At least 4,000 years ago the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians marked the changing of the year. In Egypt, the year started when the Nile River flooded, enriching farmers’ fields with silt. This happened at the end of September.
The Babylonians held a festival in spring, on March 23, to kick off the next farming cycle. The Babylonian celebration lasted for 11 days.
The date January l was picked by the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar as the change of the year when he established his own calendar in 46 BC. The month of January was named after the Roman god, Janus. He is pictured with two heads. One head looks forward and the other back. They represent a break between the old and new. That new calendar was in time with the sun and it has been used until the present day.
Around the world, different cultures have their own traditions for welcoming the New Year. The Japanese hang straw rope across the front of their houses to keep out evil spirits and bring happiness and good luck. They also have a good laugh as the year begins to get things started on a lucky note.
In India people like to wear pink, red ,purple and white flowers. Women favor yellow, the color of spring. Hindus also leave shrines next to their beds so they see beautiful objects when they wake up.
Canadians enjoy the traditional polar bear swim. People of all ages put on their swimsuits and jump into frozen lakes.

Then there’s the one my Colombian family does every year: the Novena de Aguinaldos. We pray(祈祷)for nine days without a stop, and this Novena counts down the nine days before Christmas. Most Americans have never heard of it, but in Colombia, it’s a big deal.
Like all good traditions, especially around the holidays, this tradition is about community and getting together with friends and family. My family immigrated(移民)from Colombia when I was just two months old. Every year, we gather with a group of Colombian friends for as many of the nine nights as we can.
There are three parts to the Novena de Aguinaldos. The first is the reading: each kid takes turns to read a book. Next comes the gozos, which means “The Joys”. That’s where the music comes in, and everyone gets an instrument, a maraca, a drum, a tin can—whatever you can use to make a sound. And then, the villancicos——Spanish Christmas carols(颂歌)come.
I’ve lived my whole life in the US. There’s not a lot of Colombian culture that we still hang onto. Why do we still carry on with the tradition of celebrating the Novenas, then?
When I asked my parents the other day, the answer was that immigrants didn’t belong anywhere—not where you were, nor where you were from. So my parents helped create a space where we did. Even if the Novenas were nothing like what we might have celebrated if we’d stayed in Colombia, the Novenas became the heart of our community.
But our Novenas are starting to feel a little more breakable. It’s getting harder and harder for everyone to get together each year. Last year, I was studying abroad in Italy and couldn’t make it to any gathering; my brother went off to college and had exams late into December; my sister just moved to a new city, and my parents have taken up jobs in different countries.

Students of the Mount's Impact Club are urging everyone to feed a “silent guest” at this year's Thanksgiving. These students have been holding fundraisers for the World Food Programme (WFP) and trying to get people to join their “silent guest” plan.
Their idea came from the “silent guest” campaign in 1947, which asked Americans to open up their hearts and share their Thanksgiving abundance. Governor Robert Bradford of Massachusetts, whose forefather started Thanksgiving, announced the new tradition of feeding a “silent guest” at the holiday meal.
American families were asked to donate the cost of feeding their “silent guest” to a committee in Massachusetts. The “silent guest” donations from Americans led to CARE packages of food being sent to starving families overseas. This was important for many countries in Europe, who were still suffering from the destruction caused by World War Ⅱ.
The food from the “silent guest” helped keep Europe afloat until Marshall Plan to rebuild could kick in. As George Marshall said, “Food is the very basis of all reconstruction.”
The “silent guest” idea was started by an activist named Iris Gabriel. She approached Governor Bradford, with the plan and eventually governors across the US were on board. This was a giving spirit.
It is a spirit we must keep with us today because the WFP and other relief agencies are facing an incredible challenge with hunger emergencies. Fighting world hunger is no less important than it was in 1947.
That is why it's inspiring that college students are leading the campaign to bring back the “silent guest”. And you can join them by simply setting aside a place in your heart and your holiday table while donating to a charity fighting hunger.

Recycling your old books means you give them to another person, family or group, instead of leaving them to take up space and get dusty. This means that the books you love can be enjoyed by others too. Recycling and giving away your books can be helpful in lots of ways. People will discover new reads and authors they didn’t know about. Books can sometimes be expensive, so it also helps people and families who can’t afford to buy them. When a person gets to read a variety of authors, styles and subjects, it can help them to develop a love of books, boost their confidence in reading and writing and improve their health and happiness. If you take part in a book-recycling scheme, you can pick up new reads too. Having your imagination taken away by the power of a fascinating book is a great way to relax, have fun, visit different worlds and forget about things that may be worrying you. Reading introduces you to new words, inspiring ideas and fascinating facts.
The Children’s Book Project is a charity that recycles books (in good condition) and passes them on to places like schools and children’s centres. When you donate books, they are cleaned and sorted into age groups and reading levels. Liberty Venn from the Children’s Book Project says, “It’s an amazing feeling to pass on your books and know that someone will enjoy them as much as you did. At the Children’s Book Project we help to extend the life of over 250,000 books each year.”

