When Lone Star College student Dwyanya Earnhardt first heard about a food pantry(食品室)opening at her college in September 2015, she was embarrassed to ask for help, but knew she needed it. she’s used the food pantry several times since.

Lone Star Montgomery Campus is among a growing number of US colleges opening food pantries for students. In the Houston area alone, San Jacinto College and the University of Houston Downtown(UHD) have also added them. UHD opened its food pantry in spring 2015. it’s hoping to increase its use among students through a program being launched this term. About 100 to 150 students will be awarded food scholarships to use in a new food bank constructed inside the student services building.

“More students of different backgrounds have access to higher education, but that you got in doesn’t mean you have the support coming from home to keep you in,” said Patrick Jefferson, UHD”s assistant vice president for student affairs.

“Many of the students come after work, take their class, then they go home, and they don’t leave their challenges at the front door,” said Jefferson. “We’re recognizing that we just can’t ay. ‘We only worry about our students’ academic challenges.’ We have to think about the student as a whole person.”

The majority of donations to Lone Star’s food pantry have come from teachers and students. The food pantry is open from noon until 3 p. m. on Tuesdays and Fridays, but students can request it at another time if needed. Nearly 590 students have used the pantry since it opened last fall.

San Jacinto College has been offering food pantry services twice a month to students since 2013. The college sends a bag of items on certain days and has received more than 1,000 student requests since it began. It allows students from all income levels to request food. UHD and Lone Star Montgomery Campus also follow the same policy.

【推荐2】I was enjoying this afternoon more than I had expected. Often, the tryouts for the spring musical tested the limits of my patience and nerves, with one hopeful girl after another taking turns walking onto the wooden stage, delivering an adequate but uninspired version of some Rodgers & Hammerstein number, and then being politely excused by Mrs Dominguez as the next name on the list was called.

Then, she would call the first name off her list and the room would drop into an uncomfortably serious silence as the first student walked nervously up to the stage. I often imagined during those moments that I was witness to a death-house liver taking his march toward a quick curtain.

But not this year. I had decided to make a show of my own self-confidence by volunteering to go first. Such a fearless act, I had figured, would probably instill even more fear into my competition because they would realize that I had something they clearly lacked. Mrs. Dominguez had seemed neither surprised nor charmed by my decision to go first. Although she was annoyed by my escalating pride, I also acknowledged that I was one of the more talents actors and was probably correct in assuming myself a winner.

At this late stage of the afternoon, I felt like a queen, sitting in the back of the auditorium with my royal court of friends and admirers. They took care to sit far enough away from Mrs Dominguez that they would not be caught in the act of belittling the other students’ auditions.

To me, the endless parade of the ambitious who sang their hearts out for three minutes each were like clowns performing for my amusement. As Mrs Dominguez read another name off her list, I prepared myself for a special treat.

Many years ago, when my girls were in primary school, they were crazy about the dance breaks they would occasionally have during the school day. Before the programme, she might have had one or two office coversations with some of them every month.

    4     “I know lots of teachers who say, 'Yeah, I wish I had more time to do this,'” Kamin said, “Even in schools that can find the time, there is still some opposition (反对)because it's a departure from the way things used to be. It's a big change for some of the teachers.    5    Yet the schools that have made the change see tremendous results. So how do you move the needle?"
