The first men and women came to Britain over two and a half million years ago.     1     But the British Isles only became islands separated from the rest of Europe about 8, 500 years ago, when melting ice formed the English Channel!

3,000 years after Britain became an island, new tribes who came by boat from the mainland introduced farming.    2    Many of these man-made hills can still be seen.

Later on, people learned to build stone monuments. The most amazing is Stonehenge, a circle of huge stones begun about 4,500 years ago. Stonehenge is the world's most famous prehistoric monument.     3

3,000 years ago the climate in Britain became colder and wetter than before.     4     A bit later iron started to be used for tools and weapons instead of bronze. Knowledge of ironworking may have been brought by the Celts, a new wave of immigrants who started to arrive from southern Europe in about 500 BC.

What we know about the first people in Britain has been worked out by archaeologists from the remains they left behind them. Pytheas, a Greek, was the first person who could read and write to come to Britain. His visit was in about 330 BC, over 2, 000 years after Stonehenge was begun. Unfortunately, what Pytheas wrote has been lost, so we don't have any written record of Britain until the Romans came.     5

A.That was almost 300 years after he did!
B.As a result, people had to move down from high ground.
C.Because of the climate change, much of the ice has melted.
D.Many archaeologists believe that Britain was once covered by ice.
E.These tribes built earthworks for protection and as tombs for their dead bodies.
F.They were hunters and gatherers of food, who used stone tools and weapons.
G.We don't know what it was used for, though many different suggestions have been made.

1】Have you ever wondered how your favorite NBA team received its famous name? All NBA teams have an interesting story or a history behind their names. Some of the names reflected the city’s culture or history, some came from previous owners and many were selected through “Name the Team” contests.

For teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and the Utah Jazz, the names were not always a reflection of the city. Even though Los Angeles has few lakes, the Lakers name has been a city treasure for many years. Before going to Los Angeles, the team originated in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1947, team officials changed the name to the Lakers to reflect the Minnesota’s nickname, “Land of 10,000 Lakes”. The team name went unchanged after moving to Los Angeles in 1960.

Because the Utah’s team originated in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was called the Utah Jazz. In 1974, New Orleans club officials chose the name to represent the city for its reputation as the “Jazz Capital of the World”. The name stayed with the team even after they found a new home in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1979.

The original owner of the Chicago Bulls, Richard Klein, named the team the Bulls. He picked the name because a fighting bull is relentless and never quits. Klein, who founded the club in 1966, believed these qualities were necessary for a championship team and hoped his Chicago athletes would live up to the team name. The Bulls, the winner of the six NBA championships, has definitely followed the belief.

In 1967, the Indiana Pacers selected their team name in a different way from most other teams. Their decision was based on what they wanted to accomplish in the NBA. Team officials chose the Pacers name because the organization wanted to set the “pace” in professional basketball.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了伟大的Giza金字塔,介绍了其建造的时间、构成、以及存在的意义等。

【推荐2】The Giza Pyramids (金字塔), built to last forever, have done just that. The tombs could date back to Egypt’s Old Kingdom and were constructed some 4,500 years ago. Egypt’s pharaohs (法老)expected to become gods in the afterlife. To prepare for the next world they built temples to the gods and massive pyramid tombs for themselves, which were filled with all the things each ruler would need to guide and support himself in the next world.

The ancient wonders at Giza were so impressive that even today scientists can’t be sure how the pyramids were built. Yet they have learned much about the people who built them. The builders were skilled, well-fed Egyptian workers who lived in a nearby city. Archaeological (考古的)digs on the attractive site have shown a highly organized community, rich with resources.

If the Pyramids helped to build ancient Egypt, they also preserved it. Giza allows us to explore an ancient world. “Many people think of the site as just a tomb in the modern sense, but it’s a lot more than that,” says Peter Der Manuelian with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. “In these decorated tombs you have wonderful scenes of every aspect of life in ancient Egypt—so it’s not just about how Egyptians died but how they lived.”

Tomb art displays ancient farmers working on their fields and fishing. Words and texts also allow research into Egyptian grammar and language. “Almost any subject you want to study about the culture is available on the tomb walls at Giza,” Der Manuelian says.

To help make these precious resources accessible to all, Der Manuelian heads the Giza Project, an enormous collection of Giza photographs, plans, drawings, object records, and diaries that enables online visits to the site.

【推荐3】The Iroquois lived in the northeastern great lakes region of North America in the 16th century. Back then, their lives depended on the natural resources of the forests, especially the birch tree(桦树), which was everywhere in that area. The birch tree has white bark, and this tough protective outer layer of the tree is waterproof, which made it useful for making things like cooking containers and a variety of other tools.

The Iroquois would cut the bark and fold it into any shape they needed. The most important use of the bark, by far, was the canoe. Since the northeastern region of North America is interconnected by many streams and waterways, water transportation by canoe was essential. The canoes allowed these people to travel over a vast area that today would take a few hours to fly over. The Iroquois made canoes of all types, for travel on small streams or on large open ocean waters. They could travel throughout the area, only having to portage(转陆路运输)occasionally. Since the canoes were so light, carrying them over land to another nearby stream wasn't difficult task.

Having an efficient means of transportation helped the Iroquois to form a federation(联盟)linked by natural waterways. This efficiency of the birch bark canoe also made an impression on newcomers to the area. French traders in the 17th century adopted the design of the birch bark canoe, and they found they could travel more than 1,500 kilometers a month.

Besides the bark, the Iroquois also used the wood of the birch tree. The young trees were used as supports for houses. Branches were folded into snow shoes. And the Iroquois were all good at running very fast over the snow in these birch branch snow shoes. If you ever tried walking in snow shoes, you would know it wasn't easy.

1. What do we know about the birch bark?
A.It can be eaten.B.It is easy to bend.
C.It is heavy in weight.D.It can be used as supports for houses.
2. Why does the author compare canoe travel and flight travel in Paragraph2?
A.To show how far canoes could travel.
B.To show how fast canoe travel was.
C.To present how waterways have changed over time.
D.To describe how technology has changed our way of travel.
3. Why were canoes important to the Iroquois?
A.Snowy winters made land travel too difficult.
B.There was a network of waterways in their living area.
C.They could sell canoes to other Native American groups.
D.Canoe travel helped them form relationships with foreigners.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Different kinds of trees used for building canoes.
B.Various methods of Native American transportation.
C.The trading of birch products by Europeans in the 17th century
D.The value of birch trees to a Native American group.
