Every day I see advertisements in the newspapers and on the buses claiming that it is easy to learn English. According to them, with little effort, a student will be able to speak the language fluently in three months or even ten days. When I see advertisements like this, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. If it were that easy, I would have to look for another job, because very few qualified teachers would be needed.
It is natural for students to be attracted to methods that will teach them quickly and efficiently.
And it is no use pretending that anyone has discovered a perfect way of teaching English. Some experts even argue that there are many good methods of teaching a language. No doubt this is true to a certain extent, but it is not very helpful to students.
In my personal opinion, no one can ever learn to speak a language unless he is interested in it. Human beings, unlike animals, do not like making noises unless they understand and can relate them to their own lives. It is worth remembering that language is a means of communication.

Way back in 2012, Kyle Wiens, CEO of iFixit, wrote in a blog post for Harvard Business Review that he wouldn’t hire anyone who used poor grammar. In fact, he required all applicants to take a grammar test before moving forward.
According to Wiens, he has found that people who make fewer mistakes on a grammar test also make fewer mistakes when they are doing something completely unrelated to writing. What’s more, he believes that grammar skills indicate several other valuable traits, including learning ability, professional credibility and attention to detail.
A year later, in 2013, Grammarly reviewed 100 LinkedIn profiles (个人档案) of native English speakers and found that: Professionals with fewer grammar mistakes in their profiles earned higher positions and can get increased promotions.
So, writing well is really an essential ability that is treasured by your boss and you shouldn’t abandon.
On the other hand, writing is good for your mind and body. Writing, specifically by hand has numerous benefits for your health and well-being. For starters, it can improve your memory. When we write by hand, we have to coordinate verbal and fine movement systems. Researchers have also found that handwriting, in particular the forming of letters, is the key to not only improving your memory but also forming new ideas and learning. In fact, if you want to slow down mental aging, writing by hand is your best bet because it forces you to use more of your moving skills.
Consequently, you should improve your writing skills. The most obvious place to start is to begin writing frequently. After all, practice makes perfect. However, don’t force yourself to write daily. Instead, make this a weekly event-- allow yourself to write whatever’s on your mind.
Writing isn’t an antiquated skill best left in your school days. Written communication is—and will remain—essential.

By learning more about these roots and how they combine (结合) to create words, you will have an advantage in understanding new words, even if you’ve never seen them before.
The great thing is that you’re not learning the whole language with its grammar. You just need to memorize some parts of the vocabulary that you often see in English. So how do word roots work?
Every word has a root. This part contains the key to a word’s meaning. Take the word “happy”, for example. This word only contains the root, which means full of joy. Some words, however, have extra parts. We call these affixes (词缀), including prefixes, the part attached before the root, and suffixes, the part attached behind the root. Based on the additional meaning of the prefixes and suffixes, the meaning of the final word will be shaped to mean something new.
Take the word “autobiography” for example. The root is “bio”, meaning life. You may have noticed that many words with “bio” have something to do with life or living beings—biology, biography, and so on. When the suffixes “graph”, meaning to write, is added to it, it means a story about someone’s or something’s life. “Auto” means by oneself. Altogether, an “autobiography” is a story about a person’s life, written by the person himself or herself.
In a word, a better grasp of word roots can make you understand the English language better, and will help you with your vocabulary recognition and memory skills.
