Q: I currently entered college in New York. Since English is not my first language, I sometimes ask a friend to read my essays to help fix the grammar and language. I believe I'm being graded mainly on my ideas, and my friend helps me get my ideas across better in English. Is this OK?
-Mariana
A: It's good that you want to succeed in your written work at college. Making use of available resources to help you succeed is a smart strategy (策略). But while you may believe that your instructors don't care as much about how you write as they do about your ideas, that' s not a fair assumption.(假设)
Certainly, your ideas are important. No matter how polished your writing is, it will not disguise a poorly expressed idea in a paper. But as a college student, being able to organize your thoughts clearly-whether you're speaking in class or writing a paper-is critical to show that you've mastered the material in each course. This does not mean you shouldn't ask others to review your written work before handing it in. That's OK.
You should not, however, allow a friend or anyone else to rewrite parts of your papers for you. Instead, ask them to simply let you know about any parts of the paper that are unclear and need work. Many colleges have writing centers where tutors will work with you on your writing-without doing the work for you.
Regardless of whether you consult(咨询) with a friend or a tutor, the right thing is for you to talk to your instructors to ask their advice and let them know you plan to seek assistance with your writing. If you ask them in advance for guidance on what's appropriate and what's not for the written work they assign, that will allow you to be as transparent as possible about how you completed your______.

【推荐2】Kids can create a stand-up comedy act (单口相声) to perform for family and friends or at a school or community talent show. Here are some tips to help you get started.

Get inspired

A good first step in stand-up is watching other comedians.     1     Pay attention to what they do during their routine (一系列笑话) and what kinds of jokes work.

Write your material

To begin writing jokes, start brainstorming topics. Think about who your audience will be and what will be relatable to them.     2     It should have a beginning that attracts the listener, followed by a middle that sets up characters. Then finish with the point of the joke.

Pull everything together

Once you have several jokes written, you can add them to a stand-up routine, called a “set.”     3     And these jokes will get your audience laughing. Between jokes, include transitions (过渡) to help connect one story to the next. You should conclude (结束) with a strong “closer,” one last joke that will leave your audience laughing out loud.

Perfect your routine

Once you’ve created your set, it’s time to practice. You can perform in front of a mirror (镜子).     4     Next, perform in front of a friend or family member who can help you see what people laugh at the most or tell you if any of your jokes are confusing.

Plan a performance

Once you feel comfortable with your stand-up material, it’s time to perform!     5     When you’re ready to perform, remember to take a few deep breaths. Then relax, be yourself, and have fun!

A.Open your set with a joke.
B.But for beginners it’s best to keep it short.
C.Or you can record yourself and play it back.
D.Some people like to perform jokes in public.
E.A party with friends can be a good place to start performing.
F.With an adult’s help, you can find some kid-friendly comedians online.
G.When you have an idea for a joke, approach it like writing a brief story.

【推荐3】How to Grow, Eat Sunflowers

Sunflowers are huge plants with bright yellow flowers. They have a long history in North America. There is evidence that they were used for food and medicine by Native Americans beginning around 1000 B. C.

How to Grow

If you start growing sunflowers from seeds, put them in room-temperature water for 2—8 hours before planting to start the growing process.     1     Plant them after the danger of frost has passed. Choose a place outside that will provide the plants with at least 6—8 hours of direct sunlight each day.

As the plants grow, they will develop long roots that work their way deep into the ground.     2     Dig at least one third of a meter down and remove any rocks.

Mix a large amount of compost (堆肥) into the soil where the plant will grow. Compost provides important, lasting nutrients that will help the plants all seasons long.

How to Eat

To gather the seeds, wait until the plants die back and the flowers start to fall at the end of the season.     3    Cut the flowers off the plants. Then, put them into a bag or container to avoid spilling (洒落) the seeds, which will be loose.

4     Do this over a container. Wash the seeds with water. Set them out to dry overnight.

Sunflower seeds may be eaten cooked or uncooked. To roast the seeds, you need an oven. Set the temperature to 165 degrees Celsius. Once the oven is heated, cook the seeds until they are brown.     5     Boil them in hot salted water for 90 minutes to two hours. Let them dry and then roast them in the oven. Thus, you can make salted seeds.

A.Water the plants when the soil dries.
B.The seeds will start coming out of the head.
C.The process takes anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.
D.Get ready to provide about 2.5 centimeters of water a week.
E.As a result, before planting, it is important to loosen the soil.
F.Remove the seeds by rubbing flowers with your hands or a hard brush.
G.Plant each seed into dirt 2.5 centimeters deep and 15 to 30 centimeters apart.
