That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been. It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn't cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found. Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck(垃圾车) pull up to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice called from the inside, "Alisa Camacho?" I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eye. "Is this what you're looking for?" he asked, holding up a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I wouldn't get much sleep that night, but I had gotten my wallet back. I also had gotten back some enjoyment of city life. I realized that the city couldn't be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

Recently, we did a poetry project, and one of the activities was a partner review. I would never have taken part if it was up to me, as I prefer to work independently. But when I got involved, I found the experience had done something I thought nearly impossible—it made my poem better. My partner informed me of my mistakes and told me where I could give more details.
One of our final products of the project was to present our poem to the class. I’ve always loved public speaking, but I thought with Summit Learning I would have fewer chances to speak. I was wrong. The activities we did with a partner gave me an extra push of confidence and inspired me to do more to make my presentation the best it could possibly be.
Interactions like these are what Summit Learning is all about. This style of learning brings a positive, hard-working culture that allows you to push your limits and keep going. It creates a sense of community, since we are all working towards a similar goal.
I have always been ahead and advanced, but in a normal classroom there are limits on what you can do. With Summit Learning, I can go beyond expectations in projects or move ahead in learning new content when I’m ready. I have ownership of my work and work towards my goals.
Summit Learning has showed me how much people can grow and change. It has helped me see people and myself differently. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I cannot see myself back to a “normal” classroom.

Though impressive, they are transient(短暂的) masterpieces that disappear with the first large wave or splash of rain. However, 24-year-old Tim Bengel’s sand art is permanent. That’s because the German artist uses the grit(粗砂) to “paint” his masterpieces on canvas. While the final product is certainly beautiful, what is even more so is the way it is created.
Bengel begins by covering a blank canvas with a special adhesive(黏合剂) that dries extremely slowly, giving the artist enough time to draw the desired image. He then begins “painting” with grains of black sand and in some cases, gold foil. It takes the young man anywhere from 200 to 300 hours to complete each work of art.
What is most intriguing about Bengel’s process is that only the artist knows what the final image will be. To the rest of the world, the canvas appears to be a mess of black sand. It is only when Bengel sprinkles white sand over the canvas and then dramatically sweeps off all the excess grit that the masterpiece is revealed!
The talented artist, who is currently studying art at the University of Tubingen, says his interest in the subject began after he visited the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart Art Museum as a child. Bengel was so inspired that he came home and began trying to reproduce the paintings he had seen at the museum. After winning an art competition at this school at the age of 18, Bengel knew that it was the career he wanted to pursue. But the young man also realized that to be successful, he would have to develop his own unique style.

The artist was born into a poor Indian family of the lowest caste(社会阶层). Despite the incredibly difficult circumstances, the artist named Pradyumna Kumar Mahanandia had gained an outstanding reputation for being a gifted painter. His reputation led Charlotte Von Sledvin to travel all the way to India to get her portrait done.
By the time the portrait was finished, the two had fallen in love. Pradyumna was fascinated with Charlotte's beauty. He gave his best to capture all her beauty in the portrait, yet never fully succeeded. Nonetheless, the portrait was magnificent and Charlotte fell for his simplicity and his beautiful character. Because of him, she naturally decided to stay longer in India. The two had fallen so deeply in love that they decided to get married.
However, the time came when Charlotte had to leave again in order to complete her studies in London. Thousands of miles separated the two but their feelings for each other never changed. They stayed in contact through letters, which they exchanged almost weekly with each other. After Pradyumna had finished his studies, he had nothing but little money. All he could afford was a cheap and used bicycle. Instead of allowing the difficult circumstances to stop him from seeing his beloved wife again, he made the decision to use what he had in order to see her again. Nothing could stop him from reuniting with his wife, even if that meant an exhausting bicycle ride half around the world.
His decision was the beginning of a bicycle journey from India to the Western world. His voyage led him through eight countries and took more than four months. Sally, 42, draws a big smiley face on the back of the paper with “I love you, Rose, and we’re always going to look after you.” Then she folds it up and launches the plane back into the living room where her nine-year-old daughter is watching TV with brother Jamie, 13 and dad Rod, 40.
Jamie often makes pictures for his parents too—like the one showing a swift river with them on one side and him trapped on the other side.
It’s one of the many unusual ways that Sally and Rob have learned to communicate emotionally with their abused children in an astonishing eight-year journey of hope, healing and love.
Jamie was just four and half—sister Rose one when they were adopted by the Donovans in 2005. The youngsters had been taken from their natural mother and placed in foster care after a series of cruelty and neglect. They were left alone, hungry, and witnessed home violence on a regular basis.
Sally and Rob spent three years trying for a baby before deciding to adopt, and were well aware of the youngsters' poor background. But they were still unprepared for raising a child permanently scared by abuse or the lack of support on offer.
But now Sally has written a brilliant and heart-touching account of their family struggle in a book called “No Matter What”. Sally said: “These kids come to you with a story that what happened to them was their fault—because they are bad and unlovable. To show them they are loveable and none of it was their fault takes a lot of time. They both still say “I’m bad”. Jamie is less stuck on it now but whenever life deals him a knock, he will fall back into ‘that happened because I am stupid, I’m rubbish, I’m bad’.”
Sally’s book is humorous, heart-touching and so wildly honest that academics, charity bosses, parents and adoptees are praising it as a major contribution to child welfare work.

But thankfully, other local farmers who live in the loving west Texas community have been lending him a helping hand with his cotton crops while he is in trouble. His crops cover 1,200 acres in Floyd County, but because of his poor health, Bishop can't do hard work in the fields.
Aaron Hendricks, general manager of Floydada Co-Op Gins, has known Bishop for the last 25 years. He has seen 35 to 40 people come in to his office to help Bishop during this difficult time. Hendricks said that the farmers willingly came to help him by preparing machines and watching Bishop's farm to keep track of when the cotton would be ready to be harvested. When harvest time came, his farmer neighbors brought machines worth $ 12 million to Bishop's farm, and they started harvesting his cotton fields by 3 p.m. on the very same day.
People even came from long distances to help Bishop out, who was moved by these acts of kindness from the community. He thanked everyone who helped him out, but nobody felt the need for any thanks as they were already thankful for all Bishop had done for the community and just wanted to help him out.
They haven't stopped there either and have even started a fundraiser (募捐活动) to help Bishop stay in Dallas for the medical treatment he needs.
