My friend Jennie Crossen gave her bone marrow (骨髓) to a 51-year-old woman with leukemia, a woman she has never met.
At the end of March, the Red Cross called back. Six different blood elements were tested; Jennie matched five completely and was about a 3/4 match of the sixth. So she was the best match.
In April, Jennie went for a complete physical exam by one of the doctors who would perform the surgery. The doctor had to make sure that it would be no threat to her. The doctor told her that the surgery would entail having two quarts of bone marrow extracted from her hip bones. Jennie would probably be released the same day the surgery took place and should expect to be sore for a couple of months.
“I didn’t think it was that big a deal until I realized I was a match,” Jennie said, “There wasn’t a question in my head. It didn’t seem like something that was going above and beyond.”
Jennie was left with two very small scars on her lower back from the surgery and was given medication to help dull the pain. She still felt a great deal of pressure on her lower back. “Being only 21, I feel like I am not old enough to significantly impact someone’s life,” Jennie said, “It seems strange to me that I could possibly save this woman’s life which was being cut short by cancer.”
Three weeks after the surgery, Jennie received a call from the Red Cross representative who told her the transplant was successful. “I feel good, and I think it will actually work for her,” she said, “So many people say they’d only donate if it was for a family member or close friend. This woman is someone’s family and someone’s friend. Obviously, no one she knows is a match, and the fact that you’d be able to help a perfect stranger is great.”

So when her mom called to ask if she’d like to go shopping at the local fabric (布料) store for the coming Christmas, she couldn’t say no because she knew she badly needed some fabrics to make new clothes for her children. “I remember walking around, gazing at all this beautiful fabric, wondering whether there is anything cheap that I could afford. And I could still get some money left to buy Christmas gifts for my family.”
Well, Terry’s mom must have known what Terry was thinking. Smiling kindly, she whispered to Terry, “You pick any fabrics you like. It’s your Christmas gift from me.” Terry’s eyes were filed with tears as the cart began to overflow with many fabrics, but not because Terry was planning on making herself a pretty dress or a pair of curtains for the kitchen. Rather, Terry’s mom’s kindness had inspired some holiday gift ideas in Terry, and it didn’t take long for Terry to figure out what she was going to do with all that fabric.
“I was going to make my first quilt (被子),” she explains. “Every night I would work on this queen-size quilt. With every stitch (一针), I thought about all that my mom had done for me over the course of my childhood, during which we were always battling homelessness, but Mom somehow managed to fill our lives with love and make everything okay.”

When someone who is in good health dies suddenly, there is usually an inquest (死因调查) in western countries.
The coroner (验尸官) does this kind of work. His job is to find out exactly how a person died.
If there is nothing wrong with the death, he will decide that the person died from natural causes or an accident. If, however, he is suspicious, he may decide that a person or persons unknown caused the person's death.
At one inquest, the coroner was trying to find out exactly what had caused the death of a businessman, Henry Smith.
The man's wife was giving her evidence (证据).She was very sad and had to stop from time to time.
The coroner did not want to make her more unhappy than necessary, but he had to find out the truth. There were questions he had to ask her.
"Mrs. Smith, I know this is painful for you, "he said, "but I want you to think very carefully and then answer my questions. You and your husband were having dinner at home. Is that correct?"
"Yes."
"Suddenly he fell to the floor?"
"Yes."
"You stood up and hurried to him? You stood beside him? He was in great pain?"
"Yes."
"Did he say anything?"
The wife lowered her head.
"Please, Mrs. Smith, you must answer the question. What were his last words?"

Bol built a dollhouse-size structure that looked like a schoolhouse on a post and he put it in his yard as a free community library to remember his mother, who was a book lover and school teacher. Bol’s prototype gave birth to Little Free Library (LFL), a nonprofit organization that seeks to place small, accessible book exchange boxes in neighborhoods around the world. The concept is simple: Neighbors are invited to share a book, leave a book, or both. Today, there are over 50, 000 of these libraries registered in 70 countries.
Almost everyone can register with LFL and start a library as long as the person keeps it in good shape and makes sure that book materials are appropriate for his or her neighborhood. Library owners can create their own library boxes; therefore, the libraries are usually unique in appearance, and there seems to be no limit to the possibilities. One library in California was built out of a used wine container; another in Texas had tiny stairs and bright colored walls. Once registered, libraries are given a number at LFL’s website. The LFL Index lists the locations of all libraries with GPS coordinates (坐标) and other information. Owners receive a sign saying “Little Free Library”.
People say they have been attracted to pick up a book when walking by a Little Free Library, out of curiosity and because it’s convenient. Some library owners say they have met more neighbors since having a little library in their front yard. Bol is also most proud of the way Little Free Library is bringing communities together. “It’s started a neighborhood exchange. It gets people talking and more comfortable with their neighbors,” he says. “This leads to them helping each other.”

Amy Wolff was first encouraged to start planting the encouraging signs after she had a heartbreaking discussion with a friend in May 2017. “We were hanging out with friends when one of them mentioned the growing number of people trying to kill themselves in our community,” says Wolff. “I wasn’t a doctor. I didn’t know of anyone suffering from thoughts of self-harm. What could I do?”
Then Wolff got the idea to start planting encouraging signs in people’s yards. For the following two weeks, she and her kids started knocking on people’s doors across their town of Newburg, Oregon and asking if they could put up signs with messages like “Don’t Give Up” and “Your Mistakes Don’t Define You”.
Wolff then started receiving messages from other people in the community wanting to buy the signs. Within a few days, Wolff had sold over 150 of the yard signs. That night, Wolff’s husband created a website to sell the signs.
“Within a year, we had news media in Dallas, Boston, Massachusetts, and Portland cover our movement,” she added. By the fall of 2018, Wolff set up the Don’t Give Up organization for her signs. Since she planted her first sign two years ago, she has shipped the organizations messages of encouragement to all 50 US states and 26 countries in 6 languages.
With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, the messages that Wolff has received from sign owners are meaningful. One message from Frank reads: “I just had a woman knock on my door. Mother was right,as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer.I hitchhiked(搭便车) to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station and got turned down every time.
In one studio,a kind lady told me that big stations couldn’t risk hiring an inexperienced person.“Go out in the sticks and find a small station that’ll give you a chance,” she said.
So I returned to my hometown—Dixon,Illinois. While there was no radioannouncing jobs in Dixon,my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn’t hired.
My disappointment must have shown. “Everything happens for the best,” Mom reminded me.I tried WOC Radio in Davenport,Iowa. The program director named Peter MacArthur told me they had already hired an announcer.
As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked aloud, “How can a fellow get to be a sports announcer if he can’t get a job in a radio station?”
I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling,“What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he asked me to broadcast an imaginary game before a microphone. As a result, I did a wonderful job, and was told to broadcast Saturday’s game.
On my way home,as I have many times since,I thought of my mother’s words.I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I’d gotten the job at Montgomery Ward.
