My mother is a kind and gentle woman. She is very busy from morning till night. As a teacher she works diligently (勤奋地) and efficiently. As a mother, she takes good care of us and gives us every comfort. I have an elder brother. He and I both love her dearly, as she loves us.
My mother has been teaching maths at a middle school in my hometown. She goes to the school early in the morning and does not return home until late in the afternoon. She loves her students and cares for them. She treats them with patience and teaches them well. For her excellent qualities and very good teaching results, she is always praised and respected by both her students and colleagues alike. And she has been chosen or elected as a model teacher several times.
My mother is a thrifty and industrious (勤劳的)woman. She never buys expensive or beautiful dresses for herself; she goes occasionally to buy some inexpensive and high-quality clothes for us. She never goes to big restaurants to enjoy expensive meals. She only eats a cheap meal outside when she is too busy. She lives a busy yet simple life, without any complaints. As soon as she comes back from school, she sets about doing housework; sweeping the living room and bedrooms or cleaning the furniture, and putting everything in good order. Besides, she prepares nice dishes for us to eat. She seems to be on the go all the time. As she has been very busy working hard every day, she looks older than she really is. Her face is wrinkled, and her hair has turned silver white. But she looks
as cheerful and happy as ever.
Often she says to us, “Work while you work, and play while you play.” What a good piece of advice this is! I never forget it and always keep it in my mind. This advice of hers will always serve as a guide to my action.

“Certainly!” I said, feeling proud that I was achieving my aim to raise my children to be grateful, tender-hearted and caring.
After we left the store, Tyler asked a question that would change our lives and the lives of countless others forever.
“Why were the police so happy about the doughnuts?”
I explained some people are not always friendly to police officers. Tyler was very sad to hear this, and instead of shrugging it off, he said that he was going to thank every cop in America and buy them each a doughnut!
I was shocked, but it never occurred to me to say “no”. In fact, I thought it was an excellent but unachievable idea. I suggested many other options, but nothing was enough for him on the newfound mission (使命).
I didn’t know how to put this passion into action, but I knew one thing: Tyler had found his purpose, and it was my duty to help him. I e-mailed our local office and asked if Tyler could host a thank-you event for them. They were delighted. At the event, they called Tyler “The Donut Boy”, a name that has become known throughout the nation.
Then we kept planning thank-you events and many caring people joined in. We were invited to TV stations, and flew to Washington, D.C. for National Police Week. It has been three years since a simple act of kindness sparked a wonderful idea in an eight-year-old boy,
In forty-eight states, more than 90,000 doughnuts have been delivered so far, with no end in sight. We’re made memories that will last a lifetime, but most importantly, we have served those who serve us daily and made our mark on this world.

I know you think these notes are silly. I have watched you wear a long face over the years when I give them to you. But understand that sometimes I want to tell you something and I want to get it just right. Putting it down on paper helps me do that. I wish I had been a better writer, I wish I had gone to college. If I had, I think I would have studied English and maybe my vocabulary would have improved. So many times I feel I am using the same words over and over. Like a woman wearing the same dress every day. So boring!
What I want to say to you, Charley, is you are marrying a wonderful girl. I think of Catherine in many ways like I think of Roberta. Like a daughter. She is sweet and patient. You should be the same with her, Charley.
Here is what you are going to find out about marriage: you have to work at it together* And have to love three things. You have to love
1) Each other.
2) Your children (when you have some).
3) Your marriage.
What I mean by that last one is, there may be times that you fight, and sometimes you Catherine won’t even like each other. But those are the times you have to love your marriage like a third party. Look at your wedding photos. Look at any memories you’ve made. And if believe in those memories, they will pull you back together.
I’m very proud of you today, Charley. I am putting this in your tuxedo pocket because I know how you lose things.
I love you every day!
Mom

