I was first introduced to Puppies Behind Bars (PBB) when I watched a special on Animal Planet. This non-profit organization is the brainchild of Gloria Gilbert Stoga, a kind-hearted woman from New York PBB is a program in which specially-selected prisoners from prisons are trained in the preparation of puppies to become service dogs for the handicapped(残疾人), or police dogs to serve police forces.
My wife and I were so moved when we watched the program. It is a win-win situation at all points. First, it makes a prisoner, who may never have the chance to be released, go back to the community by joining in this program and offering every minute of every day working, loving, and training a puppy for future service. It is difficult for them, but they realize the importance of this program. In addition, most of them have the chance ( for the first time in their lives) to experience warm love through an animal.
Second, the program saves tens of thousands of dollars that it would cost to train these dogs through traditional ways. All donations to the program are used to buy dog food, training supplies, and veterinary care.
Finally, our society benefits from service dogs which can protect people from danger, search and rescue humans after a serious disaster, or become the lifeline for a handicapped person. The last of these goes far beyond the fact that dogs can open.
Fridges, answer the phone or do a dozen other daily tasks. They give a sense of freedom back to a person who has had it taken away by illness, accident, or warfare.
Because of this we have given a lot of monetary support of this meaningful program.

MEMORANDUM (备忘录) To: All members of the sales department From: Annette Derringer Re: Year-end party Date: November 26 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is just a quick note to let you all know the arrangements for next month’s year-end party. As you know, the party will be held at the Green Vale Country Club, which we have reserved between 7:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on the evening of December 21st. I’ve received replies from almost all of you confirming attendance, but if you haven’t let me know yet, please do so in the next day or two. Tickets for all employees have been covered by the company. The Green Vale manager has asked me to explain one or two things to those of you who have not been there before. Basically, there is sufficient parking space for only 100 vehicles, so they would like to ask those of you planning to drive, try to car-pool as much as possible. Also, the number of lockers available is small, so guests should try to keep belongings to a minimum. Thanks in advance, Annette |

If it is not a problem, then can you let me know how much I should pay for their tickets? Also, assuming this is OK, I was planning to drive down in a single car, to reduce the need for parking and also to allow us to keep our belongings in the car. I have a couple of days off before the party, but I’ll be in my office until the 17th, so could you get back to me before then? Thanks a lot, Kyle |

Now teachers have a problem too. They find it particularly exhausting to ask students to read complex or long texts without taking regular breaks. Smartphones have clearly affected the younger generation, but how education should evolve for digital-native students?
A common idea among teachers is that short is good. When students can’t seem to pay attention to long lectures, many teachers simply hack lessons into smaller patterns. In fact, students need time to engage with a topic once the teacher introduces it before moving on. Switching between small lessons too quickly could rob them of valuable comprehension.
There are also teachers who begin classes with meditation exercises to help their students focus. However, it turns out that any sort of “tech breaks” could counteract strong desires to multi task.
A 2018 study found that students aged between 10 and 24 tend to stay away from physical books. They prefer video as a source of information second only to teachers. Therefore, some tech-forward teachers choose platforms such as YouTube and Instagram. Asha Choksi, vice-president of global research at Pearson, gives the example of a teacher who films himself performing a science experiment and posts it to YouTube. When it is time for class, he uses the video to illustrate material in the textbook, which can seem boring to students.
Still, while those educators are embracing technology in the classroom to meet student’s needs, they also find value in traditional methods, and so suggest a “blended learning” approach. Direct instruction from them will never be replaced in their classes. Technology will be favored only when it improves a lesson in ways that are impossible offline.
Digital natives will continue to eagerly adopt new media. Teachers have no choice but to evolve. They are making an effort not only to ensure that students can take advantage of new technologies, but to teach students valuable skills that can help them think in a world constantly trying to distract them. Think of the Zuckerbergs, the Gates, the Jobs and all those pioneers in the tech world. They became successful not because they could code; it was because they could think.

Dr. Anne Gärtner from Technische Universität Dresden explains that digital teaching offers students as well as teachers new opportunities and brings a completely renewed form of teaching and learning to life: “On the one hand, the flexibility in terms of time and space in work organization is one of the greatest advantages of digital teaching, as not only time but also costs can be saved, for example, by avoiding travel. Teachers have greater autonomy (自主) and can decide for themselves how to manage their time and organize their seminars and lectures. In addition, recorded teaching material can be reused.” Students feel similarly: digital teaching allows them to learn at their own personal pace and repeat recorded lectures as often as necessary.
However, “face-to-face teaching and digital formats should not be played off against each other,” says Dr. Gärtner. “Digital teaching should be seen as a complementary (补充的) means to further improve the quality of teaching, and the importance of face-to-face teaching should not be forgotten.” Because even if online learning brings more advantages than initially expected, the lack of contact between lecturers and students leaves many gaps that cannot be “filled” online. One obvious disadvantage, for example, is the requirement of a stable Internet connection and the necessary technical equipment. Since digital teaching and its technical implementation (实施) was still unfamiliar to many, there was accordingly an increased workload, especially in the early days. In addition, one of the main disadvantages is undoubtedly the difficulty of remaining disciplined, focused and motivated in front of one's computer all by oneself over a long period.
In the future, more and more people will want to learn and teach online, since everyone now has the opportunity to continue their education anytime and anywhere—whether on the road, in the waiting room, on the train or at home.

Choosing where your child will go to their first school is a big decision and we will help you run through the education options.
When to apply
Where are the schools?
Your first step is to find the schools in your area which your child has the right to attend. If your child doesn’t have access to your preferred state primary school, there may be other schools that will accept them.
·
A good place to start is the school’s latest report. You will learn about the school’s class sizes, areas of success and failure, and so on. If a school is judged unsatisfactory in an area you regard as important, alarm bells should ring.
·Checking out schools in person
Many schools allow you to speak to the head teacher to arrange a visit. Look around carefully. See how busy the children are in their work and how happy and polite they are.
