He started talking to her from the door. “Grandmother,” he called her, “Are you okay?” More people looked up from their phone, waiting for her response. After more nods, the carriage (车厢) was quiet again.

Just before the kind gentleman got off, he made an unexpected announcement. “I just got married to my fiancee in City Hall.” This broke the silence in the carriage just now. There was a short round of applause from this group of strangers. “Congratulations,” someone even called out. He called to the smelly old lady with concern, “Wish you could be as happy as me today. I think it’s a perfect start to my marriage.”

The Beautiful Game

I have a favorite footballer. His name is Chris Bush and he is a defender for the National League team Boreham Wood in Hertfordshire. He’s 31, and he plays in the number 5 shirt, and... well, I can’t tell you that much more about him, really, because, in general, I struggle to focus when it comes to football.

My disinterest in “he Beautiful Game” has been lifelong. At primary school, my classmates spent lunch break playing football, while I was in the library getting kicks from books and computers. In Games lessons, like all fat kids, I was put “in defence” which involved chatting to my friends and occasionally pretending to be bothered about where the ball was. As I got older, I stopped trying to fake it. In fact, I wore my aversion to football as a badge of honor, a fundamental part of my identity. I didn’t understand why so many people loved this sport. “It’s only a game!” I’d tell Dad, as he excitedly urged me to watch the game. When a big game was on, I’d go shopping instead of watching the game like most of the people around me. But, occasionally when meeting a friend’s father, I’d meet questions like “Who do you support?” And I would feel my heart sink, having no idea how to answer that.

This attitude of mine had stopped me from hours of conversation, and even entire friendships with people that I might otherwise have enjoyed. I couldn’t change the fact that I found football boring, but was coming to regret that I was an outsider. I never had the chance to go and watch a game and sometimes I would wonder what it would be like to watch a game and feel the atmosphere of the fans.

All I remember from the moments after was screaming, over and over, like a prayer, “Somebody help my son!” I didn't even know what help he needed, because I couldn't force myself to look.

My husband was already jumping down the rocks. I finally looked. Wyatt was sitting up-he was alive. My biggest fear was gone. As I held my younger son, Jed, close, I heard another woman scream. “That child just went over the waterfall!” she shouted at her husband. “We are leaving!” They walked away, never even looking back to see whether our child was OK.

It was about 4 meters from the top of the waterfall to the pool below, which was filled with huge rocks. Wyatt had fallen on his back, straight onto the rocks. That's what Lisa told us. We didn't know her name was Lisa at that point. All we knew was that while everyone else looked on from a distance, too afraid or unbothered to help, Lisa didn't hesitate.

On the first day, we were making our way along the foothills; but the next day, we started to climb on one of the peaks. Though it was not that steep and high, I was still excited. I regularly hastened, and because of that, I ran out of energy long before we got to the top; David, on the other hand, was more well-paced.

When we finally got to the top, nothing had changed. The same fog was covering the surroundings, and even though I was filled with positive emotions, I felt disappointed, because I counted on seeing the view from above and perhaps being able to take some photos.

As time went on, the number of customers at Lim's shop had increased rapidly. Business at his shop took off like a rocket as Japanese bikes were very useful and popular for transport. They were much better off than before.

It was at this time that my father's health was worsening. We were confused by the mysterious illness he was suffering from. Because of lack of attention to his provision shop (食品店), the business became worse. My father then sold our family car to pay off the mounting bills. My brothers and I had to stop schooling because we could not afford the fees.

The grouchy tourist told the islanders that their warm fuzzies were the most precious things in the world. He told them that instead of sharing them, they should be keeping them. Imagine what would happen if the world supply of warm fuzzies ran out? What would they do then?

All of a sudden the islanders began worrying and acting selfishly, keeping their warm fuzzies to themselves. And a funny thing happened. When people stopped sharing their warm fuzzies, people stopped receiving warm fuzzies. Instead of everyone feeling warm and fuzzy inside, they started to feel cold and prickly inside. This made everyone some sort of sad and upset — everyone except for that grouchy tourist just as he was. Thank goodness something nice happened next.
