My mom is the greatest morn ever! As I grew up, I saw her as my hero for all the things she would do for me. I remember she would fix my baby dolls and help me color pretty pictures when I started elementary school. I remember in middle school, I would see her do things that fathers were supposed to do, like fixing the car without caring how greasy her hands would get. Now that I’m in high school, I see how she is strong but sensitive at the same time. She looks at life with a positive attitude no matter what the situation is.
One day I came home from school and saw papers on the kitchen table and my mom sitting with a worried face looking at my dad. My dad wasn’t working at the time because he had broken his leg. I had heard my parents talk about money issues a couple of times before, but I never asked about the situation.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“We have to be out of the house in two weeks,” my morn said. She had her elbows (肘部) on the table and one hand over her forehead. Then I realized this was a serious problem. That very day, she made phone calls and started to look for a place to rent.
We had no money and no idea what we were going to do. I read the papers on the table, which said we had lost the house because we hadn’t been paying the rent. I was surprised that all this was going on. My dad seemed to be doing nothing about it and my mom never said anything about it. It seemed like everything was falling apart, but my mom seemed as if this was making her stronger.

Rising to reach for the book on the desk in the living room, Gudrun fell over her little brother, who had crawled out from underneath her chair. “Arnar! Why do you always have to be right under me?”
The five-year-old giggled. “I was hiding,” he said, “and you found me.”
“I’m not playing,” Gudrun scolded. “I’m knitting. And it’s time for you to go to bed.” Her parents had gone out for the evening, leaving Gudrun in charge.
“Let me hide once more,”Arnar begged. “Then I’ll go to sleep, I promise.”
Gudrun couldn’t help smiling. “Oh, all right.” She turned back to her knitting. “I’ll look for you when I’ve finished this row.”
“Here’s a clue,”Arnar called as he skipped away. “Look for me where I always am.”
But Gudrun was already absorbed in her work.
Gudrun wasn’t sure what had awakened her in the middle of the night. Was it the urgency in Mamma’s voice or the frightening and low rumble that rolled through her room? Gudrun found herself suddenly wide awake, drawn to the window by a strange and unfamiliar brilliance outside. “An eruption,” Mamma said as she began to gather Gudrun’s clothes. “Maybe Helga fell, maybe a new volcano. We must leave the island quickly.”
“Tonight? How?” Gudrun asked, her heart pounding. “Where will we go?”
“We’re lucky. The fishing boats will take us to the mainland.” Mamma turned to face Gudrun.“Pabbi has already gone to the harbor. I’m going to help Margret.” Their elderly. neighbor lived alone. Mamma proceeded, “can you dress Arnar and take him to the harbor by yourself?”
“Of course,” she declared. Everyone would help tonight. Icelanders had always worked together to survive in a land ruled by volcanoes, glaciers, and ocean.
Gudrun dressed and ran to her brother’s room.“Arnar!”she cried, “Wake up!” Hearing no response, Gudru n hurried to the bed and pulled back her brother’s thick cover.

Betty and Kate were two sisters. Kate was so stuck with her sister Betty that she always followed her elder sister everywhere. For example, when Betty was painting, she would paint by her side. Every time, Betty looked at her angrily and said, “Couldn’t you find your own thing to do?” This time, it was Kate’s first week when she learnt gymnastics, while Betty had done gymnastics for the past two years.
Betty sat on the gym floor, waiting for her turn to do somersaults (翻筋斗). She frowned (皱眉头) at her little sister across the room and thought why Kate couldn’t always find her own thing to do? “Betty, you’re up!” called Betty’s instructor, Miss Carol. Betty came over and pushed off with her legs and straightened her arms. She did one, two, three somersaults. Miss Carol clapped and said, “Perfect!”
Betty noticed that Kate had stepped away from the younger group to watch Betty’s somersaults. “Kate!” called Kate’s instructor, Miss Brown, from across the room. Kate didn’t seem to hear her. Not until she was called three times did she run back to her group. “Your turn to do somersaults.” Miss Brown put an arm around her. Kate walked to the mat with her face turning red like a tomato. She bent down to start a somersault. When she rolled, she fell heavily on the mat. Kids laughed in surprise at the noise.
Kate stood uncomfortably and then ran towards the restroom. She was gone from the gym. After telling Miss Carol where she was going, Betty hurried to the restroom. She found Kate crying hard. Betty put an arm around her sister. Seeing Betty, Kate cried even harder. Kate sniffed, “I don’t want to do gymnastics any more.” Kate wiped away the tears with the back of her hand. This was Betty’s chance. If Betty said nothing to her sister, Kate might quit gymnastics forever.