Previous research has focused on how a male or female voice sounds. Men with deeper voices and women with slightly higher voices were thought to sound more attractive.
But the new study, published by a linguist in Canada, suggests there is a more complex mechanism(机制)at play. Dr. Molly Babel, from the University of British Columbia in Canada, said, “The voice is an amazingly flexible tool that we use to construct our identity. Very few things in our voices are changeless, so we felt that our preference had to be about more than a person’ s shape and size.”
She recorded 30 volunteers, voices and asked each to rate the others attractiveness on a scale of one to nine. Each participant was from Western America, with similar accents. The people we assessed were all in the same dialect group, but they showed different degrees.
“We seem to like people whose voices are like our voices, and we like people who fit within what we know,” Dr. Babel said. She also found that breathy voices in women — typified by the famous American actress Marilyn Monroe — were seen as more attractive.
The breathy tone, caused by younger and thinner vocal cords(声带), implied youthfulness and health. A creaky voice, suggesting a person has a cold or is tired, was seen as unattractive. The participant preferred men who spoke with a shorter average word length and deeper voices.
1. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.A.compare male voices with female voices |
B.inform readers of the new findings of voices |

The unpunctual man, on the other hand, never does what he has to do at the proper time. He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both time and his good name. A lost thing may be found again, but lost time can never be regained. Time is more valuable than material things. In fact, time is life itself. The unpunctual man is forever wasting and mismanaging his most valuable things as well as others. The unpunctual person is always complaining that he finds no time to keep appointments, answer letters, or return calls promptly.
A punctual person can be very busy and really has a great deal to do. What is different is that he is very careful of his time and seldom complains of shortage of it. He knows that he cannot get through huge amount of work unless he faithfully deals with every piece of work when it has to be attended to.
Failure to be punctual in keeping one’s appointments is a sign of disrespect towards others. If a person is invited to dinner and arrives later than the appointed time, he keeps all the other guests waiting for him. Usually this will be regarded as a great disrespect to the host and all other guests present.
Unpunctuality, moreover, is very harmful when it comes to doing one’s duty, whether public or private. Imagine how it would be if those who are put in charge of (负责) important tasks failed to be at their proper place at the appointed time. A man who is known to be habitually unpunctual is never trusted by his friends or fellow men.

Affordable, great sound. I love added memory via the microSD Slot. If you want an iPod, just spend 6 times as much and you’ll have one.

Overall, for the money, this is a great buy.
The music functionality is everything that I would like — intuitive and easy to navigate. The only issue is that scrolling occasionally pauses for a second or two. Having FM and voice recording is a big plus, as is the easy drag-and-drop way of getting my MP3's on the device. The sound quality is quite good, especially through a proper sound system or a quality headset.

Good sound quality, Great price. I don't actually use the video on this device so I don't know how well that feature works, but I do store MP3's and photos there. One thing: I wish I had also gotten a screen protector laminate. My screen got scratched up recently.

The study published this week in Science Advance was led by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, together with other scientists in the United States, United Arab Emi rates , Finland and Canada.
According to the research, the main Arctic rivers bring more heat to the Arctic Ocean than they did in 1980. River heat is one of the reasons that cause sea ice loss of the Arctic Ocean. That loss is equal to about 120,000 square miles of 1-mcter thick ice. "If Alaska were covered by 1-meter thick icc. 20% of Alaska would be gone," explained Igor Polyakov, a re- searcher at the University of Alaska Fairbanks' International Arctic Research Center.
Rivers have the greatest influence during spring. The wanning water pours into the ice covered Arctic Ocean and spreads below the ice, slowly destroying it. Once the sea ice melts(融化), the warm water makes the temperature go up. The research found that much more river heat energy entered the air. Since air is mobile, this means river heat can influence areas of the Arctic far from river deltas (三角洲).
The influence was the most prominent in the Siberian Arctic, where several large rivers go into the Arctic Ocean. Canada's Mackenzie River is the only river large enough to contribute to sea ice meh near Alaska, but the state's smaller rivers are also a source of heat.
Polyakov says that rising global air temperatures will continue to warm Arctic rivers in the future. As rivers heat up, more warm water will flow into the Arctic Ocean, melting more sea ice,

Depression(沮丧) is a state of mind that most of us experience at some point of time. There are some periods in our life when everything seems difficult. It seems that everything is getting worse and we have no control over our life. Studies have shown that music can be an important mood lifter in such situations. Music also plays a great role in making us feel less nervous or worried. Anxiety(焦虑) can often cause loss of sleep and other illnesses.
Music is often known as an international language. We may not know the language another person is speaking, but most of us respond to music in the same way. Music can often be the best way to connect with someone.
Music is one of the best ways to improve your moods, but this can depend largely on the kind of music you listen to. While happy music can certainly make you feel better, sad music can further lower your spirits. Listening to classical music can often make you feel a lot more powerful, while soft music can be the perfect way to relax at the end of a long way. If you want to use music to change the way how you are feeling, you need to understand the role of it, learn to recognize the kind of music that lifts your mood and helps you feel better. Once you realize the kind of music you can use, you can use it to change the way you feel. The right kind of music can be the perfect way to help us feel happier.

