It’s interesting that technology often works as a servant for us, yet frequently we become a servant to it. E-mail is a useful tool but many feel controlled by this new tool. The average business person is getting about 80e-mails per day and many feel that about 80% of the messages in their “Inbox” are of little or no value. So, I have four suggestions to help you to become better at “Erasing E-mail”.

1.Get off the lists. The best way to deal with a problem is to never have it. If you are receiving a lot of unwanted e-mails, ask to be removed from the various lists. This would include your inclusion in unwanted lists.
2.“Unlisted address”. Just as you keep an “unlisted” telephone number that you share only with those whom you want to have direct access to, you might want to get a separate e-mail address only for the important communications you wish to receive.
3.Check it once or twice per day. Many I speak with are becoming chained to their email server, monitoring incoming email continuously. Maybe this is because e-mail creates its own sense of urgency, but most of thecommunications are not all that urgent. I respond to them a couple of times per day.
4.Deal with it. As you open each e-mail, do one of the following:
a. If it requires a quick response, respond to it and delete it.
b. If it requires a response but is not the best use of your time, try to find someone else to do it.
c. If it is going to take any serious amount of time to respond, schedule it for action in your Day Planner andthen download the message, save it, or print it out for future action.

I personally receive about 250 e-mails per day and by practicing the suggestions above, I can handle thatvolume in about an hour, taking advantage of this fantastic tool but not being controlled by it to make sure I’mdoing more important tasks in my day.

1. For the important communications, the writer suggests that you ________.
A.have a direct access for them
B.have several e-mail servers for them
C.get a separate e-mail address for them
D.get an unlisted phone number for them
2. To avoid being chained by the coming e-mails, what you can do is to ________.
A.respond urgent ones only
B.reply to all of them at the same time
C.handle them a couple of times daily
D.keep replying to e-mails all day long
3. To deal with an e-mail you get, you can do the following EXCEPT ________.
A.responding right away if it’s urgent
B.downloading every e-mail before you reply
C.scheduling it for later reply if it takes much time
D.asking someone else to reply to it if it’s not at your convenience

【推荐1】Why you shouldn't punish your kids for lying

Getting your children to stop lying is challenging. There are many influences(TV,movies and video games)in which lies are common. Children see parents lie to others,if only to be polite. Most parents add to that with tales about the lives and activities of Santa Claus or the tooth fairy.     1

The most common reactions to children who lie are explaining why it is wrong and punishments.     2     Here are three better tools supported by research to use instead.

Give praise: You could ask your child to say something that happened at school that is true. When your child obeys, praise him enthusiastically. Be specific.     3     and give your child a hug or a high five. Aim for one or two interactions(互动)like this a day. If you happen to "catch" your child in a lie,say something like,“That is not true and could get you in trouble outside of the home.”

Act as a model: Explicitly(明确地)tell the truth. This could be about something that happened when you were a child or something that happened during the day. It need not be dramatic. Another option is to play a game at dinner. Each person tells one thing that was true that day. Again, give a little praise to the child who normally lies if she plays along.

Decrease punishments and moralizing(说教):They are unlikely to change behavior or develop the conduct you want.     4     Rather, use very mild punishments(light scolding, short loss of privileges,a brief timeout). More severe punishments(shouting, taking away something for a week, hitting)are not more effective in actually changing the frequency of lying.

5     Usually they can be dropped by then. It is unlikely that lying will be completely removed, but with the right encouragement,it can be dramatically lessened.

A.It is not what that is,but about practice.
B.As ways of changing behavior, these are ineffective.
C.That does not mean ignoring, lying or letting it go.
D.“That was great! You told me what happened just like I asked. Wow!”
E.Try these procedures for two to three weeks and see where you are.
F.“You did a good job,but what you said was not what I'd like to know!”
G.Parents do this out of love, but for some children, lying can become a problem.

【推荐2】The healthy adolescent boy or girl likes to do the real things in life,to do the things that matter. He would rather be a plumber’s mate and do a real job that requires doing than learn about hydrostatics(流体静力学)sitting at a desk, without understanding what practical use they are going to be.A girl would rather look after the baby than learn about child care.Logically we should learn about things before doing them and that is probably why the experts enforce this in our educational system. But it is not the natural way---nor,in my view, the best way.The adolescent wants to do things first for only then does the appreciate the problems involved and want to learn more about them.

