Forests in the northern half of the globe could be growing faster now than they were 200 years ago as a result of climate change, according to a study of trees in eastern America. The trees appear to have faster growth rates due to longer growing seasons and higher concentrations (浓度) of carbon dioxide in the     1    .

Geoffrey Parker, a scientist at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Centre in Edgewater, Maryland, said that the increase in the rate of growth was unexpected and might be     2     to the higher temperatures and longer growing seasons documented in the region. The growth may also be influenced by the significant     3     in atmospheric CO2, he said.

“We made a list of reasons these forests could be growing faster and then excluded half of them,” Dr. Parker said. Their study suggests that northern forests may become increasingly important in     4     the influence of man-made CO2 on the climate.

Researchers at the University of Illinois began to study the genes of the bacteria in its gut (肠) and found some answers, after focusing on the rootworm’s own genes and found that the results were mostly inconclusive.

“The bad guy in the story----the western corn rootworm---was actually part of a multi-species plot,” says Joe Spencer, who was part of the study. “No wonder it was hard to figure out what was happening. We were only looking at the most obvious     6     of the story.”

If you really want to understand the animal, you also have to understand the microbes. The rootworm’s gut bacteria are effectively another one of its organs, but an     7     flexible change on that can happen dramatically when     8     to a new food source. One of the world's largest flowers, known as the ''corpse(尸体) flower'', will bloom at the Toronto Zoo – a first for the zoo and the city.

The corpse flower, officially titled Amorphophallus Titanum, has been recorded as having the world's tallest bloom. Extreme conditions produce extremely tough plants. The big difference between "drought—tolerant" plants and these tough plants: metabolism. Many different kinds of plants have developed tactics to weather dry spells. Some plants     1     of water to see them through a drought; others send roots deep down to subsurface water supplies. But once these plants use up their stored water or tap out the underground supply, they cease growing and start to die. They may be able to handle a drought of some length, and many people use the term "drought tolerant" to describe such plants, but they never actually stop needing to     2     water, so Farrant prefers to call them drought     3    .

Resurrection plants, defined as those capable of recovering from holding less than 0.1 grams of water per gram of dry mass, are different.
