Millions of people are familiar with if -snoring(打鼾). The number one annoyance in the bedroom at night. About one i two men and one in four women of middle age or older snores in their sleep. Previously dismissed as just an annoying disturbance of the peace, snoring is now recognized as a serious sleep and health disorder. These nightly problems in sleep can even be life-threatening!
When snoring, loud breathing noises occur in the upper airways during sleep, as loud as a passing truck. That' s the sound many people fall asleep to, Men over 50 years old, especially snore. As many as 60 to 80 Percent in this age group are affected.
Now there's a revolutionary helper that immediately improves nasal( 鼻的)breathing and can thereby prevent snoring. It is called the SilentSnore, and its the first small and easy-to-use device for combating bothersome snoring noises. Tens of thousands of people have already used this little wonder to sleep better and more peacefully at night. And indeed-snoring can easily be combated with this method!
The SilentSnore gently widens the nostril(鼻孔) to reduce respiratory(呼吸系统) resistance in the nose in other words, air can flow better into the lungs through the nose. As soon as the body registers that nasal breathing is working without restriction again, it unconsciously switches to (much healthier)nasal breathing. In contrast to things like chinstraps, SilentSnore does not disturb you while you sleep.
This ingenious little device controls snoring when sleeping without interfering the normal sleep cycle. A normal and healthy sleep cycle should include at least 25% at deep sleep, by relieving snoring effectively, stop disturbing your sleeping partner immediately, and/ guarantee your body rest and regenerate well. You can place your order online through the official website in China. Your SilentSnore will be delivered to your doorstep.

If you grab a bite before your flight, you probably have an idea of what it will taste like. But once you’re in the air, your sense of taste isn’t the same as it is on the ground. A lot of factors on the plane are all coming together to suppress your sense of smell, which makes up a large portion of our sense of taste.
Let’s start with the cabin, which is extremely dry. The dry cabin dries out your nasal(鼻的) passages, which means your taste buds become less perceptive. But that’s not the only part of cabin suppressing your sense of taste. The low cabin pressure actually decreases the levels of oxygen in your blood, which means your olfactory receptors, the part of your nervous system that responds to smells, become less sensitive, which actually weakens your sense of smell.
But it’s not just the environment inside the cabin that’s affecting your senses. The noise coming from the engine isn’t helping, either. A 2010 study tested people’s sense of taste both inside and outside a simulated plane cabin. The researchers found sensitivity to sweet and salty food was reduced by 30% while in the cabin. And that weakened sense of taste can cause a lot of problems for airline caterers, who have to modify every recipe to account for it.
To top it off, not every flavor is affected equally. Some ingredients, like curry and lemongrass, actually become more intense in the sky, while cinnamon, ginger, and garlic tend to maintain their taste.
Some airlines will use naturally intense flavors, like certain fruit and vegetable oils and concentrates, which helps to lessen the amount of extra salt a recipe might need.
1. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a factor for our change of taste on planes?A.Dry cabin environment. | B.A large number of sensitive receptors on the tongue. |
C.A low level of oxygen in our blood. | D.The noise from the plane. |

Now, the city is asking the Nevada state legislature (立法机构) to ban useless grass. It is trying to become the first place in America to ban that kind of grass often seen between streets, in housing developments and in office parks.
It is estimated (估计) that useless grass makes up 40% of all the grass in Las Vegas and it needs a lot of water to survive. Grass needs four times more water than dry climate plants like cactus. By tearing out the grass, the city could reduce yearly water usage by 15%.
In 2003, the Southern Nevada Water Authority banned developers from planting grass in front of new homes. It also offered homeowners $30 for each square meter of grass they tear out. But fewer people are now using the program. Water usage has increased in southern Nevada by 9% since 2019. And last year, Las Vegas set a record of 240 days without major rainfall. The Colorado River provides much of Nevada’s drinking water. The river could lose more water as climate change affects it.
Water officials (官员) in other dry cities said water usage needs to be reduced. But they fear the reaction to reforms like the ones in Las Vegas if their communities do not accept them. Cynthia Campbell is the water resources adviser for the city of Phoenix in Arizona. “There might come a point whencity restrictions(限制) get too severe (苛刻的) for some residents (居民). They’ll say that is the point of no return for them,” Campbell said. “For some people, it’s a pool. For some people, it’s grass.”
1. Why does Las Vegas city try to ban useless grass?A.To protect the local people. | B.To beautify the city. |
C.To reduce water usage. | D.To reduce waste. |
A.Allowing planting grass before new houses. |
B.Encouraging the residents to tear out grass. |
C.Praising those who don’t sign on the program. |

