The Getty Villa
You won’t need a passport to travel back in time at the Roman Holidays celebration this summer. Discover the sights ( and smells) of ancient Rome, offer your prayers to Venus, read your future in a sheep’s liver(肝脏), and enjoy live musical and comedy performances by the Troubadour Theater Company.

Time: 11:00 a.m.--- 3:00 p.m.
Location: The Getty Villa, 17985 Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific Palisades, California

Smelling the Rome Way
What did ancient Rome smell like? Visitors are invited to use their noses (and imaginations) to discover the good. Bad, and sweaty smells of daily life. Take a smell challenge! Be transported back in time and guess the smells familiar to most Romans, like Roman cooking materials and more.
Prayers to Venus
At this small shrine (圣地) of Venus, visitors may honor the goddess and seek her help for important moments in their lives, as Greeks and Romans did. And they are invited to write a wish to the goddess and post it near her statue.

At 11:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. , visitors are invited to the Inner Peristyle for “ Mercury in Uranus”, where the group of the actors will perform a sheep sacrifice to Mercury and examine the sheep’s liver to interpret the will of the god.

The Allendale Cultural Center has expanded its arts program to include classes for young adults. Director Leah Martin announced Monday that beginning in September, three new classes will be offered to the Allendale community. The course titles will be Yoga for Teenagers; Hip Hop Dance: Learning the Latest Moves; and Creative Journaling for Teens: Discovering the Writer Within. The latter course will not be held at the Allendale Cultural Center but instead will meet at the Allendale Public Library.
Staff member Tricia Cousins will teach the yoga and hip hop classes. Ms. Cousins is an accomplished choreographer (舞蹈教师) as well as an experienced dance educator. She has an MA in dance education from Teachers College, Columbia University, where she wrote a thesis on the pedagogical (教学法的) effectiveness of dance education. The journaling class will be taught by Betsy Milford. Ms. Milford is the head librarian at the Allendale Public Library as well as a columnist for the professional journal Library Focus.
The courses are part of the Allendale Cultural Center’s Project Teen, which was initiated by Leah Martin, Director of the Cultural Center. According to Martin, this project is a direct result of her efforts to make the center a more essential part of the Allendale community. Over the last several years, the number of people who have visited the cultural center for classes or events has steadily declined. Project Teen is primarily funded by a generous grant from The McGee Arts Foundation, an organization devoted to bringing arts programs to young adults. Martin oversees the Project Teen board, which consists of five board members. Two board members are students at Allendale’s Brookdale High School; the other three are adults with backgrounds in education and the arts.
The creative journaling class will be cosponsored by Brookdale High School, and students who complete the class will be given the opportunity to publish one of their journal entries in Pulse, Brookdale’s student literary magazine. Students who complete the hip hop class will be eligible to participate in the Allendale Review, an annual concert sponsored by the cultural center that features local actors, musicians, and dancers. All classes are scheduled to begin immediately following school dismissal, and transportation will be available from Brookdale High School to the Allendale Cultural Center and the Allendale Public Library. For more information about Project Teen, contact the cultural center’s programming office at 988-0099 or drop by the office after June 1 to pick up a fall course catalog. The office is located on the third floor of the Allendale Town Hall.

The other approach is to be a true opportunist. This will be difficult for some of you, and entirely unacceptable to others. Nonetheless (尽管如此), the travelers who get to travel the most, go to the widest variety of places, learn the most and do the most, are the opportunists. This will be true until you are so wealthy that you have no monetary (货币的, 钱的)limits.
The first time I went to Ecuador, I went there because it was cheap. If it wasn’t, I would have had a great time—somewhere else. The trip lasted a month, and cost $1045, which included airfare and even the $130 fee for a guide to take me to the top or glacier (冰川) covered Mount Chimborazo.
I cut the cost by taking a bus from my home in Michigan to Miami, and back again when I returned from Ecuador. The round-trip ticket cost $158. The round-trip flight to Quito from Miami was only $256, because it was a courier (信使, 通讯员) flight, which meant I signed for some luggage(car parts), and could only take carry-on luggage.
Never did I feel deprived, or bored. I had a great time, eating wherever it was cheap and clean, doing all sorts of inexpensive, but interesting things, and traveling across the country to climb Chimborazo. I also met and fell in love with my wife Ana.
Being an opportunist means you’ll have just as much variety, and probably almost everything you want—eventually. You just have to stop trying to get exactly what you want exactly when you want it. If the guide that took me up Chimborazo hadn’t dropped his price from $200 to $130, I would have spent $2 for a bus and gone hiking on EI Altar, another great Andean mountain. That would have left me with enough money for several other minor adventures.

Kauai, Hawaii, U. S.
Kauai is the oldest and fourth largest of Hawaiian Islands. Most of this island lies in the mist (雾 气) all year round. The thick forests are home to the colorful Hawaiian honeycreeper, an endangered bird species. Even the tiny fall or rise of the sea level will cause large changes on the island, which put the island’s ecosystem under severe stress.
Caribbean Sea
Four types of endangered sea turtles (龟) live here. The rising sea levels and the pollution of the oceans can destroy the beach, where the female sea turtles lay eggs. Unlike other animals, the sex of a sea turtle depends on the temperature at which the turtle hatches (孵化). The temperature for female sea turtles to hatch is above 31℃, and male below 27.7℃. Scientists worry the cut of male turtles can threaten the species’ survival.
Recife, Brazil
Recife in northeastern Brazil is a business center and also a great destination of tourists, who visit here for the sunny weather and white-sand beaches. Due to its nonstop coastal development, now Recife is highly weak to the threats of rising sea levels, hurricanes and storms. The reduce of coral reefs (珊瑚礁) also exposes the whole city to flooding.
