Mary Santiago has that secret dream, too. Her story is featured in Another Cinderella Story, a film set in a US high school.

Mary is shy but loves to dance. Compared with other girls, she is invisible. However, her world changes completely when a famous teenage pop singer, Joey Parker, appears.

Joey is everything the rest of the boys in her class are not—kind, handsome and desirable. Mary and Joey’s paths cross at a ball. They meet and fall in love with each other. But when Mary has to rush back home, she leaves behind her MP3 player, which becomes the only clue Joey has to find the girl of his dreams. Of course, there is a wicked (邪恶的) stepmother, who turns out to be Dominique Blatt and she takes in Mary after her dancer mother dies. Dominique treats Mary like a maid and does everything she can to make sure Mary doesn’t get into the top dance school. Her two daughters are equally determined to stop Joey falling for Mary, even if that means embarrassing her.

The story, though it mostly follows Cinderella, does add a few modern day twists to the classic fairy tale. Refreshingly, the film, unlike many high school films, does not focus on looks, although the actors are all beautiful. There is also a lot less materialism in Another Cinderella Story than in many similar movies.

【推荐1】Vietnam aims to solve the relations between economic development and cultural preservation. Vietnamese cultural departments and activists have tried to preserve the historical and cultural relics in the country.

Vietnam now has more than 40,000 historical relics. These relics of various forms and history are treasures for future generations.

However, hundreds of relics are severely damaged due to the negative influence of time, war and human activities. Head of Hanoi Relics Management Board, Nguyen Doan Tuan, says rescue work must preserve the relics’soul: “We cannot replace ruined construction with new materials. We must preserve its shape, size and style. We need to pay attention to every brick replaced so that it looks exactly like the original.”

Most relics have to rely on tourist fees for repair and rescue work. Director of Van Mieu Cultural and Science Center, Dang Kim Ngoc, says that the relics must be promoted widely to attract more visitors and bring in more income for repair and preservation: “We provide constant guide services for visitors so that they understand more about our relics. At the same time, a natural surrounding of the relic has been ensured, including the grass field and garden to improve its scenic value.”

The local government agreed that the relics must be turned to the community for shared efforts in the preservation work. Director of Vietnam Revolution Museum Dang Quoc Quan, said that the community must be guided in the preservation and protection, “The UNESCO aims to let local community take part in the preservation of relics. We have seen limitations in the preservation of relics, especially festival-related groups of buildings. This requires management and guidance by the government.”

Nguyen Thi Minh Ly from the Department of Heritage says the community should be guided in proper behaviors towards relics: “This will ensure the protection of cultural relics in later generations Creative restoration (修复) must be based on previous(先前的) values.”

The 24-year-old is a University of Sussex graduate whose school project in product design led to a brilliant invention. Lucy Hughes initially intended to figure out how to either reduce fish waste produced by the fishing industry or to turn it into something useful. What she came up with not only does both,but offers up a great alternative to single-use plastics.

While Lucy was studying various waste streams at a fish processing plant in England, the fish skins and scales she touched felt surprisingly flexible and strong, which gave her a new idea. She began playing around in her kitchen with different combinations of fish waste and red algae(海藻). After more than 100 experiments, she knew she struck gold. She created MarinaTex, a stronger bio-plastic material that takes just four to six weeks to break down. It’s even fit to be eaten! And according to Lucy, just one Atlantic cod-a type of fish-can produce 1,400 MarinaTex bags. In 2019,Lucy was named the James Dyson Award UK winner for her invention, which she hopes to eventually produce in much larger quantity. She’ll be using her prize money for further MarinaTex research and development.

Globally,320 million tones of plastic gets produced each year-a figure that’s set to double by 2034, according to Surfers Against Sewage. Yet 90.5% of all plastic has never been recycled. That means that a lot of plastic gets burnt-creating greenhouse gases that then may warm the planet, causing climate change-or sent to landfill, and eventually, some plastic reaches the oceans, harming sea creatures that often consume the materials by accident, and even end up back in the human food chain too. Now MarinaTex could be used to settle the problems.

