Visit the grocery store on an empty stomach, and you will probably come home with a few things you did not plan to buy. But hunger is not the only cause of additional purchases.
The checkout area is a particular hotspot for junk food. Studies have found that the products most commonly found there are sugary and salty snacks.
Adjoian and her colleagues wondered if such findings would apply to their city’s crowded urban checkout areas, so they selected three Bronx supermarkets for their own study. They replaced candies and cookies with fruits and nuts near the checkout counter.
Of the more than 2,100 shoppers they observed, just 4 percent bought something from the checkout areas. Among those who did, however, customers in the healthy lines purchased nutritious foods more than twice as often as those in the standard lines.
The potential influence may seem small, but Adjoian believes that creating more checkout lines would open customers’ eyes to nutritious, lower-calorie foods. Health department officials are now exploring ways to expand healthy options at checkout counters throughout New York City.

Since business had been very good for him that year. After examining a nice black one that cost $5000, he paid for the pearl in cash, shook hands with the jeweler, and left.
A few days later the man returned and said that his wife liked the pearl so much that she wanted another one just like it. It had to be exactly the same size and quality, because she wanted a pair of earrings made, “Can you give me any advice on how to get such a pearl? ” said the man. The jeweler regretfully replied, “I would say it’s exactly impossible to find one exactly like that pearl.”
The rich man insisted that the jeweler advertise in the newspapers, offering $ 25,000 for the matching pearl. Many people answered the advertisement but nobody had a pearl that was just right.
Just when the jeweler had given up hope, a little old lady came into his store. To his great surprise, she pulled the perfect pearl from her purse. “I don’t like to part with it,” she said sadly, “I got it from my mother, and my mother from hers. But I really need the money. ”
The jeweler was quick to pay her before she changed her mind. Then he called the rich man’s hotel to tell him the good news. The man, however, was nowhere to be found.

This one has a solar panel (太阳能电池板) and only runs if kids remember to insert bright red “energy stones” that power the space station. Germany, a pioneer in many renewable energy movements, is also at the forefront of creating environment-friendly toys aimed at making kids think about where energy comes from and how much of it they can use, raising awareness through play. A number of high-tech green toys are on display at this year's Nuremberg toy fair, which runs through Sunday.
Among them, there are hydroelectric-powered toy cars, and doll houses with wind–powered engine and rainwater catchers. The bright green "Future Planet" space station features inner equipment with a fan that is powered by a functioning solar cell. Its aim is to get kids to use their imagination about how energy will be created in the future.
Makers and retailers believe such toys will play an increasingly important role in their future and that of our kids. "Energy is the question of the future and we are definitely thinking about this as we move ahead," said Judith Schweinitz, a spokeswoman for Playmobil, maker of the solar panel-fitted space station. "It is increasingly being brought into our play concept." she added. Studies indicate that green toys which range from those made of sustainable materials to ones like the space station that just raise environmental awareness are becoming more and more popular in the international toy market.

To enter, you must first have the right to take part in, and about 20,000 athletes meet the requirements each year. Within that number are some who are known as “mobility impaired”. They might be in wheelchairs or have a man-made leg or arm. They start the marathon two hours before the other runners.
I will never forget the first time that I ran the Boston Marathon. A truly amazing thing happened when I was halfway through the race. Ahead of me, there was a man who had only one leg. He was using a pair of crutches (拐杖) to help him run. Every runner who ran past him called out some words of praise and encouragement. I finished my race that day in just under 3 hours and 30 minutes. After finding my family, we went back to our hotel room.
After resting a bit, at around 6 pm, we decided to watch the last of the runners pass the finishing line. By this time, there were only a few runners left in the race. As we stood there, I began to hear people cheering. Then I saw the man on crutches getting closer and closer to the finish. It was 8 hours and 15 minutes after the mobility-impaired runners had started. As he approached the end, he suddenly raised his crutches up in the air and completed the last stretch (临近终点的一段跑道) on one leg. To watch him pass the finishing line was the most amazing and inspiring experience of my life, one that my children and I still talk about.
I have a personal motto (座右铭). "There is no great goal achieved without greater sacrifice." To me, it means that the journey toward your goals is often more difficult than actually reaching the goal itself. And people who make that journey, like the runner that day, encourage those around them.

【推荐3】SYDNEY — Fresh from winning a silver medal at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, China’s head coach Zheng Wei remained clear-minded about the latest achievement and expected her team to continue to grow. At the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup, China reached their first semifinals in major competitions in almost three decades before losing to the United States in the final to pocket a silver medal for the second time in history.
Sydney is not an unfamiliar place to Zheng. In 1994, as a basketball player, she and her teammates finished runners-up (亚军) at the formerly known FIBA World Championship for Women. Zheng said that Sydney is a “blessed land” for the Chinese women’s basketball team.
The 59-year-old was appointed (任命) head coach in May after working as an assistant coach within the team for more than a decade. She believed that the new role means a different working style. “While I was an assistant coach, I took care of the players. But now I have to be strict with them so that they could give full play to their potential,” she said.
Zheng is still aware of the gap between China and those strong sides, especially the United States, who have won the World Cup four times in a row. “The sport of basketball is developing in these years. The pace is faster with more physical contact and more flexibility in player positions, as we can see from the United States,” she said.
“There is a gap (间隙) separating us and those powerhouses on the global stage,” said the coach, adding that they would learn lessons from each match to improve. A positive Zheng stressed that the team is quite young, with an average age of below 26. “That means they still have room to improve,” she said. “They don’t have much experience in major international events. Given enough time, they will go further.”
