After four silent years, the 27-year-old British singer Adele Adkins has finally introduced herself to the world again with Hello, the opening song from her third album 25, which will come out on Nov. 20.
Although Adele is a very successful singer now, music wasn’t always what she saw herself doing. At age 10, when she saw her grandmother’s pain over the death of Adele’s grandfather, she pictured herself as a heart surgeon.
"I wanted to fix people’s hearts," she told the UK music website i-D, remembering the childhood interest she’d had in biology classes until she found out that her real talent was for singing.
Adele didn’t go to medical school, but many would agree that she still has healing(治愈) powers. "Her songs find the kind of memory every listener holds somewhere in their heart. This kind of feeling is what people have always liked in Adele," said The Telegraph. "She writes a pop diary, sharing the simple secrets of her heart."
Most successful pop stars make albums at a fast pace, but not Adele. After her second album 21 won the 2012 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, she made it clear with her label that she would spend "four or five years" making her next album. She told Vogue magazine, "I won’t come out with new music until it’s better than 21."
Instead of seeking fame, Adele remained silent and moved to the countryside. In her free time, she loved to watch TV series Teen Mom, American Horror Story, and The Walking Dead.
Living life as normally as possible is important to the singer’s art. "Nobody wants to listen to a record from someone who’s not living in the real world," Adele told i-D." So I live a low-key life for my fans."

When I was a little girl, you always modelled for fashion photographers. It was years later that I finally understood the role that modelling played in your life. Little did I know you were saving every penny you made to go to law school.
I couldn’t thank you enough for what you told me one autumn afternoon when I was nine. After finishing my homework, I went into the dining room where you were focusing on reading law books. I was confused. Why were you doing what I did — memorising textbooks and studying for tests? When you said you were in law school, I was even more surprised. I didn’t know mums could be lawyers, either. You smiled and said, “In life, you can do anything you want to do.”
Young as I was, those words kept ringing in my ears. I watched as you faced the challenges of completing your studies, starting companies with Dad, while still being a model and a mum of five kids. You never complained or gave up. With your words of wisdom in my mind, I suddenly felt the freedom to pursue my dream. My whole world opened up. I set out to live my life filled with hope, seeing endless possibilities for personal and professional success.
Your words became my motto(座右铭). As I grew up, I always found myself in the unique position of being either the first or one of the few women (chief medical reporters) in my field. I gained strength from your words every time I got into trouble.
Encouraged by your words, I have forged ahead(稳步前进) with my life’s journey, less afraid to make mistakes or to meet challenges. You did it, and now I’m doing it. So much to do, so many dreams to realise.

We think you look great(though some of the outfits you wear worry us!)
Never put yourself at serious risk. This means that you cannot trust people until you really know them and that sometimes you have to avoid things that look like they might be fun. Back in 1989, he and a few of his college friends auditioned (试演) for a music video. The song? MC Hammer’s still-unknown classic, Let’s Get It Started. They were hired on the spot and soon went on tours with him! As the summer came to an end, Zo assumed he’d return to college to finish his degree and reclaim his spot on the football team, but MC Hammer gained great popularity and started taking over the airwaves. Zo had a huge decision to make and ultimately joined MC Hammer as a permanent (长期的) backup dancer! But Zo couldn’t shake his passion for football. He eventually left the group to return to his high school in Oakland, California, where he began coaching track and football.
Decades later, Zo is one of the most well-known and respected college football coaches and doesn’t call much attention to his hip-hop beginnings. But at a training practice in 2017, a familiar song started playing over the PA system (广播系统). It happened that the head coach Brent Brennan had caught wind of Zo’s past and wanted him to show off his moves.
Without missing a beat, Zo dived in and started doing the Hammer Dance he had helped create all those years before. The moves came to him as easily as they had done back in the day, and his players obviously couldn’t get enough of his impressive talent.
Zo is a good reminder of how surprising career paths can be. Just think what would have happened if he hadn’t gone to that audition! The Hammer Dance wouldn’t exist as we know it, which would be a real tragedy (悲剧).

