Tips for Dealing Holiday Parties When You Have Social Anxiety

Social anxiety is more than just being shy. Someone can be so uncomfortable in a situation where he becomes panicked or frozen.     1

Practice light conversation before the event.

Participate in small conversation during low-pressure situations, such as at the coffee shop.     2    Then make an effort to only focus on your subject’s reply.

    3

Some people will choose to have a drink to calm down when they feel nervous. But if you are at a party and experience social anxiety, that’s not a good idea.
Bring a partner.

If it’s proper, ask a friend who makes you feel comfortable to go along with you to the event.       4     Offer to go to the party together so it feels like you have someone in your corner.

Write in a journal after the event.
After a holiday party, write down the good things you did at the party in a journal. Perhaps you finished the goal of saying hello to the host, or maybe you made friends with a co-worker at the office party.       5     This can help you make improvement.
A.Limit alcohol intake.
B.Think about what you’re wearing.
C.You can ask the waiter how his morning is going.

【推荐1】“There is nothing noble (高尚的) in being superior (优秀的) to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” —— Ernest Hemingway

As Hemingway says, self-improvement is a noble process.     1     Much of who we are is determined by how we relate with others around us. When we seek to improve ourselves, we can also make our relationships with others better.

2     If you have a good self-image, then others are likely to relate to you in a positive way. When people see a self-controlled and confident individual, they are likely to be affected in a positive way. And this can result in a more optimistic and constructive relationship.

Only when you have accepted who you are can you grow. If you continuously fight against yourself, you won’t have the emotional energy you need to better yourself. If you wish to get on with people better, then you may start by accepting yourself.     3

If you are on a personal path that is going upwards, then you are likely to find a friend or partner who is also seeking to better themselves and their circumstances.     4

Focusing on your good qualities and attempting to protect and improve these characteristics will help you become a better person.     5     When you stop damaging who you are, you are likely to avoid ruining relationships and this can lead to longer and more meaningful connections with others.

A.People with similar mind attract one another.
B.When you feel confident, you keep calm.
C.It will also stop you from damaging yourself.
D.The way you view yourself affects how others view you.
E.This will probably help you become a successful person.
F.People like to be around individuals who like and accept themselves.
G.It can help us learn about who we are and enable us to be better people.

【推荐2】How listen Actively

In the course of the last 20 years, I was a taker. Everything was all about me. But that has changed for me. I consistently look for ways to help others — personally and professionally.

I now focus on what the other person needs before my own needs as a way to build stronger relationships.     1

What is active listening? Active listening is an analytical exercise.    2     To make active listening more effective, you can also add complementary (互补的)skill sets. Mirroring what people have just said in your own words helps them feel heard and helps ensure your understanding is accurate. That is why active listening, not listening while doing,is essential for building better relationships with your team.

3    Learning to become an active listener requires you to slow down, have patience, and learn to ignore distractions (especially emails and texts). Techniques like reflective listening can help. If you are regularly repeating what has been said, you won’t miss any part of the conversation.    4     This helps build trust, making the speakers like you more and therefore more likely work on what you both agree on.

What will active listening do for you and your career? Active listening isn’t just about managing a team member or a conflict. Do leaders respond to the concerns and issues they hear from the staff? Do you have the skill set to actively listen and address them?    5     If you do it, you might just find your team or your organization is more adaptive than most ones.

A.Why do you want to be a listener?
B.It requires concentration on what is said.
C.How do you become a better active listener?
D.What should you do to benefit your speaker?
E.These are the questions employees are asking.
F.You also show that the speaker has your full attention.
G.I am able to do that when I stop talking and start listening.

【推荐3】Whether you get into a new school, company or group, introducing yourself is necessary. When it comes to introduction to unknown faces, you should feel comfortable and confident in doing so. Besides, you should show friendliness, so people are happy to make friends with you.     1     That’s because any wrong action will be quickly picked up by people and they might even pass incorrect judgements (判断) on you, by considering the way you present yourself at the first meeting.     2

Look into the eyes of the person, to whom you’re going to introduce yourself. This can show your confidence. During self-introduction, you should remember to wear a sweet smile on your face while shaking hands with the other person.     3     If the person doesn’t get your name, be sure to spell it. Ask for his/her name as well and repeat it when he/she says it. Always say “nice to meet you” while bringing an end to the conversation.

4     For example, don’t introduce yourself by your nickname (绰号). Don’t introduce yourself with titles, such as Mr. or Mrs., because it creates an over-confident sense in the mind of the person, along with the wrong attitude. Never look for mistakes in the person you’re meeting for the first time.     5     After all, no one wants to be judged by a stranger.

A.You’d better be careful as well.
B.Say your name clearly in a friendly manner.
C.Talk about good things and avoid anything upsetting.
D.Otherwise, he/she will lose interest in meeting you again.
E.And always talk about what you have achieved in a proper way.
F.There are some things you mustn’t do when you introduce yourself.
G.To introduce yourself in the best way, go through the following lines.