Being frightened can be good for you. Think about your favorite scary books or movies. You are scared but you just can't resist reading or watching them. Being frightened makes your brain flood with healthy chemical substances that excite your mood and release feelings of great excitement.
When you are frightened, your body also produces a chemical called oxytocin, which helps people bond with one another. So, if you're at a haunted(闹鬼的) house with some pals, that experience can help solidify your friendship. "Watch people walking out of a haunted house, and you'll see lots of smiles and high fives." says Dr.Marge Kerr, a sociologist who studies fear.
There is also some evidence that being scared can help a person manage stressful situations. Things like a presentation in front of your class or performing in a school play can make us fearful and anxious. But these experiences help build a sort of endurance to fear that makes us more confident. "You become more comfortable with the physical experience of fear, and so you're better able to work through it during these situations."Kerr explains.
Though some haunting may be healthy, it's important to remember that people experience fear in different ways. What may be fun for one person could be too scary for another. And Kerr notes that kids younger than six or seven can't separate reality and make-believe, so seeing something frightening could have lasting, negative effects.
1. Why does the author mention"Halloween"in Paragraph 1?A.To make a suggestion. | B.To introduce a topic. |
C.To offer an instruction. | D.To present a report. |

Meller is overseeing the building of all her parts by engineers at Engineered Arts, a company based in Cornwall, England. The engineers believe the robot will be able to make pictures of people from sight with a writing instrument in her hand. Meller wants the robot to perform like a human artist.
He spoke to the Reuters news agency after seeing Ai-Da’s head being carefully brought to life by specialists who were connecting individual hairs to form eyebrows. He said, “She’s going to actually be drawing and we’re hoping to then build technology for her to paint.” But also as a performing artist, “she’ll be able to engage with audiences and actually get messages across, asking those questions about technology today,” he added.
Ai-Da’s skeletal robotic head may still be separate from her body, but her movements are very alive. Cameras in each of her eyeballs recognize human body parts. Ai-Da will make eye contact and follow you around the room, opening and closing her mouth as you do. If you get too close, the robot will back away, closing and then opening her eyes as if in shock.
The specialists are using the company’s Mesmer lifelike robot technology to create her head. Once finished, Ai-Da will have a mixed-race appearance, with long dark hair and rubber-like skin made from silicone. The teeth and skin inside her mouth will come from a 3-D printer. Marcus Hold works at Engineered Arts. He said “Mesmer brings together the development of software mechanics and electronics to produce a lifelike face with lifelike gestures in a small human sized package.”
Ai-Da will make her first public appearance at an exhibit called “Unsecured Futures” at the University of Oxford. Some of her pictures are expected to appear at another show in London later this year.