Researchers used machine-learning methods to make the music, which may help them better understand the virus. The research team assigned musical notes to amino acids (氨基酸) that make up the so-called “spiked(刺突)” protein that infects human cells. Machine learning was then used to turn the protein and structural information into a nearly two-hour piece of classical music.
Markus Buehler of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) led the research team. Buehler told the Reuters news agency that turning the protein data into music let people gain a better understanding of something they cannot see. “You would need many different images, many different magnifications (放大) to see with your eyes, while your ears can pick up with just a couple of seconds of music,” he said.
The finished selection was uploaded to the music sharing website SoundCloud. Listeners of the early part of the piece described it with words such as “beautiful”, “interesting”, “calm” and “nature”. Buehler said this part of the music represents the ease at which the spiked protein enters the human cell, making the coronavirus highly infectious. He noted that the virus is very good at “tricking the cell to open the doors” to infect someone. As the virus then reproduces and the spiked protein attaches to more cells, the music becomes louder, faster and more intense. One SoundCloud user noted that this part could represent one of the first signs of the virus in humans, a high body temperature. Others described the more intense part of the music as “scary” and “sad”.
The researchers say a possible next step could be to use the musical method to design an antibody to attack the virus.

At age 8, Eden started writing songs to deal with her fears. Last month, she released (发行) her first song, “Shadows on the Wall.” It’s for kids everywhere who have problems with mental (精神的) health. The point of the song is that the fears “aren’t reality,” said Eden, now 10. “I am bigger than these fears.”
Eden began writing “Shadows on the Wall” in 2019 after attending the Throga Retreat, a youth singing program about two hours from her home in Parkland. There, she met Johnny Cummings, a New York-based singer, songwriter, and producer. After the program, the pair worked together each week through Skype. They finished “Shadows on the Wall” and a second song, “The Last Kid on Earth,” which centers on the idea that although each person is different, we all feel alone sometimes.
Eden wants more grown-ups to understand the influence of COVID-19 on children. “They’re used to running around, playing with their friends. Getting used to new realities was really hard,” Eden said.
Eden and her twin brother, Jordan, recently marked one year of distance learning (远程学习). It was unusual at first. They weren’t getting used to it and missed their days in school. “The Internet has become our whole world,” said Eden. “Technology has become our new way of connecting.”
One lesson from COVID-19, said Eden, is to “find a way to do what you love and be who you are, no matter the environment.” For Eden, that means spending time with the family’s pet, Ollie, and continuing to follow her dream of music and writing. She’s busy with her third song, “The Voices.” “It’s about judging (评价) yourself in your head when you say, ‘I’m not good enough,’” she said. “And then realizing, ‘I am good enough. I am good enough for me.’ ”

Facebook made me feel uneasy, sad and like a failure. When I went online, it seemed that everyone was in Australia or Thailand. And if they weren't travelling, they were getting married or landing great jobs. I felt like everyone was living the dream and I was still at home with my parents, with my student loan hanging over me.
I also felt that if I wasn't eating at restaurants or posting photos from nights out, people would think I wasn't living. I remember that a friend said to me once, "Yeah, but you're still going out having fun, and I've seen on Facebook." I tried to present myself as always having a great time. If what I posted on social media didn't get more than five likes, I'd delete it.
My life has changed for the better since I stopped using social media. I now enjoy catching up with my friends. When they tell me new plans, my response isn't just, "Yeah, I saw it on Facebook." It makes me realize who my real friends are and how social media takes the joy out of sharing news with people. I also feel less uneasy and less of a failure.
I'm planning to visit a friend in Australia next month. My mom and a couple of other friends want me to go back on Facebook to share my pictures. I'd really prefer not to though.

In school, he was the first disabled child to be integrated into the Australian school system. He was laughed at, avoided and not included on purpose from games. At age 6, Nick tried some prosthetics (假肢) but they were more of restriction than aid because they limited his movement. Apparently, he had learnt how to do some things without them.
