Strange things were happening in Tangshan. For a few days, the water in the wells rose and fell. From the cracks in the well walls, some smelly gas came out. Mice, chickens and pigs became nervous.     1     people didn't realize that one of the deadly earthquakes was on the way.

The earthquake which destroyed the city     2    (shock) the people. At 3:42 am, everything began to shake. It seemed as if the world were coming to     3     end. In less than one minute, the city lay in ruins. Two thirds of the people died or were     4    (injure). Then, later that afternoon, another big quake shook Tangshan. However, hope was not lost. Soon after the quakes, soldiers were sent     5     (rescue) the people. They dug out those who     6    (trap) and buried the dead. More than 10,000 doctors and nurses came to provide medical care. Workers built shelters for survivors     7     homes had been destroyed.     8    (slow), the city began to breathe again.

With strong support from the government, a new Tangshan was built upon the earthquake ruins. The city has proved     9     China and the rest of the world that in times of disaster, people must unify and show the     10    (wise) to stay positive and rebuild for a brighter future.

It is known to the world that one of the most deadly     1     (earthquake) of the 20th century happened in Tangshan, China in 1976. After the earthquake, the city was completely destroyed and then completely rebuilt. Today,     2     new Tangshan has been built upon the earthquake ruins,     3     has become a symbol of the Chinese spirit of never giving up.

Last March my daughter Annie and I rescued a special two-year-old dog Teddy from a shelter. Teddy had heartworm disease (心丝虫病) and was     1     (luck) nursed back to health. It is such a long     2     (pain) process for dogs to recover     3     well worth it!

Teddy was injected (注射) twice and had to remain in a cage and became inactive. It     4     (break) Annie's heart seeing that her loving friend,     5     brought such happiness and joy to our family, had to suffer from great pain.

Many dogs are not offered     6     (protect) against heartworm and these innocent animals are seriously hurt by the disease.She thought it is incredible     7     (figure) this condition can be avoided by giving your pet one pill each month.

In an effort to develop heartworm awareness, Annie created a non-profit organization     8    (call) Wags 4 Hope. It is here where she combines her love of animals with her enthusiasm     9     painting. All the money she gets through her paintings     10    (give) to several dog shelters to help pay for the dogs' medical needs until they find their forever homes.

Amid the heights of a mountain range in southwestern China, thousands of different species of flowers     1    (mysterious) live together in harmony, without fighting as they do in other areas for the pollinators that are crucial to their continued survival. The flowers’     2    (coexist) has left scientists confused for years, but a new study may offer answers.

A team of Chinese researchers set out    3    (understand) the phenomenon better. By documenting the flowering patterns of 34 different species, they discovered that they were not blooming at the same time,     4     at different points of the season,     5    (explain) their ability to thrive (繁荣)so closely to one another.

The Hengduan Mountains are known    6     their biological diversity, spanning deep rivers to tall peaks, and their weather,     7     ranges from the subtropical humidity to cold, snowy winters. In the botanist community, however, the mountains are also spectacular because of the estimated 12, 000 species of flowers that call    8    (they) home, some 3, 500 of which aren’t found naturally anywhere else on Earth.

There are around 272 different species of rhododendrons (杜鹃) native to the Hengduan region, according to the study. Qin Li,     9     postdoctoral researcher at the Chicago Field Museum, who spent over two months visiting more than 100 sites throughout the bloom season to document their blossoms and other characteristics, once     10    (describe) the species on the mountains as an “ocean of flowers”.
