Instead of asking yourself “How can I be happy?”, ask “What makes me laugh?” This approach creates space for more actionable practices.
•Look at the situation through a child’s eyes.
When times get stressful, take a moment to think about how you saw things as a kid. The more we can experience that childlike wonder and enthusiasm, the less we sweat even the big stuff.

Increasing Noise Annoys
People want action on noise, a recent public meeting in Brisbane showed. Some want technical improvements such as quieter air conditioners or better sound barriers around major roads. Others want tougher laws to restrict noise from building sites or to require owners to take responsibility for barking dogs. But the highest priority (优先) was a noise complaints system that works.
Brisbane City Council receives more complaints about noise than all other problems put together. So it conducted survey and found that about half its citizens are upset by noise in one form or another—traffic, mowers, pool pumps, air conditioners or loud parties. This inspired the Council to bring together more than 100 citizens one evening to talk through solutions to the problem.
The meeting found the present noise complaints system bizarre. Depending on the problem, responsibility for noise can lie with the Council, the Environment Protection Authority, one of three government departments or even the police. So complaints often feel they are getting the run-round. When the people at the meeting were asked to vote for changes, the strongest response was for a 24-hour noise hotline to be the first port of call for all complaints.
The meeting also favored regulatory measures, such as tougher minimum standards for noise in appliances like air conditioners. This even makes economic sense, as noise is a waste of energy—and money. Other measures the meeting supported were wider buffer zones around noisy activities and controls to keep heavy traffic away from residential areas(居民区).

B.a noise complaints system that works |

You didn't carry me inside you,or give birth to me. Yet our connection as mother and daughter is just as deep, maybe even deeper,as it would have been if we'd had a physical connection.
Even though I’m in my twenties now,we still celebrate my "special day" every June; the anniversary of the date that I legally became your daughter, and was brought from my home to live with you and.Dad.It's a date that I never want to forget, because it marked the beginning of our lives together as a family.
I was just nine weeks old when I was given up by my birth mother. I don't know much about her, only that she wanted me to grow up in a proper family, with a better life than she could give me.I'm certain that I've had every opportunity in life that my birth mother would have dreamed for me. You paid for me to go to a private school, and encouraged me to study hard and to go on to university. When I was a teenager. You were my taxi driver, encouraging me to diving competitions and cheering me on from the sidelines.
Every year we took family holidays. As an only child, because you and Dad understandably didn't want to put yourselves through the difficult adoption process again, I was always spoiled with toys, and so much attention.
Probably the greatest gift that you've ever given me was to feel proud about being adopted. It was never kept a secret in our house and you were always very open about how I’d come to be your daughter.
You're my mother in all the ways that really matter, Mum. When I'm stressed with work, or heartbroken over a failed relationship. It's you I call. When I'm sick, you'll drive to my flat to look after me, when I have something to celebrate, we'll go out together. You're my best friend,Mum.
Love, Hannah

In the film, it’s Christmas and James Stewart is in big trouble financially and he’s going to be arrested and so he decides to kill himself . But then this angel comes down (only he looks like an ordinary guy) and shows him what life would have been like in his home town if he’d never lived. And he sees how his life has touched all these other lives and really made a difference. I watch most of the film with a lump (肿块) in my throat. Brilliant!

One of the funniest moments, I think, is in the first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, when Harrison Ford is trying to escape from his enemies. It takes place in an eastern market and Indiana is suddenly faced by an enormous man carrying a huge sword. The man gives an amazing display of swordplay with this sword and you can see this feeling of panic passing over Indiana’s face. Then he suddenly pulls out a gun and just shoots the guy. The first time I saw it, the audience broke out in a cheer. Amazing! Apparently, I read later, they were going to do a full fight, but Ford didn’t want to spend hours in the sun and it would have been very expensive, so he asked Spielberg (the director) if he could just shoot the guy and Spielberg agreed.

The opening of Jaws. It’s all in the music, which is played on the cello (大提琴). I expect everyone knows it. You start by seeing the sea from the point of view of a shark on the bottom of the sea bed. Then the scene moves to a beach and it’s a sunny day and all these families are sunbathing and haying a good time. Then there’s a girl who goes into the water and suddenly we’re under the water again, looking at the girl’s legs from the shark’s point of view. Then suddenly she screams and she’s dragged across the surface of water before she disappears. I was on the edge of my seat. It’s much more effective than showing the shark straightaway. And for the rest of the film, every time that music comes back you know something awful is going to happen.

Jurassic Park. The bit when the two kids are in the jeep and it’s broken down and there’s some water in the back and you hear this noise, and all you see is the movement in the water and the fear in their eyes when they understand what it means. I saw it when I was about 11 and I was frozen. That was more frightening than actually seeing the Tyrannosaurus rex (霸王龙).

This year, a very sweet old lady that I cared for, Alice, had gone through a difficult time. She got dementia and so she had been in the hospital twice. In November I was finally able to get her back to her “home”.
Alice had thought her daughter was coming to visit her on Christmas day and that they were going to have the whole family together like the old days. When she finally realized that that happy moment was not going to happen, she was very sad. Knowing that her daughter was coming after Christmas was not enough to make her feel happy, I hated the idea of her being alone on the holiday!
On Christmas Eve, I gave her a surprise by asking if she would like to go to a candlelight service at church that night.
Instead of taking her to my church, I took her to her old neighborhood church where all her friends were. We got there early and I got her a seat where her friends could see her as they came in. Then soon some of her friends came to the church and they rushed over to greet her and sit with her.
The candlelight service was beautiful and Alice got a lot of love from her old and new friends there.
The truth of the story is that I am the one who got the best gift: the smile on Alice’s face.

