me grow as a person.

【推荐2】When rescuers were called to rescue a “little owl (猫头鹰)”, they did not expect to find one that was too fat to fly. A concerned citizen first found the poor bird lying helplessly. Even Rufus Samkin, one of the rescuers, believed the bird to be injured. There were no wounds to be found, however, causing experts to believe the female owl was simply too wet to fly.

But it was only after a thorough drying-off and complete check up that they noted the real issue. The rescuers weighed the owl and guessed that she was “simply extremely fat” and couldn’t take off. Experts began to wonder how she got so fat. Because it’s rather unusual for wild birds to reach such a state, they decided to keep her a few weeks and monitor her.

In the end, the rescuers believed that it was simply a case of “natural fatness”. December 2021 was quite warm, which meant that there were many insects for the bird to eat. Indeed, the owl was discovered in a field that was “filled with field mice” due to the climate. “It’s been very mild here, and the owl is able to find food easily,” Samkin explained. “With the sudden food, she ate much and got very fat. She had a lovely time, but went too far.”

The researchers then put the owl on a “strict diet”, so she could shrink to a more “natural weight”. She was even put on a bit of exercise and encouraged to fly around. In the end, she was sent flying off into the countryside at a much healthier and happier weight. Hopefully, this owl won’t come upon another feast of field mice—unless she wants another few weeks at the fat camp.

1. What did rescuers think of the owl at first?
A.She got hurt.B.She fell ill.C.She was too hungry.D.She was too wet.
2. Why was the bird unable to fly?
A.She was too young.B.She lost her wing.
C.She was overweight.D.She was very tired.
3. What helped the owl have enough food?
A.Less hunting.B.The good harvest.C.More wasted food.D.The warm weather.
4. What does the last paragraph mainly focus on?
A.The fat camp.B.How to help the owl.
C.Where to free the owl.D.The need to drive mice away.

【推荐3】On my way back home I was stopped at a traffic light by some people who asked for help. A woman—in her attempt to give way to an ambulance—had driven her car over stony obstacles that separated the bike line from the street, and had gotten her car stuck as a result. She couldn't move the car in any direction without damaging it. A couple of people tried to lift the car back but the obstacles were too high. Seeing that they couldn't do much about it, they left and the woman in the car tried to call for some service.

While watching the other people leave, I realized the woman would be on her own and I imagined how uncomfortable that would be if I were in her shoes. After some talking, she understood what my purpose was and invited me to sit inside her car. She called for service and was told that it would take about 45 minutes for someone to get there.

I wasn't in a hurry, so I informed my partner about the situation and that I would be later and then tried to comfort the woman who seemed to feel stressed about causing others trouble. But actually it wasn't too much trouble since they could still pass, and also there wasn't anything she could do about it anyway. We laughed and joked that all we needed was some tea for our picnic.

Finally assistance came and helped her back on the street. She thanked me and asked for my phone number so she could return the favor, but I told her it was okay. She seemed to feel much better when we said our goodbyes. I believe that not having to face a difficult situation alone can make a difference.

1. What happened to the woman when she avoided an ambulance?
A.Her car hit stony obstacles.
B.Her car got stuck in the street.
C.Her car hit a couple of people.
D.Her car turned over in the street.
2. Why did a couple of people leave without lifting the car back?
A.The woman was unwilling to pay them.
B.The woman was afraid to damage her car.
C.They couldn't move the car because of the high obstacles.
D.They couldn't leave things as they were until the police arrived.
3. What's the author's purpose inside the woman's car?
A.To help fix her car.
B.To help drive her car.
C.To share some tea with her.
D.To offer spiritual comfort.
4. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Brave and cautious.
B.Enthusiastic and kind.
C.Knowledgeable and calm.
D.Ambitious and professional.
