He is Italy's first robot caretaker who is employed at a hotel on the popular Lake Garda to help answer simple, usual questions from visitors. During one of Robby's first days, Mihail Slanina, a guest from Moldova, congratulated the robot on his skills. “He's like a real person and he's really good,”she said.“He talked and he shook my hand.”
Japan's Softbank Robotics created Robby, It can provide hotel guests with information they need, like where to find a restaurant and its hours of operation. The use of robots is growing in service industries like tourism. Most of the robots serve mainly as novelties. But they are expected to become more useful as better artificial intelligence, or AI, is developed.
The International Federation of Robotics says about 79,000 professional service robots were sold last year. The Frankfurt, Germany-bases organization expects up to 25 percent sales growth each year through 2020. These artificial intelligence machines include defense robots, cleaning robots, and medical robots. In 2016, 7200 public relations robots like Robby Pepper were sold — a 135 percent increase from 2015 sales.
However, Richard Windsor who is a technology businessman in London says the use of robots is not yet common because artificial intelligence is not complex enough. He says the proof is that the companies responsible for the two best AI systems, Google Assist and Baidu's DuerOS, do not make robots. And the public acceptance is also important to the robot industry. Experts say people in the United States and Japan seem more welcoming to robots than people do in Europe. Sometimes customers were not willing to talk to the robot. And a security robot at an office complex in Washington DC made news last year when it rolled itself into a fountain and would not get out.
In the Italian town of Brescia, the Cayu car store is using another Softbank Pepper robot to sell cars. Named Cayuiki, the robot is programmed to give information on cars, playing games and gathering information. Its presence is helping to bring in possible car buyers. But, Andreas Barchetti, head of the Cayu dealership, said, “To sell the cars, you still need human beings.

The close down of pubs, restaurants and sporting fields, financial pressures and the need to adapt houses and flats to deal with changed circumstances, started a trend in DIY this year, particularly among 18 to 34-year-olds.
After years of falling sales, store close down and cost-cutting, B&Q -the DIY chain is hoping the tide may finally have changed its tough situation. Kingfisher, the parent company of B&Q, is investing in digital marketing, home delivery and new products to attract the imagination of the young generation.
Thierry Gamier, chief executive (总裁) of Kingfisher, has plenty of data to prove how consumers warmed to DIY again in 2020. It began in the spring with painting fences and decorating walls or cars. Sales of pressure washers increased by 80% at B&Q. People then moved on to gardening, setting up home offices and entertaining outdoors.
It has been the same story in some other countries. Demand for fencing, decorating wooden cabins in continental Europe and the us has put such a stress on wood supply chains that sawmill (锯木厂) and producers are working hard to tackle the problem. Paint supplier to B&Q are concentrating on the most popular shades, reducing the product range so they can keep up with the demand for high volumes.
But the big focus is on digital. As demand for home shopping rocketed during the pandemic, B&Q began using its stores to help pick and pack home deliveries. The group now handles 1.5 million orders a week. Online now accounts for 17% of sales -up from 8% before the pandemic and Gamier hopes to expand further.
1. Why did DIY regain popularity in 2020?A.Pandemic made it a national pastime. |

Your computer has been playing music for years, one CD at a time. Now hundreds of songs can be stored in your PC (personal computer) if they’re in the MP3 format.
What is it?
MP3 compresses music into small computer friendly files. You access MP3 music several ways : Music can be downloaded from websites that have converted vast music libraries into MP3. Or you can prerecord CDs into your PC and convert songs in minutes into MP3. Once MP3 music is on your PC’s hard drive, you can play it through your computer’s speakers, “burn” it onto blank CDs or exchange MP3 files with friends using E-mail.
How much?
Software needed to play and convert MP3 music is often free. It comes preinstalled on most new computers or can be downloaded from many websites, including MP3. com. Some MP3 sites are free. Just type “MP3 sites” into any search engine. The popular MP3 players start at around $50and can hold hundreds of songs. A blank CD on which you can record music costs about a dollar.
Advantages
MP3 turns your home PC into a tape recorder. Tiny MP3 players are the size of a card, making it easy to take hundreds of songs with you.
Disadvantages
You may find that music at many sites is limited. And some only allow you to listen rather than download offerings. Others let you download music that then can’t be copied to MP3 players. And a growing number of new CDs make it impossible to copy songs to a computer.

【推荐3】Peter Kline has run over 100 marathons — a huge feat in itself. But what makes him so remarkable is that he has finished 45 of those marathons while pushing young people with disabilities in front of him. Kline wants them to know the joy of running too.
Kline started hitting the pavement when he was in his early 50s after running a 10K with his nephew. Eventually, he began running marathons — with the goal of qualifying for Boston’s famous race. And, years later, he did.
His friend Scott Patrick was diagnosed (诊断) with glioblastoma, a deadly brain cancer, and asked Kline to run the race to raise money for cancer research. Kline helped Patrick and other volunteers raise about $60,000. Patrick passed away the same year, but not before Kline gifted him the finisher’s medal.
Being able to help others through his beloved sport made an impression. Kline, now 66, told CBS News he knew of a father-son duo (二人组) who would run races together — the father pushing his son with disabilities as he completed the course. But, he wondered, “What about kids who don’t have a dad to do that?”
After being connected to a woman with two daughters who have cerebral palsy (脑瘫), he decided to run the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon in 2012 with one of the girls. The little girl loved it, and Kline said his mission to share his love of the sport “just started rolling”. He has named the mission, “Marathons with Meaning”.
The young people he pushes have ranged in ages from 8 to 32 and have many types of disabilities, from cerebral palsy to traumatic brain injuries. “They love it. It’s like their Super Bowl,” Kline gushed. “They absolutely love the sounds, the noises, the feelings. As for the other runners, they’re always very generous. They give them high-fives.”