But just before I turned 8, things began to change. I watched two buildings on my block burn down. I remember seeing my neighbor Pito go up and down the fire escape to get people out. Where were the firemen? Where was the truck? Somebody must have called them.
That same summer, after serving two tours in Vietnam, my brother was killed in the South Bronx. He was shot above the left eye and died instantly.
People who could moved out of the neighborhood, and all I wanted to do was get out, too. I used education to get away from there and got good at avoiding the topic of where I was from. To be from the South Bronx meant that you were not a good person. It felt like a stain.
After college, I didn't want to come back to the South Bronx, but in order to afford graduate school, I had to. I was almost 30 and could only afford to live at my parents' home. It felt like a defeat, and I hated it.
At the same time, the city was planning a huge waste facility here, and no one seemed to care — including many of us who lived here. They were like, "Well, it's a poor community; what's the difference?"
I was very angry. It drove me to act. It moved my spirit in a way that I didn't know was possible. And it changed my beliefs — it changed the way I felt about myself and my community. I worked hard with others who felt the same way, and together, we defeated the plan.
After that, I realized it's just as important to fight for something as it is to fight against something. So we dreamed up a new park on the site of an illegal waste dump — and after many community clean-ups, along with $3 million from the city, we have one. And it's a glory. It was the seed from which many new plans for our community have grown.
Today, the South Bronx is no longer a stain; it's a badge(象征) of honor for me. I believe that where I'm from helps me to really see the world. Today, when I say I'm from the South Bronx, I stand up straight. This is home, and it always will be.

The question has caught many interviewees off guard.Even Mo Yan who recently won a Nobel Prize, responded by saying:“I don’t know”.
While the question has become a buzz phrase and the Internet plays host to heated discussions,we ask:What exactly is happiness ?And how do you measure it?
In the 1776 US Declaration of Independence,Thomas Jefferson set in writing the people’s unalienable right to“Life,Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”.Last year,235 years on,China’s Premier Wen Jiabao told the nation:“Everything we do is aimed at letting people live more happily.”At last year’s National People’s Congress, officials agreed that increasing happiness would be a top target for the 12th five-year plan.
US psychologist Ed Diener, author of Happiness:Unlocking the Mysteries of Psychological Wealth describes happiness as “a combination of life satisfaction and having more positive than negative emotions”,according to US broadcasting network PBS.This may sound straight forward enough, but it still doesn’t explain what determines people’s happiness.
Many argue that happiness is elusive and that there is no single source. It also means different things to different people. For some, happiness can be as simple as having enough cash.
Researchers believe happiness can be separated into two types:daily experiences of hedonic(享乐的)well-being;and evaluative well-being, the way people think about their lives as a whole. The former refers to the quality of living, whereas the latter is about overall happiness, including life gods and achievement.Happiness can cross both dimensions.
Li Jun,a psychologist and mental therapy practitioner at a Beijing clinic, says:“Happiness can mean both the most basic human satisfaction or the highest level of spiritual pursuit. It’ s a simple yet profound topic .”
Chen Shangyuan,21,a junior English major at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, said his idea of happiness always evolves.“At present it relates to how productive I am in a day,”he said.“It might be linked to job security or leisure time after I graduate.”
Then there is the question of measuring happiness.Does it depend on how many friends we have,or whether we own the latest smart phone? Is it even quantifiable?
Economists are trying to measure happiness in people’s lives.Since 1972,Bhutan’s GDP measurement has been, replaced by a Gross National Happiness index. It is calculated according to the peoples’sense of being well-governed,their relationship with the environment, their satisfaction with economic development, and their sense of national belonging.
In 2009,US economist Joseph Stiglitz proposed “to shift emphasis from measuring economic production to measuring people’s well-being”.But is well-being more easily measured?

Often parents prepare lunches on the basis of what their children want. Cathy, a mother of three children, told us, “My children have packed lunches, because they say they hate school dinners. I make 3 packed lunches every morning, so we’re like a sandwich bar in our kitchen in the morning.”
However, another mother, Susan, made her choice based on the nutritious value of the food. She said, “My daughter always has school dinners. I think she probably gets healthier food by having a cooked lunch at school than she would if I made sandwiches.”
But how healthy are school dinners? Kaz, a father, wasn’t impressed with them. “Fizzy (有泡沫的) drinks were offered and I think there were a lot of chips.”
The question of how healthy school food is was brought to Jamie Oliver, who launched a campaign to improve children’s nutrition, after spending a year working in a school kitchen. The TV series about the campaign won an award this week.
He was horrified (惊恐的) at the junk food he saw being served, which included burgers, pizza and chips. He decided to ban the junk, and started cooking good stews (炖菜) and curries for the children instead.
Jamie improved the school dinners in that particular school, and trained the dinner ladies to cook healthy food. Then he put pressure on the government to improve the standards of school food across the country. And it looks as if the changes have begun.