【推荐1】How I failed my Oxford interview

As soon as the words left my mouth, I knew I’d made a mistake. “You think Jane Austen is… soft?” the man opposite me asked in disbelief. Then, he and his colleague took turns to challenge my claim, finishing each others sentences as they stressed that Austen’s novels were, in fact, savage.

“I just mean …” I said in a bright voice, trying to keep the tone light, “that she’s not as biting as Virginia Woolf.”

The two professors this idea around, too, like a couple of cats toying with a frightened bird — giving specific examples of how Austen’s work was, on the contrary, more biting than Woolf’s. With no more defensive action to take. I simply smiled and said, “Let’s just agree to disagree, shall we?” And at that moment, my dreams of going to Oxford University disappeared in a puff of smoke.

Part of my problem was a lack of confidence. Even though I was a straight A student and had prepared for the interview to the best of my ability. I wasn’t a skilled debater. When faced with two experts who told me that I was wrong, instead of defending myself. I rolled over and accepted defeat.

To pass the interview, you need more than confidence, of course. You also need a burning passion for your subject, not just a keen interest. In other words, don’t put comments on your personal statement that you’re not prepared to back up in person.

So, months later, I already knew the contents of my thin envelop when it appeared on my doormat. Naturally, I felt a pang of disappointment. I had wanted to go to Oxford since I was 13. I used to look up images of my favorite college with the same eagerness of a bride-to-be browsing wedding dresses.

Ultimately, I didn’t have what it took — but, looking back, that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Instead of going to Oxford, I found a university that was a better fit for my interests. I loved my eclectic (兼收并蓄的) course, where I could write an essay comparing Jane Eyre to 50 Shades of Grey.

Failing my Oxford interview also provided a valuable life lesson. I’m not more confident in my opinions, more passionate when it comes to debate, and I try to back up my point with hard evidence. What’s more. I have never since ended a discussion by giving a foolish smile and saying, “Let’s just agree to disagree, shall we?”

Self-esteem is, very simply, the set of feelings you have about yourself. It’s developed by your experiences, thoughts, feelings, and relationships.

Unlike self-knowledge, which refers to how much you know about yourself, the core of self-esteem is formed around whether you like yourself or not.

Depression is much more than just feeling sad. It consume your energy, makes everyday activities difficult and interferes with your eating and sleeping patterns. Psychotherapy and/or medication are highly effective in treating depression.

There are several types of depressive disorders, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, psychotic depression, postpartum depression, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Clinicians use low self-esteem as one possible symptom when they diagnose the psychiatric condition of major depressive disorder. They don’t necessarily care whether low self-esteem causes the depression or vice versa.

However, personality researchers have long wondered about the chicken-and-egg problem of self-esteem and depression. Certainly, if you dislike yourself, you’ll be more likely to be depressed. Conversely, if you’re depressed, you’ll be more likely to feel bad about who you are as a person.

The only way to disentangle the highly related concepts of self-esteem and depression is through longitudinal research, in which people are followed up over time. A study on depression, conducted by University of Basel researchers Julia Sowislo and Ulrich Orth, contrasted the competing directions of self-esteem to depression vs depression to self-esteem.

The findings almost all overwhelmingly support the vulnerability model of self-esteem and depression. Over time, low self-esteem is a risk factor for depression, regardless of who is tested and how. The study indicated that low self-esteem causes depression but not vice versa.

Therefore, if a person has low self-esteem, there’s an increased risk of developing depression. This is a very important discovery because it shows that improving a person’s self-esteem can make him or her feel better.

He cuts hair by day, but in the evenings, after taking his daughter home from school, he goes to his second job as a police officer. “All the kids know they can come to me for anything,Smith says. “ A lot of parents bring their kids to me for haircuts because I'm a police officer. They trust our work in the barber shop. ”
