In 2011,Amy Chua put out the book,Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, which is her memoir(回忆录)about the challenges of being a parent and trying to keep to the strict upbringing(养)she knew as a child. Controversy over the book arose because many readers did not get the impression that Chua was trying to be humorous about her parenting methods. There was also miscommunication about the purpose of the book. Many received it as a guide for other parents on how to use strict methods to punish and motivate their children. However,Chua has always claimed the aim of her book was only to share her successes and failures as a parent in a culturally diverse world.
In the book,Chua compares Western and Chinese beliefs and methods of parenting. In general,Chinese parents believe a child's academic success is directly linked to parenting skills. It is common for such parents to take severe measures to make their children do exactly what they say. In contrast,Western parents worry more about their children's self-esteem(自尊),which drives their parenting methods. As a result, parenting methods have become less strict and children are not held to the high standards they were in the past.
Interestingly,in the West, many people agree that Western parenting methods could use improvement. Some even say that the laid-back Western methods can be just as damaging as the overly strict ones Chua connects with Chinese culture because more and more children are not learning how to face and overcome challenges. However, experts also say that being too strict with children can cause rebellion(反叛),low self-esteem and poor parent-child relationships.
What everyone can agree on is that there is no perfect way to parent. What's more a method that works with one child will not necessarily work with another. Parents are challenged with finding the best method that helps each child learn to be a responsible and confident person.

Sometimes it involves spelling, specifically the American reforms that made British centre into American center. Realistic change or dumbing down? And, of course, the quickest way to tell a Yank from a Brit is by pronunciation.
But the differences between British English (BE) and American English (AE) go beyond words, sounds and spelling to grammar itself. Here they can be not very obvious, but they are many: the index(索引) of the “Cambridge Grammar of the English Language” mentions regional differences in 95 places. Most people assume that any variations between the two countries result from American innovation(创新), to the horror of Britons. In reality, America has often been the conservative one, and Britain the innovator. When British speakers borrow American habits, they are sometimes unintentionally readopting an older version of their language.
Take the past participle of get, which in Britain is got and in America gotten. To some Britons, American gotten is a cute or annoying invention. In fact, it is the older form, which came from Old Norse. “Gotten” appears in a Bible translation of 1535: “Treasures that are badly gotten, profit nothing.” It was used for centuries before being combined with the past tense, got, in Britain. Not that America was entirely conservative; it has a got too. But Americans use it differently: “He's got a car” means he owns one, while “He's gotten a car” means he has acquired one.
Americans have indeed innovated extensively with English, as with other things. But language never sits still: the British variety itself went on changing after 1776, as all living languages must. Americans, for their part, eagerly import fashionable British slang(俚语). Instead of complaining about Americanisms, British observers could say thanks to the old colonies (殖民地) for keeping traditional English safe.

Now a new TV series called The Crown, which started to air on Nov 4 in the US, is looking back at the time when Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ of the UK prepared to take the throne(王位)at a 25-year-old. She would face a series of challenges after she was crowned(加冕)following the unexpected death of her father, George VI, in 1952.
Ever since she took the throne, the queen has seen her country change dramatically. Yet she has remained a constant presence in British lives. How can a queen, a memory from long ago in most parts of the world, still be so popular in modern Britain.
One answer is that the royal(王室的)family knows how to move with the times. Once upon a time, kings, queens, princes and princesses were distant from everyone. Today, while they still have some of the old mystery, the royals are true celebrities(名人)like famous sports and pop stars. Indeed, they are upper-class celebrities. There are hundreds of Hollywood actors, but there is only one queen of the UK.
Because they are seen so much—in magazines, on TV and on the internet—the royals must now be careful. It is not enough to be famous; one must “deserve” this fame. That’s why the new, younger generations of royals are so important to the royals’ chances of surviving. Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton’s commitment to many good causes has also given the royal family an image it highly needs.
In addition, old-fashioned British eccentricity(古怪)explains why the royals have stayed for so song. “The British monarchy is valued because it is the British monarchy,” the BBC noted. “We are an old and complicated society.”
1. What can we learn about Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ from the two paragraphs?A.She was 25 years old when she became queen in 1952. |

Grant Wood’s American Gothic caused a stir (轰动)in 1930 when it was exhibited for the first time at the Art Institute of Chicago and awarded a prize of 300 dollars. Newspapers across the country carried the story, and the painting of a farmer and a younger woman posed before a white house brought the artist instant fame.
In 1930, Grant Wood, an American painter with European training, noticed a small white house built in the small southern Iowa town of Eldon. Wood was so fascinated by it that he decided to paint the house along with the kind of people he thought should live in that house. In the painting, the farmer is modeled on his dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby. His younger sister Nan served as a model for the woman (imagined to be the farmer’s wife or daughter). Wood wanted to give a description of the traditional roles of men and women as the man is holding a pitchfork symbolizing hard labor. Each element was painted separately; the models sat separately and never stood in front of the house. The Gothic style of the house inspired the painting’s title.
American Gothic remains one of the most famous paintings in the history of American art. The painting has become part of American popular culture. Some believe that Wood used it to satirize (讽刺)the narrow-mindedness that has been said to characterize Midwestern culture. The painting may also be read as a praise of the moral virtue or rural America or even as a mixture of praise and satire. American Gothic is one of the few images to reach the status of cultural symbol, along with Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