They do these things better in primitive life, for there at puberty(青春期) the boy joins his father in making canoes, patching huts, going out fishing or hunting. He is serving his apprenticeship in the actual accomplishments of life.It is not surprising that anthropologists(人类学家) find that the adolescents of primitive communities do not suffer from the same neurotic(神经质的) “difficulties” as those of civilized life. This is not,as some assume, because they are permitted more sexual freedom, but because they are given more natural outlets for their native interests and powers and are allowed to grow up freely into a full life of responsibility in the community.

In the 19th century this was recognized in the apprenticeship system, which allowed the boy to go out with the master carpenter,or ploughman,to engage in the actual work of carpentry or roof-mending,and so to learn his trade. In some agricultural colleges at the present time young men have to do a year’s work on a farm before their theoretical training at college. The great advantage of this system is that it lets the apprentice see the practical problems before he sets to work learning how to solve them, and he can therefore take a more intelligent interest in his theoretical work.

Since more knowledge of more things is now required in order to cope with the adult world, the period of growing-up to independence takes much longer than it did in more primitive community, and the responsibility for such education, which formerly was in the hands of the parents,is now necessarily undertaken by experts at school. But that should not make us lose sight of the basic principle, namely the need and the desire of the adolescent to engage responsibly in the real pursuits of life and then to learn how—to learn through responsibility, not to learn before responsibility.

1. According to the author, what is the natural way of education?
A.Doing things while learning.B.Doing things before learning.
C.Doing things as an apprentice.D.Learning practical knowledge first.
2. The main advantage of the natural way of education, whether in primitive or modern times,is that learners      .
A.can learn the trade through solving problems at work
B.can work with their masters throughout their learning
C.are given opportunities to develop their interest first
D.are given more freedom in doing things and learning
3. According to context,“this” in the third paragraph refers to ________.
A.the kind of skills boys learned from their father
B.the difficulties modern adolescents experience
C.the amount of freedom in learning in primitive life
D.the way of learning in primitive communities
4. Which of the following sums up the author’s main point?
A.The apprenticeship system was effective in learning.
B.Learning to solve problems is learning through responsibility.
C.Students develop their interest through learning.
D.Students should be given more freedom in learning.

【推荐3】Picture this: You’re searching the Internet and come across a website with interesting articles. Some are news stories. Their goal is to share information. Others only look like news stories. They’re actually advertisements, or ads. The goal of an ad is to get you to buy something. How do you, the reader, tell the difference between a news story and an ad?

Back when I was growing up, it was easier. We got most of our information from newspapers. Big news stories appeared on the front page, and ads were boxed off and clearly labeled. But on the Internet, the two are often presented together. It can be hard to tell which is which.

That’s why the research group I direct conducted a study. My research team showed kids like you the home page of a popular digital magazine. We asked them to tell us what was a news story and what was an ad. Most were great at identifying certain types   of ads. “It has a coupon code, a big company logo, and the words limited time offer,” one student wrote about an ad on the site. So where did kids get stumped?

Some ads seem the same as real news stories. They have headlines and contain information. But they may also include the words sponsored content. Sponsored means “paid for,” and content refers to the information in the story. “Sponsored content” is a way of saying that something is an ad. Most kids in our study, even if they used the Internet often, didn’t know this.

Just because something is sponsored doesn’t necessarily mean it’s false. It means someone paid money for it to appear. Companies pay so that readers will see their stories, buy their products, and like what the company stands for.

As a reader, you have a right to know who’s behind the information you’re consuming. So look for the phrase sponsored content. (And look carefully. Sometimes, it will be written in tiny letters.) The Internet is a vast sea of information. To use it well, we not only have to know how to swim but also how to avoid the sharks. Learning to tell the difference between an ad and a news story is an important step to becoming Internet smart.

1. The purpose of the first paragraph is to ______.
A.tell the difference between a news story and an ad
B.criticize the websites for too many ads on them
C.show the writer’s preference for newspapers
D.make readers interested and involved in what is going to be talked about
2. Sponsored content means ______.
A.the website gets paid for allowing something to appear on it
B.something is false
C.something isn’t necessarily an ad
D.readers have to buy the products advertised on the website
3. What does “sharks” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Fierce sea animals.
B.Very bad people on the Internet.
C.Unwanted information.
D.Websites which contain ads.
4. Which is the best title?
A.Watch Out for Traps on the Internet
B.Make the Most of the Internet
C.Be Internet Smart
D.Be Aware of Your Rights
