River Grading System
The first thing you need to know is about the grading system. In general, beginners and older children will be safest and most comfortable on Grade II and Ⅲ rapids. Those with more experience or advanced river skills can cope with Grade Ⅳ and V rapids.
Key Terms to Know
Your whitewater rafting guide will brief you before you hit the river and will run through the key terms and instructions they’ll likely use. Here are some of the most important that you will hear:
Put in: The starting point of a rafting trip.
Take out: The ending point of a rafting trip.
Swimmer: Anyone who falls out of the raft is called a swimmer. Your guide might shout “swimmer!” to get that person’s attention when attempting a rescue, as they’re unlikely to know every passenger’s name.
Safety Tips
The most important safety tip is always to follow your guide’s instructions. They are trained to keep you safe during what can be quite a risky activity to the untrained. Avoid taking valuables on a rafting trip, including cameras, unless you have a dry bag.
What to Wear
Tour companies will provide you with the essential equipment, including paddles (划桨), life jackets, and helmets. Your clothing is up to you, but you’ll be expected to wear suitable shoes. Cotton clothing isn’t a great idea because it is cold when wet.
1. Which of the following is unnecessary for you to know when rafting?A.Hours of service. | B.Rafting levels. |
C.Safety rules. | D.Carry-on items. |
A.Older children can be upgraded to Grade V. |
B.You need to know some key terms while rafting. |
C.It needs some special skills but not demanding. |
D.An experienced raftman can be graded into Grade III. |
A.A hat. | B.A life jacket. | C.A cotton T-shirt. | D.A pair of slippers. |

Mum has sweet memories of the food from her home town in Sichuan, and often cooks spicy dishes. Thanks to this, Dad has come to love hot pot! But there are still some dishes that Dad dare not try even after many years of marriage to my mother. Even today he still does not take to eating things like chicken feet.
But I enjoy that sort of food myself. Last week, I went to the butcher's and asked, "Do you have pigs' ears?" "No," the butcher said, pulling at his own ears, "just these ordinary ones." He must have thought I was joking.
Dad can cook a super "full English breakfast" of bacon, eggs, beans, sausages and toast with butter. Mum and I just have to find a way to get him into the kitchen! He also does a typical Sunday roast. We all love roast beef and vegetables.
I'll never forget my first visit to China. Mum encouraged me to try different kinds of food. But just when I thought I could deal with all Chinese food, I came across stinky tofu, a horrible grey thing that looked and smelt like a burnt sports shoe. I gathered all my courage to take a bite and was amazed to find it wasn't so bad. It reminded me of blue cheese, a similarly strong smelling type of food you either love or hate. Maybe I'll fall in love with stinky tofu, someday.
People say that one man's meat is another man's poison, but I feel at home with food from both my cultures.
1. What can we learn from this passage? ______A.I have enjoyed the food from two cultures since a little child. |
B.Because of my Mum, Dad loves all kinds of Chinese food. |

Rolex, the whisper of success
According to Hans Wilsdorf, founder of the exclusive watch, he tried everything to give his new product a proper name. Wilsdorf was looking for something short that could be easily pronounced. It also had to look good on the watch's surface.
After combining all the letters in thousands of ways and coming up with a hundred names, none seemed powerful enough. But a trip on a horse-drawn carriage changed it, because a "genius," as he called it, whispered the word "Rolex" into his ear.
Zara, taking inspiration from a movie
When Amancio Ortega wanted to name his clothing business, he called it "Zorba," like the 1964 movie, Zorba The Greek, as he was a big fan of Anthony Quinn.
However, shortly before the opening in 1975, he realized that his store was pretty close to a bar named, "Zorba." Since it would be very confusing to the customers to have 2 businesses with the same name in such a small distance, Ortega decided to add an "a" and remove the "b" creating the name of one of the most recognizable Spanish brands in the world.
Häagen-Dazs, Danish?...pride
This ice cream went a long way to satisfy the tastes of the American public. Its creator, Reuben Mattus, was actually a Jewish immigrant from Poland who lived in the United States.
Naming his ice cream Häagen-Dazs, he fulfilled a double purpose. Mattus wanted to honor Denmark, the only country that defended Jewish people during World War II, so he used Danish spelling in the name of his brand. He also wanted to add a bit of exoticism (异国情调), since it was ice cream of the highest quality. He was sure the name would give his product a more distinguished image.
1. How did Hans Wilsdorf come up with Rolex?A.He was struck by his inspiration. | B.A man called Genius told him. |
C.He combined all the letters in many ways. | D.The horse carriage helped him. |