He was treated with anti-retroviral drugs until about 18 months ago. Now, tests show he was no sign of the HIV virus in his blood.
“There is no virus there that we can measure. We can’t detect anything,” said Ravindra Gupta, a professor and HIV scientist who played a leading role in treating the man. The patient’s name, nationality or age is not public. He is called “the London patient” because he was treated in the British capital. A similar identification was given to the first known person cleared of HIV infection over ten years ago, the “Berlin patient”. Both men experienced a similar treatment.
But there was something unusual about the person who gave the London patient stem cells. The giver or donor had a natural resistance to HIV. In other words, something about this person’s body made it impossible for him or her to become infected with the HIV virus. As a result, when the London patient received the stem cells, his immune system changed and he developed a natural resistance to HIV, too.
Ravindra Gupta notes that the donor’s unusual resistance to HIV may not be the only reason the treatment cleared the London patient’s infection. He notes that the Berlin patient and the London patient had similar side effects after the treatment. In both cases, the donors’ stem cells immediately began to attack the patients’ immune cells. This interaction may have helped destroy some of the HIV infection in the patients, Gupta says.
Experts who study AIDS say the success of the Berlin patient and the London patient is very important. Their experiences show that scientists will one day be able to end AIDS. But they also warn that a cure has not been found. The blood treatments the Berlin and London patients had have failed in other patients. The treatments are also too dangerous, expensive and risky to do for the large number of people who already have the virus that causes AIDS.
1. According to the example of the two patients, we can learn that HIV virus _______.A.shows no sign in people’s blood | B.is certain to lead to the disease AIDS |

There is a long tradition. When gold was first discovered and people came from around the world to find their fortune, many could not afford to stay in a hotel and nor would there have been enough, so they all brought tents (帐篷)and set them up next to their little goldfield. Many people alive in Australia today are born from those people who spent large parts of their lives intents. And it seems to have stayed with us all the way to modern Australia.
In summer, the nation's camping grounds are packed(挤满)with families on holidays. It is a great experience for a kid to lie in a tent where he or she can hear all the sounds of nature. It's a place where they can learn skills like making a fire, cooking and swimming in the water, which they will use for their whole lives.
Of course, things have changed a lot from the early days of camping, when you would carry everything you need on your back. Now there are all kinds of equipment to take with you, from solar panels(太阳能板)for your electric razor(电动剃须刀)to an outdoor shower. In fact, many campsites you see around the country are so decorated that you have to wonder why they are bothered to leave the house at all.

Like most English children I learned French at school and I had often been to France, so I was used to speaking a foreign language to people who didn’t understand English. But when I went to America I was really looking forward to having a nice easy holiday without any language problems.
How wrong I was! The misunderstanding began at the airport. I was looking for a public telephone to give my American friend Danny a ring and tell her that I had arrived. A friendly old man saw me looking like being lost and asked if he could help me.
“Yes,” I said. “I want to give my friend a ring.”
“Well, that’s nice,” he said. “Are you getting married? But aren’t you a bit young?”
“Who is talking about marriage?” I replied. “I just want to give my friend a ring to tell her I’ve arrived. Can you tell me where there’s a phone box?”
“Oh!” he said. “There’s a phone downstairs.”
When at last we did meet up, Danny explained the misunderstanding to me.
“Don’t worry,” she said to me. “I had many difficulties at first. There are lots of words which the Americans use differently in meaning from us British. You’ll soon get used to all the funny things they say. But most of the time British and American people can understand each other!”

A recent study published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research adds to the evidence and shows how little time it takes to get the benefits of being in the park Spending just 30 minutes in a park — even if you don’t exercise while you’re there — is enough to improve well-being, according to the research.
For the study, researchers surveyed 94 adults who visited one of three urban parks, over the summer and fall. They were given fitness trackers to measure physical activity but were not told what to do in the park or how long to stay. Each person also answered questions about their life satisfaction and mood — which were used to calculate the score of subjective well-being before and after their park visit. The average park visit lasted 32 minutes and well-being scores rose during the park visit in 90% of people. “People may go to the park and just enjoy nature. They relax and reduce stress, and then feel more happy.” study co-author Hon Yuen says.
It is for all of these reasons that the medical community is increasingly viewing green space as a great place where their patients can obtain physical and mental health benefits. Some physicians, like Robert Zarr, are even writing prescriptions for it. By writing nature prescriptions — alongside medical prescriptions, when necessary — physicians are encouraging their patients to go outdoors and take advantage of what many view to be free medicine. He said, “It’s about making a positive choice in their life rather than a discouraging choice like ‘they’re sick; take a pill. It just seems so much more supportive.”