The day she got the call telling her she won the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, Alice was sick on the bed.
Caitriona Lally said, “I understand that my choice of job is an unusual one for a writer, and that’s what has attracted media interest. But as long as my story is told accurately, I’m OK with it. The only thing I’m worried about in the report is any suggestion that my life is tougher than it actually is, or that I’m inspiring because I work a cleaning job. But the fact is that I have a partner who works full time, which allows me to clean part-time, write part-time, and be at home with our daughter most of the week. There are people who have to work two or three jobs who don’t get to see their children as often as they like. I’ve also had the chance of going to university and I’ve been able to choose a physical job.”
After graduating in 2004 from Trinity College Dublin, Lally worked as an English teacher in Japan for a year and then traveled a lot. Popular British author, Charles Dickens’(1812-1870) family could hardly make ends meet (入不敷出). They could only afford to send one of their six children to school.
Dickens was not that child.
His parents chose to send a daughter, who had a talent for music, to an academy. Then at the age of 12, Dickens’ life took another turn for the worse.
His father, a clerk, was placed in prison for unpaid debts. And, being the oldest male left at home, Dickens took up work at a factory. His horrible experience there became the fuel for his future writing.
His father was freed three months later and inherited(继承) a small amount of money. Dickens was then sent to school.
From 1836 to 1837, he wrote a monthly series of stories. Thus the “Pickwick Papers”(《匹克威克外传》), came into being, which brought fame to the 23-year-old man.
Throughout his career, Dickens covers various situations in his novels. He wrote about the miserable lives of the poor in “Oliver Twist”(《雾都孤儿》), the French Revolution in “Tale of Two Cities”, and social reform in “Hard Times” (《艰难时世》). He also wrote “David Copperfield” (《大卫·科波菲尔》), a book thought to be based on his own life.
“I do not write bitterly or angrily: for I know all these things have worked together to make me what I am,” he once said.
His difficult childhood did indeed shape the person he became, as well as his writing career. There are shades of young Dickens in many of his most beloved characters, including David Copperfield and Oliver Twist.
Like the author, all these characters come from poor beginnings and are able to rise above their setbacks and achieve success.
“Minds, like bodies, will often fall into an ill-conditioned state from too much comfort,” he once wrote.
On June 9th, 1870, aged 58, Dickens died, leaving one unfinished work. The words on his tombstone read: “He was a sympathizer(同情者) to the poor, the suffering and the oppressed (受压迫者), and by his death, one of England’s greatest writers is lost to the world.”

A study revealed that we spend about 218 minutes procrastinating every day, which amounts to 55 days of lost time each year. We might not think these figures particularly worthy of worry, but when we look at the overall impact of procrastination on our lives,
So why do we do it? “When we avoid taking action, we’re really avoiding pain,” explains psychiatrist (精神病学家) Phil Stutz. For most of us, pain avoidance isn’t limited to one situation. It applies to almost anything that’s painful. Most of us try our best never to leave a comfort zone. That’s why we sacrifice something much more valuable: time. “Our time on earth is limited,” Stutz adds. “Every moment is an opportunity we’ll never have again. Procrastinators act as if they have all the time in the world. But deep down, they know they’re wasting parts of their life. The trouble is, most of them don’t know how to free themselves.”
One way he says we can reach this level of freedom is by overcoming the pain of avoidance using daily visualization (想象). “Picture the pain you’re avoiding as a black cloud in front of you,” Stutz says. “Notice how you’re fed up with the ways this pain has held you back in life, and tell yourself that you’re determined to conquer it. Then it’s time to get through the cloud and to the other side — where you’re free.” It is obvious that this tool works when we want to procrastinate. We then get into the habit of moving “towards” pain instead of away from it.
In addition to the fact that procrastinators suffer more health problems, procrastination also destroysteamwork and personal relationships because it shifts the burden of responsibilities onto others. So next time you think about putting something off, remember the impact it will have. Experts insist: procrastinators can change their behavior, it takes a lot of self-work but in the end, it’s worth the effort. And start today, not tomorrow.

Most people decide one day that they need to make changes to their lives and then they go all out to make big sweeping changes. This may work for them for the first few days, but then they get burned out.
This approach can work for just about anything. If you are exercising for half an hour every day and you want to increase that time to one hour then add a minute every day. After one month you will have reached your goal with very little resistance from your body and mind.
This method of change is gentle, but very powerful. Think of everything you can accomplish if you just continuously improve a little at a time. The change itself creates the momentum (动力) you need to keep going.
A.The key is to change a little bit at a time. |
B.Keeping on exercising can build up strength. |
C.It may take longer, but with this approach you are likely to succeed. |
D.Nothing will happen if you are not determined to achieve your goal. |

My youngest knows the rules: You have to tell us where you will be at all times, and if the plans change, you have to ask before you participate. I’ve drilled this into his head over and over because I’m that anxious mom, the one that worries, the one who is afraid her kids are going to get into a bad situation if she doesn’t repeatedly remind them to make the right choices and follow the rules.
Parents can constantly tell their kids to follow the rules, act politely and do things the “right” way. We can teach them the lessons and hope they follow our advice. But the truth is, even though your child can hear your voice in their ear while they are getting ready to stick their big toe into something that they know would make your head spin, it might not be enough to stop the them.
There are times when they need to experience feeling scared, uneasy or guilty in order to learn and keep them from repeating the same mistake over and over again. It’s one of the scariest realizations I’ve had as a parent, but after living with three teens for a few years it’s my truth-and it’s the truth of every other parent of a teenager.
Looking back upon my young life, I know nothing really sank in unless I experienced it for myself, like when I stopped eating chocolate late at night and found I was finally able to sleep at night. It took me long to stop damaging my own sleep even though not eating the chocolate was the simple solution. And I am not a stubborn teen.
I’ve realized the importance of stepping back (just a bit), and letting my teens navigate (寻找) their own way. It’s made all the difference.