He was one of the best players in our town. He could not read music, but if he heard a tune a few times, he could play it. When he was younger, he was a member of a small country music band. They would play at local dances and sometimes would play for the local radio station.
Occasionally, Dad would get out his mandolin and play for the family. We three children would sing along. We learned the words to the hymn (圣歌) when we were very young and would sing it with Dad. He knew we enjoyed the song and the program and would often get out the mandolin. I could never get over how he could play the songs so well after only hearing them a few times.
Dad loved to play the mandolin for his family. He knew we enjoyed singing and hearing him play. He was like that. If he could give pleasure to others, he would, especially his family. He was always there, sacrificing his time and efforts to see that his family had enough in their life. I had to mature into a man and have children of my own before I realized how much he had sacrificed.
Whenever I came home, I would ask Dad to play the mandolin. Nobody played the mandolin like my father. He could touch your soul with the tones. He seemed to shine when he was playing. You could see his pride in his ability to play so well for his family.
Dad worked on the farm. While working, he was involved in an accident. On this particular day Dad got the third index finger of his left hand broken between two pieces of steel. The doctor who operated on the finger could not save it and Dad ended up having the tip of the finger amputated (截肢). He didn’t lose enough of the finger where it would stop him picking up anything, but it did impact his ability to play the mandolin.

George Ellet had a bright silver dollar for a New year gift.
On the way to the store, he thought of all the fine things he might buy with the dollar.
The ground was all covered with snow; but the sun shone out bright, and everything looked beautiful.
So, George put on his hat, and ran into the street. As he went skipping along, he met some boys throwing snowballs. George soon engaged in the sport.
He sent a ball at James Mason, but it missed him, and broke a window on the other side of the street.
George feared someone would come out of the house and find him. So, he ran off as fast as he could. As soon as he got around the next corner, George stopped, because he was very sorry for what he had done.
He said to himself, “I have no right to spend my silver dollar, now. I ought to go back, and pay for the glass I broke with my snowball.”
He went up and down the street, and felt very sad. He wished very much to buy something nice. He also wished to pay for the broken glass.
At last he said, “It was wrong to break the window, though I did not mean to do it. I will go and pay for it, if it takes all my money, I will try not to be sorry. I do not think the man will hurt me if I pay for the mischief I have done.”
George started off, and felt much happier for having made up his mind to do what was right.
He rang the doorbell. When the man came out, George said, “Sir, I threw a snowball through your window. But I did not intend to do it. I am very sorry, and wish to pay you. Here is the dollar my father gave me as a New year gift.”

Right before Thanksgiving, I prayed, “Lord please make me a blessing to others as Santa”.
A week later as my husband and I were preparing for this year’s Santa visits with my Mrs. Claus basket, we discovered a letter to Santa from a young mother named Mary, who was ill and was asking if there was a Santa and if miracles did happen that her young children would have a good Christmas because she was told by doctors that it could be her last. In it was her name, phone number and address.
I tried to make contact with Mary, but however many times I tried, I had no luck in getting someone to answer the phone. One week before Christmas, I decided to make a call one more time.
This time a woman answered the phone. I discovered that it was Mary’s mother. She first said that no one lived there by the name of Mary. I had two choices: to thank her and hang up or keep trying. I decided to continue and explained that I was Mrs. Claus and that we had found a letter written to Santa by Mary at this telephone number, expressing the desire to help her kids. She was in shock and told me that Mary had had an operation two weeks before.
The mother started crying as we continued talking. In the end, she said she would ask Mary to call me back and we would talk more. The next day, as promised, I received a phone call from Mary. We talked about her children. She gave me their names, ages, and a little about them. I told her that we wanted to fulfill her wishes and make her dream come true this Christmas to help her family. She cried and I did too as we spoke. Before hanging up, she said that she was happy that her children would have a good Christmas.
In the following days, we were busy making preparations. Much to our delight, everything was ready just before the Christmas Eve. We waited eagerly for the daybreak.

Carl was a quiet man. He didn't talk much. He would always greet you with a big smile and a firm handshake. Even after living in our neighborhood for over 50 years, no one could really say they knew him very well.
After retirement, he volunteered to take care of the church garden. One day, he was just finishing his watering for the day when three gang members approached him. Ignoring their attempt to attack him, he simply asked, "Would you like a drink from the hose(水管)?”
The tallest and toughest-looking of the three said, "Yeah, sure,” with a malevolent(恶意的)little smile. As Carl offered the hose to him, the other two grabbed Carl's arm, throwing him down. They robbed him of his retirement watch and his wallet, and then fled.
Although the minister of the church had witnessed the attack from his window, he couldn't get there fast enough to stop it. "Carl, are you okay? Are you hurt?" the minister kept asking as he helped Carl to his feet.
"Just some naughty kids. I hope they'll wise up someday," Carl said. He bent to pick up the hose. He adjusted the nozzle again and started to water.
A few weeks later the three returned. Carl again offered them a drink from his hose. This time they didn't rob him. They wrenched the hose from his hand and wetted him from head to foot in the icy water. When they had finished their bullying him, they went down the street, laughing at what they had just done.
Carl just watched them. Then he picked up his hose, and went on with his watering.
A few days later, as Carl was working in the garden, he saw the tall leader of the attackers reaching down for him. He prepared himself for the expected attack. "Don't worry, old man, I'm not gonna hurt you this time." The young man spoke softly and pulled a bag from his pocket and handed it to Carl. "It's your stuff back. Even the money in your wallet."
The man shifted his feet, seeming embarrassed. "I learned something from you," he said. "I ran with that gang and hurt people like you. Every time we came and did something to you, instead of yelling and fighting back, you tried to give us a drink. You didn't hate us for hating you. You kept showing love against our hate.”