When you approach the High Line on the west side of Manhattan, what you see first is the kind of thing urban parks were created to get away from—a heavy, black steal structure supporting a raised rail line that once brought freight(货运)trains right into factories, and that looks, at least from a distance, more like some abandoned leftover from the past than an urban oasis(绿洲).
That is what the High Line was until recently. But now, it has been turned into one of the most inviting public spaces. The black steel columns now hold up a raised park. Walking on the High Line, you float about eight meters above the ground. You can sit surrounded by carefully tended plantings and take in the sun and the Hudson River views, or you can walk the line as it winds its way between old buildings and striking new ones. I have walked the High Line dozens of times. Different from any street, sidewalk, or park, it never fails to surprise and delight me. The most extraordinary thing about the High Line is the way without streets to cross or traffic lights to wait for, ten blocks pass as quickly as two.
The High Line is a dream come true. The real heroes of the story are Joshua David and Robert Hammond. “I saw an article saying that the High Line was to be destroyed, and I wondered if anyone wanted to save it,” Hammond said. “I saw that it was on the agenda for a community meeting. I went to see what was going on, and there I met David. We were the only people there who wanted to save it.”
“The railroad representatives showed some plans to reuse it, which enraged(激怒)the people who were trying to get it torn down. We couldn’t believe the degree of rage those people had. Hammond and I asked railroad officials to take them to look at the High Line. When we got up there, we saw a mile and a half of wildflowers. New Yorkers always dream of finding open spaces—it’s fantasy when you live in a studio apartment.” David said. And that’s how the project began.

Instead of paddling a small boat, I followed my Twitter feed.Instead of reading great novels, I stuck to reading four newspapers each morning. I was behaving as if I were still in the office. My body was on vacation, but my head wasn't.
So this year I made up my mind to try something different: withdrawal (撤走、收回) from the Internet. I knew it wouldn't be easy, since I'm bad at self-control. But I was determined. I started by giving the iPad to my wife.
The cellphone signal at our house was worse than in the past, making my attempts at cheating an experience in frustration. I was trapped, forced to go through with my plan. Largely cut off from e-mail, Twitter and my favorite newspaper websites, I had few ways to connect to the world except for the radio and how much radio can one listen to, really? I had to do what I had planned to do all along: read books. This experience has had a happy ending. With determination and the strong support of my wife, I won in my vacation struggle against the Internet, realizing finally that it was I, not the iPad, that was the problem. I knew I had won when we passed a Starbucks and my wife asked if I wanted to stop to use the Wi-Fi. “I don't need it,” I said.
However, as we return to post-vacation life, a harder test begins: Can I continue when I'm back at work?
There are times when the need to know what's being said right now is great. I have no intention of giving up my convenience completely. But I hope to resist the temptation (抵挡住诱惑)to check my e-mail every five minutes, which leads to checking my Twitter feed and a website or two.

Chinese premier Wen Jiabao called the landmarkdebutflight a “complete success”. The descent capsule(返回舱) carrying Lt. Col. Yang Liwei touched down on the grasslands of the Gobi Desert, in central Inner Mongolia at 6:23 am Thursday (Beijing Time), the Beijing-based China's Aerospace Command and Control Center said. Minutes later, Yang grabbed the capsule hatch with his hand, pulled himself out, smiled and waved at recovery teams and reporters. “It is a splendid moment in the history of my motherland and also the greatest day of my life,” Yang, a former fighter pilot from Northeast China's Liaoning Province, said immediately after emerging. In an interview with CCTV, China's state television, Yang said he was “feeling excellent”. Shenzhou 5 landed at dawn, 4.8 kilometres (3 miles) from its designed landing target, the officials said. “The spaceship operated well,” the astronaut Yang Liwei said in his first publicized comments. “I feel very good and I am proud of my motherland.” After a physical exam on spot, Yang's condition was found as "good." Within hours, Chinese space officials announced that the country's space dreams will continue with a "Shenzhou 6" mission, most possibly within a year. They said China also had worked out plans to conduct space walking by its astronauts, and eventually build up a space station. However, Chinese scientists ruled out building a space shuttle, like the United States.
Yang's flight came four decades after the former Soviet Union and the United States pioneered manned spaceflight. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth in April 1961. One month later, the United States launched Alan B. Shepard Jr.
