Ancient Chinese folk painting and many other art styles have been passed down from generation to generation, and are still practiced in different parts of China. Here’s a look at four unique Chinese folk art forms.
Chinese Opera is the traditional form of Chinese drama. According to incomplete statistics, in China’s various ethnic regions there are about more than 360 kinds of operas. The most famous ones include Peking Opera, Kunqu Opera, Yueju Opera, Yuju Opera, Sichuan Opera, Fujian Opera, Hebei opera, Huangmei Opera and so on, in total more than 50, among which Peking Opera is the most popular in China.
Shadow Play dates back to Western Han Dynasty in Shaanxi more than 1000 years ago. The moving figures, usually carved out from leather, are operated by folk artists, accompanied by music and singing. It is the world’s first dubbed (配音的) motion picture art form, thus considered the “ancestor” of modern film. Today this art form is still popular in northern China.
Paper-cutting is one of the most popular traditional decorative arts in China with a long history. Paper-cutting can be seen across China and it has even developed into different local genres (流派). They are usually used to decorate gates and windows during festivals.
The Kite was invented by Chinese people. According to legend the earliest kite in China was a wooden bird by Mo Di in the Eastern Zhou dynasty. Later his student Lu Ban improved the tech and used bamboo as material to make a kite. Today, various kite-flying activities can be found in different regions of China. Shandong Weifang Kite Festival is held every year and attracts lots of kite lovers and travelers.

It is reported that the box office (票房) takings in China have been growing at an impressive rate in the past five years, which indicates that China, the world’s second-largest movie market, is closing the gap with the United States, the world’s top cinema market.
Cao Yin, director of the program center at China Movie Channel, said that China has the most cinema screens of any country, and the number is increasing steadily. Saying that China has signed coproduction agreements with more than 20 countries, Cao added it has deepened cinematic exchanges between Chinese filmmakers and their foreign counterparts (同行).

Recently, over 80 percent of the world’s top 100 highest box-office titles have been action films. Tong said the action film, in which plots are basically secondary to dazzling stunts (特技), is one of the easiest ways to appeal to foreign audiences. But it has been a decades-long struggle for Chinese filmmakers to sell their stories overseas. When asked what kinds of Chinese films would have the most global appeal, Yan Zhaozhu, chairman of the Taihu World Cultural Forum, said stories that address universal issues, such as environmental protection and climate change, are perhaps the best options.

Her life had been strewn with obstacles and marked by periods of tumult (骚乱): a childhood of desperate poverty, a deeply religious mother who considered her daughter’s career choice “immoral,” and a stormy celebrity marriage to jazz trumpeter Miles Davis in the 1980s. Also looming over her career were the persistent limitations in an entertainment industry that cast Black women in disgraceful roles as prostitutes, drug addicts and housemaids.
Ms. Tyson said she refused many such roles offered to her, making a serious promise to accept only parts of “strength, pride and dignity.” Because of her uncompromising selectivity, she was out of work for months and sometimes years at a stretch, even after her breakthrough, Oscar-nominated performance as a sharecropper ‘s(佃农) wife in “Sounder’(1972), a drama set in the Depression-era South.
“I wait for roles—first, to be written for a woman, then, to be written for a black woman,” she told the Entertainment News Service in 1997. “And then I have the bravery to be selective about the kinds of roles I play. I’ve really got three strikes against me. So, aren’t you amazed I’m still here?”
At 89, she capped her career with a Tony Award for her performance as a spirited widow in “The Trip to Bountiful,” a 2013 Broadway revival of the Horton Foote drama. She returned to Broadway in 2015 opposite James Earl Jones in a revival of “The Gin Game,” D.L. Coburn’s two-character play set in a nursing home. That same year, she was a Kennedy Center honoree, receiving the award for a lifetime of powerful performances in roles that shattered boundaries for African American women. The next year, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

College is a time for new and exciting experiences as well as a time to explore diverse and innovative(创新的)ideas. What could be better than traveling to China to learn about their ideas, history, and culture? I believe studying abroad is something that every college student should do to help to expand his or her horizons, and to appreciate everything the world has to offer. I spent the first eight of my early years living abroad in two countries. From this rich period of growth, I acquired an identity as a global citizen, and the skills to independently navigate life in a foreign culture. It seems appropriate to support my next jump in life with an abroad experience that will show the directions in which I have grown since my early years, as well as provide a unique context for exploring the limits of my education.
Here is an undeniable advantage to living and studying in China; to be submersed in (投入)the Chinese life is the only way to fully understand and learn about how the country impacts and is impacted by the rest of the world. Not only am I learning about China, but I have also come to appreciate other countries in the world from a different point of view. Being in China has given me the change to learn in a different environment, and I do not think there is any better way to learn the culture than to actually be there. I have a very strong admiration for the Chinese language, people, and culture. I will continue to apply my newfound knowledge to my entire life and the way I look at the world around me.

Rings are typically exchanged by couples during their wedding to represent commitment (承诺)to each other.Does it matter if husbands don’t wear a wedding ring?
Prince William’s father wears one, his grandfather doesn’t and their decisions weren’t seen as strange. But reactions to Prince William’s decision show that wedding rings for husbands are now the norm. One young man, who spoke to the BBC, thinks William is setting a bad example, saying: "I think it’s disgraceful (不光彩的).It’s a tradition. You have to wear a ring really. And for someone of the royal family to do that, it’s not right."
Broadly speaking, modern husbands tend to wear their wedding rings as a symbol of loyalty and faithfulness. So not wearing one can seem unusual or even dishonest to some, although men haven’t always worn them.
