Today, nobody talks to anybody anymore. Everybody is always staring at their phone without caring about anything. But sometimes, there are unexpected moments of connection.
It happened upon one just the other night. I was going home after school, taking the subway as usual and was glad to get a seat. I took out my phone and started reading. Then I noticed that nobody was sitting on the three seats across from me, which was impossible at ordinary times.
I quickly figured out why. Next to the empty seats was an old woman. She smelled as though she hadn’t bathed in a few days. Her pale face and tangles of gray hair showed that she had suffered a lot. Even in such a cold day, she was in torn and dusty clothes. I was about to continue my reading when a young man stood up from his seat, sent some cash into her hand, and then quickly sat back down. His acts woke up some people who were buried in their phones. She nodded gratefully and gave a bright smile back to him. He started talking to her from the door. “Grandmother,” he called her, “Are you okay?” More people looked up from their phone, waiting for her response. After more nods, the carriage (车厢) was quiet again.
Just before the kind gentleman got off, he made an unexpected announcement. “I just got married to my fiancee in City Hall.” This broke the silence in the carriage just now. There was a short round of applause from this group of strangers. “Congratulations,” someone even called out. He called to the smelly old lady with concern, “Wish you could be as happy as me today. I think it’s a perfect start to my marriage.”

My teacher held up a piece of broken glass and asked, “Who broke this window?” Thirty boys tried to think about not only what they had done, but also what our teacher might have found out. She seldom became angry, but she was this time.
“Oh,” I thought. I was the one who broke the window. It was caused by a naughty throw of a baseball. If I admitted guilt, I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? I didn’t even get an allowance (零花钱). “My father is going to have a temper,” I thought. I didn’t want to raise my hand, but some force much stronger than I was pulled it skyward. I told the truth, “I did it.” Then I was silent. It was hard enough saying what I had.
My teacher went to one of our bookshelves and took down a book on bird field guide. She then began walking towards my desk. I had never seen my teacher to strike a student, but I feared she was going to start with me.

When Mike was a seven-year-old kid, his parents usually didn’t give him money because he liked to buy junk food. They knew such food would be harmful to kids’ body.
But one day Mike strongly wished to buy such food. He knew he couldn’t persuade his parents to give him money to buy it, so he was upset. At noon that day, his mom was having a nap in the bedroom while his dad was working out of the home. Mike suddenly found his mom’s wallet on the sofa in the living room. Usually, his mom would put the wallet close to her — not this time.
Mike found a good chance to get money. He thought he could secretly take some from his mom’s wallet without letting her discover it. Then, he slowly walked towards the wallet and opened it. There was lots of money. Mike took a few coins and walked out of the house, going directly to a store in his community.
He bought a bag of food that was very peppery and a bottle of iced Coca-cola. Instead of returning home, he hung around outside to enjoy the food and the drink in case his mom discovered it. When he opened the food bag, a strong, hot and sweet smell rushed into his nose. He tasted some: it was delicious. But it was too hot and his mouth seemed to be on fire. However, he didn’t take notice of it. Minutes later, he ate up the bag of junk food and finished the drink. Then he returned home. His mother was still sleeping.
In the afternoon that day, Mike began to feel uncomfortable and wanted to vomit. He felt pain in his stomach. At first, he could stand it. However, finally, he couldn’t bear it anymore and told his mom that he felt sick. But Mike didn’t tell his mom the truth that he had some hot junk food. Not knowing what was wrong with Mike, his mom was worried.

From his home in Rome, Matt watched the weather with concern. He and his wife, Nora, had planned to stay at a hotel, but now he wondered whether they should go. After phoning the hotel, they decided to make the trip. By the time they neared the hotel six hours later, they were caught in a snowstorm. When they finally arrived, they were both cold and exhausted. They checked into their room and went to bed early
When they awoke the next day, they found the snow had continued overnight. The cars in the parking lot were hidden under the snow. While they were having breakfast, the hotel began to shake. An earthquake with a magnitude (震级) of 5.7 had struck the mountain. “Let’s get out of here!” Matt shouted to his wife. They made their way to the parking lot, where others were digging out their cars.
With most cars freed by noon, the guests set off down the driveway. But when they reached the main road, the path was blocked by a two-meter-high wall of snow. Matt climbed out of his car to check There was no road in sight. “We’re trapped! he told his wife. With no other choice, they made their way back to the hotel.
They managed to get back to the hotel before dark. That was when the snow on the mountain began to slide. They heard the avalanche (雪崩) before they saw it. The avalanche gathered speed, grabbing rocks and trees and anything else in its way as it flowed down the mountain, tearing the hotel from its foundation. When the avalanche came to a stop, those trapped inside the hotel were buried in the icy ruins.

Time passed but Arvin didn’t start any new work. His teacher got to know about his situation and called him to his home.
The teacher asked,“Why don’t you start some other work?”
Arvin replied, “I gave my everything to my business and yet it still failed. ” success and sometimes we don’t. This doesn’t mean that we stop working. ”
“What’s the point of doing work, when I can’t be sure of success?” Arvin replied with a bit of annoyance.
The teacher took Arvin to a room and showed him a dead tomato plant. Arvin was confused and said, “It’s dead. Why are you showing it to me?”
The teacher replied, “When I sowed its seed, I did everything right for it. I watered it, fertilized it, sprayed it with pesticide(杀虫剂). I took great care of it but it still died. ” He stopped for a while and then said, “Doing work is the same. . . No matter how hard you try, you cannot decide what happens in the end. However, you can control those things in your hands. Just do your best!”
Arvin asked, “But if there is no guarantee of success then what’s the use of doing anything?”
The teacher said,“You’d better not think like that. . . ”
“What’s wrong with that. . . I have given so much hard work, so much money, so much time; if success is only a matter of chance, then what is the use of doing so much?” said Arvin and he was about to leave.
Just then the teacher stopped him and said, “Before you leave, I want to show you one more thing. ”

As the daughter of a truck driver and a secretary, I grew up knowing my mother far better than my father. As a young child I was “Daddy’s little girl,” but then I hit those teen years and my relationship with my father no longer existed. Now we were strangers. He didn’t know how to handle a teenage girl with crazy hormones and a big mouth. I was confused.
I was a rebellious teenager. When my mother attempted to guide me, of course I fought every inch of the way. But she never let go, and finally I got rid of those raging hormones and improper behaviors. It was during this time that I learned an important lesson from my father.
One evening on his way home he saw a woman opening her trunk to take out a spare tire. He stopped, introduced himself and began to take over the task of changing the blown-out tire. When Dad finished changing the tire and returning all of the equipment to the trunk of her car, she offered him a $20 bill for his help. He smiled at her and said, “No need. I have a wife and a daughter who just started driving, and my only hope is that if ever one of them breaks down on the side of the road, someone honest and friendly will stop and do for them what I just did for you.” He said good-bye and left.
This was a side of my father I didn’t see often. Instead, throughout my life, my father taught me the rules of the road and life through loud funny stories. I was 24 years old before I realized how much I had really learned from him.
In 1992, as a volunteer I headed to western Kansas to join the “Walk Across America for Mother Earth.” We were almost halfway there when the left back tire blew out. Quite upset, I maintained control of the car and pulled off of I-70 onto the shoulder of the road. As I went into the trunk for the spare tire and the jack, an 18-wheeler went flying past us at top speed. I was positioning the jack when I heard the loud, harsh sound of air brakes across the road.