I got a taste of that dream in 2001, when my husband arranged for me to ride in a hot air balloon for my birthday. But the experience turned out to be very dull. Around that time, I told my husband that I wanted to skydive. So when our retirement community announced that they were having an essay competition and the topic was an experience of a lifetime that you wanted to have, I decided to write about my dream.
In the essay, I wrote about my desire to skydive, stating George Brush Sr. did it at age 80. Why not me? I was just 84 and in pretty good health. A year went by and I heard nothing. But then at a community party in late April 2009, they announced that I was one of the winners. I just couldn’t believe it. Inspired by this, I decided to realize my dream, even though some of my family members and my doctor were against it.
On June 11, 2009, nearly 40 of my family and friends gathered in the area close to where I would land while I headed up in the airplane. My instructor, Jay, guided me through the experience. The plane was the noisiest one I had ever been in, but I wasn’t frightened—I was really just looking forward to the experience. When we reached 13,000 feet, Jay instructed me to throw myself out of the plane. When we first hit the air, the wind was so strong that I could hardly breathe. For a second I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?” But then everything got calmer. We were in a free fall for about a minute before Jay opened the parachute(降落伞), then we just floated downward for about five minutes. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever felt—much better than the hot air balloon. I was just enjoying it.
Skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of my life. I hope other people will look at me and realize that you don’t stop living just because you are 84 years old. If there’s something you want to experience, look into it. If it’s something that is possible, make it happen.

According to Colin Ellard, a research psychologist at Waterloo University, Canada, there is a lot of evidence which shows “the profound impact that the design of buildings has on how we feel, how we treat one another, and our overall psychological well-being”. A study from the University of Heidelberg concluded that people raised in the countryside are less likely to have mental disorders than those raised in the city. The city of Vancouver in Canada, which is surrounded by mountains and ocean, recognises the need to connect with nature. It has included protecting ocean and mountain views in its urban planning guidelines. For example, tall buildings are set up in strategic locations that don’t block scenic views for downtown residents.
The British designer Thomas Heatherwick wants to make architecture less soulless and boring. He told The Guardian, “We need to fearlessly demand interestingness and make buildings that enrich our senses.” He has listed seven characteristics of a boring building. These include being too flat and straight. He says lack of depth means light and shadow cannot play on surfaces, while straight lines are at odds with nature and make buildings dull.
However, making buildings interesting is not always easy, as architect Rafael Vinoly found out in 2013 when he created the 37-store y skyscraper in London. The building was admired for its curved exterior walls covered in reflective glass. However, it acted like a magnifying glass and reflected light which melted nearby cars and almost set fire to a carpet. A screen had to be added to prevent the building causing further damage.
So, for your own well-being, surround yourself with buildings that bring you joy, and ideally a view of nature.
1. Why are tall buildings located in certain places in Vancouver?A.To protect people’s mental health. | B.To follow the tradition of the city. |
C.To caution people against disorder. | D.To reveal the prosperity of the area. |
A.One with straight lines. | B.One having flat surfaces. |
C.One having a security system. | D.One with innovative patterns. |
A.Boldness. | B.Creativity. | C.Practicality. | D.Flexibility. |
A.To call on people to live in big cities. |
B.To compare buildings in different cities. |
C.To stress the importance of healthy emotion. |
D.To convince people of emotional impact by buildings. |

patched(打补丁)trousers and worn-out shoes made him stand out from the usual Saturday morning breakfast crowd. Unforgettable were his pale blue eyes that sparkled like diamonds, large rosy cheeks, and thin lips held in a steady smile.
He walked towards a table by the window. A young waitress watched him and ran over to him, saying,“Here, Sir. Let me give you a hand with that chair”
Without a word,he smiled and nodded a thank you. She pulled the chair away from the table. Steadying him with one arm, she helped him move in front of the chair, and get comfortably seated. Then she pushed the table up close to him,and learned his cane against the table where he could reach it.
In a soft, clear voice he said, “Thank you, Miss”
“You are welcome, Sir.” she replied,“My name is Mary. I’ll be back in a moment. If you need anything, just wave at me.”
After he had finished a hearty meal of pancakes, bacon, and hot lemon tea,Mary brought him the change, helping him up from his chair and out from behind the table. She handed him his cane, and walked with him to the front door. Holding the door open for him, she said, “Come back and see us, Sir.”
He nodded a thank you and said softly with a smile, “You are very kind!”
When Mary went to clean his table, she was shocked. Under his plate she found a business card and a note written on the napkin, under which was a 100$ bill.