“The ideal e-skin will mimic(模仿) the many natural functions of human skin, such as sensing temperature and touch, accurately and in real time,” says leading researcher Yichen Cai. However, making suitably flexible electronics that can perform such delicate tasks while also used repeatedly is challenging, and each material involved must be carefully engineered.
Most e-skins are made by putting an active sensor on the surface that attaches to human skin. However, the connection between them is often too weak, which reduces the durability and sensitivity of the material; otherwise, if it is too strong, it won’t be flexible enough, making it more likely to break the circuit.
“The landscape of skin electronics keeps shifting at a remarkable pace,” says Cai. “The discovery of 2D sensors has accelerated efforts to turn these quite thin but strong materials into functional, durable artificial skins.”
The new man-made skin built by the researchers could sense objects from 20 centimeters away. It could further make a quick response when touched in less than one tenth of a second. “ It is a striking achievement for an e-skin to maintain toughness after repeated use,” said Shen, “which mimics the softness and rapid recovery of human skin.”
This type of e-skin could monitor a range of biological information, such as changes in blood pressure, which can be detected from movements of arms and legs. This data can then be shared and stored on the cloud via Wi-Fi.
“One remaining problem to the widespread use of e-skins lies in mass production of high-resolution sensors,” adds group leader Vincent Tung “ however, the latest technology offers new promise. ”
1. What’s the feature of the new e-skin?A.It can store information. | B.It’s quite hard and tough. |
C.It’s flexible and sensitive. | D.It can replace human skin. |

Despite the progress that has been made in genetics and psychology, human intelligence has remained one of the most controversial areas of modern science, until now, that is, for the discovery of a gene linked to intelligence has made the experts think again.
Robert Plomin of the Institute of Psychiatry in London and his colleagues in the US have been looking into genetic make-up. From their research, they have discovered that a slightly different gene is more common in those with a high IQ. Plomin analyzed DNA from two groups of 51 children aged between 6 and 15. What he found was that the first group had an IQ of 136, putting them in the top 5% of the population, while the other group had an average IQ of 103. An analysis of their genes showed that 32% of children in the higher group had the gene in question, while only 16% in the second group did. However, there is a lot more research to be done, and Plomin himself is cautious at this early stage. He suggests that there are probably many genes that contribute to intelligence, rather than just one.
Several studies have shown a strong link between IQ and career success, although some psychologists remain unconvinced about this. Professor Michael Rowe, who has written a book called Genius Explained, is one of these. “The people with the highest IQs are not usually the ones who do best in their careers.”
Many psychologists now believe that when it comes to intelligence, IQ isn’t everything. Many alternative views have been put forward recently. One example is the idea of multiple intelligences, which was developed in the 1980s by Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner. This offers a much broader view than the IQ theory, including creativity and communication skills as relevant factors in intelligence.
Tony Buzan, brain expert and author of Master your Memory, is enthusiastic about this belief, arguing that true geniuses do indeed appear to combine high levels of each type of intelligence. He lists Alexander the Great, Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein as examples. At the same time, Buzan believes that everyone can develop their intelligence, only if they take the trouble to exercise their brain. Perhaps there’s hope for us all!
1. What is the topic of the passage?A.The relationship between genes and intelligence. |
B.IQ benefits a lot from high intelligence. |
C.How to develop intelligence. |
D.What makes intelligence. |
A.To make a suggestion. | B.To draw a conclusion. |

Where can see rainforest?
You can see rainforest in many national parks in Queensland. Some parks have facilities for bushwalking; others are suitable only for experienced walkers. If you would like to know more about rainforest, check with your local Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service Office.
Threats to survival
Weeds, fire, wild animals(pigs, dogs and cats), clearing for residential development, and visitor pressures(eg. littering)threaten remaining rainforest biodiversity.
Fragmented rainforest is particularly under threat. Private landholders who have rainforest habitat on their property can help conserve this special ecosystem and the many plant and animal species living within it.
How you can help
Stay on walking tracks. Delicate ground cover plants are easily trampled.
Clean your boots beforehand to avoid introducing soil virus.
Remember, everything is protected. Don’t pick, break or remove any plants.
Don’t feed native animals. Feeding is harmful and may lead to aggressive behavior.
Leave the rainforest as you found it. Take your rubbish home with you. Buried rubbish uncovered by forest animals can harm them.
Leave your pets at home. They are not allowed in national parks and can chase, scare and kill animals.
If you camp within the park, disturb the forest floor as little as possible. Don’t cut trees for tent poles or clear plants around your campsite.
Only use fuel stoves when cooking in rainforests Nutrient recycling is critical in a rainforest so gathering leaf litter and dead branches for fires can cause damage.
Don’t use soap, toothpaste, sunscreen or detergent in waterways. They pollute the water and harm aquatic animals.
1. How can you appreciate the rainforest in Queensland?A.By building facilities in the national parks. |
B.By accumulating experience of walking. |
C.By bushwalking in the national parks. |
D.By checking with the local people. |
A.Gathering dead branches for firewood. |
B.Cleaning your boots while walking. |
