“There’s a mistake. Moonlight you guys won best picture. ”
And with those words, producer Jordan Horowitz of La La Land, told the cast and crew of a competing film that it had won the Oscars’ biggest award. Presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were given the wrong category’s envelope before they went on stage.
Beatty was clearly confused about what he saw when he opened the envelope, but Dunaway read the name of the film listed below Stone’s name. The actors and producers from La La Land left their seats and filled the stage to accept their Oscar statues. They gave many speeches before Horowitz interrupted. “This is not a joke. Moonlight has won best picture, ”he said. He took the card from Beatty and held it up for the cameras. “Moonlight. Best Picture, ”he said as the camera moved closer.
The show’s host, Jimmy Kimmel, made the best of the situation. He went up to Beatty, and exclaimed “Warren. What did you do? ” Kimmel also said, “Personally, I blame Steve Harvey. ”That was in reference to the mistake Harvey made in 2015 at the Miss Universe pageant. He announced the wrong winner, first saying it was the contestant from Colombia, and then realizing the correct winner was actually from the Philippines.
Once order had been restored, Beatty tried to explain what happened, saying he had been given the wrong envelope. Barry Jenkins is the writer and director of Moonlight. Once he reached the stage, he said “Even in my dreams, this cannot be true. ” Stone, happy to have won the best actress award, later said, “Is that the craziest Oscar moment of all time? Cool! ”
Many people are wondering how the mistake was made. The accounting firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers has been handling Oscar votes for over 80 years without any problems. The firm apologized to all of the people who were made uncomfortable by the mistake. It promised to investigate what caused the error.
Horowitz is being credited for staying calm and stopping the show to correct the error. People are calling him “gracious, ” “a great producer, ” and “classy. ”Even Jenkins said “much respect to that dude. ”

Aged 78, he is one of the workers with first-hand experience of this international adventure: the rescue of the Ramesses II temples in Egypt from the rising waters of the Aswan High Dam.
A green hand from the marble (大理石) caves of Carrara who helped cut the temples of Abu Simbel into blocks, Paoli attended the event celebrating the 50th anniversary (周年纪念) of the adventure, hosted by Salini Impregilo and the Museo Egizio (Egyptian Museum) in Turin, Italy.
On February 4, 2019, the rescue of the world heritage site was celebrated at an event held at the museum with Chief Executive Pietro Salini, Museo Egizio Director Christian Greco and UNESCO Regional Director Ana Luiza Thompson-Flores attending.
“Taking down two temples piece by piece, putting them back together elsewhere and perfectly rebuilding the landforms (地貌) around them was a great idea and showed us a new frontier (领域) for cultural protection,” said Salini. “It also showed the world that progress did not have to come at the expense of a world heritage site. Today, 50 years after this fantastic project, we remember with great admiration all those people from different countries and cultures, who, with their unique skills, achieved this impressive achievement for future generations.”
The work of moving the temples, in which Impregilo took part, was done with the support of 50 countries and some 2, 000 people in little more than 1,100 days.
This unique project is also being celebrated with the publication of “Nubiana”, a multimedia tome (多媒体巨著) that tells the story of the temples built more than 3,000 years ago in honour of the great Pharaoh Ramesses II. It also describes the engineering challenges of their rescue by international teamwork.

But that is not why she is smiling right now. Tonight, in a beautiful long dress, with her hair perfectly curled, she is excited to be going to prom. A prom is a formal dance for high school students that’s usually at the end of the year.
Prom was born in the United States more than 100 years ago and has spread to other parts of the world. In America, it has become an industry similar to the wedding business. A study done by the American financial company, Visa, found that, on average, an American family spends more than 900 dollars on prom.
Much of it is spent on what the young adults wear to the formal dance. Gowns (礼服) often cost hundreds of dollars. And then there are costs linked to hair and makeup, flowers for prom dates, dinner and transportation.
It adds up. But some students find ways to make the event less expensive. “I borrowed my dress,” says Maggie Kinnett. Like Hope, Maggie is a senior at Yorktown High School in Arlington. She got her makeup done without cost by a professional who is a family friend.
Hope also cuts costs. She bought her dress online for far less than she would have paid in the stores. She also did her own hair. Besides, many girls choose to get ready for the prom with friends. They might get their hair done at a beauty shop together. They might hire a professional make-up artist for a few hours to share the costs.
Probably the least costly thing about prom is the ticket to the dance. Yorktown held its event at a hotel in Arlington. The tickets were $ 45.

The film Searching follows David Kim, the father of Margot, a teenage girl who disappears. To help with the investigation, the father is asked to look into Margot’s personal life. The more he discovers, the more he realizes he knew nothing about his daughter. The openmouthed father learns that she made strange money transfers and participated in online chat rooms. In the film, we see how technology is important but unreliable. While it helps David to uncover information, it asks a question: how much should we really believe?
The film shows how real life can be distorted (扭曲) through Margot’s Facebook account. She has a few hundred friends on Facebook but none in real life. It highlights how the Internet can show a false representation of someone. Furthermore, the content of her messages is miscommunicated. Social media quickly turns ugly as an innocent hashtag (话题标签) to find Margot soon turns to the public blaming the father: #thefatherdidit. With social media, everyone has a voice and hidden purposes, and even her classmates only pretend to care about her to use the publicity to promote themselves.
The film is recorded only via a computer screen rather than having the standard camera shots. This fairly new approach is refreshing. The father’s computer changes over the years from Windows to a Macbook. The filming is very cleverly done and we begin to forget that it’s all through a computer screen.
The film manages to draw the attention and hearts of the audience. It has a wonderful storyline and fresh perspective (视角) that mirrors technology in our own lives, making it of cultural and personal significance. So, if you’re searching for a film to get lost in, this is the film for you.

They give funny speeches, tell jokes and make humorous body movements. Their humor entertains and helps ease the stress of crowds of busy, young people. However, club member Ariella Shua says comedy is serious work. She says she has become a better observer of what is going on around her ever since. She does not go anywhere without bringing something on which she can take notes. Students write all their own materials. Then, in weekly club meetings, they try out that material to see what works and what doesn’t. So, it starts as an individual project for themselves and becomes a group effort.
Last year, Harry Kuperstein joined the club and discovered it was a natural fit. Noticing the funny qualities of different situations improved his way of looking at the world. Becoming an active member also helped him work on the future skills he will need as a medical doctor. It helps him talk to patients as a doctor and make him a better public speaker.
Despite the group meetings, rewrites and rehearsals, some ideas just are not funny. Club member Benjamin Monteagudo said performing in front of a group of students does not mean comedians will not receive strong criticism. Last year, they came up with an idea to keep the audience involved and get their opinions.
They called it “Tomato Show”, where if they were performing very badly on stage, they just let the audience throw tomatoes at them to kind of roll with the joke. So, they spent their entire budget on a big box of 300 soft tomatoes. They gave them to the audience, and it was the best show ever.

There were eight Chinese between the ages of 24 and 37 on the Titanic, sharing one 59-pound third-class ticket, but only six survived from its sinking. When they arrived, in the United States, they were not helped like the other 705 survivors. Instead they were forced to leave the country within 24 hours, because of the Chinese Exclusion Act signed in 1882.
Some westerners questioned the six Chinese survivors as stowaways (偷渡者) and claimed that they survived because they secretly climbed on the lifeboat or dressed as women to board lifeboats.
But after visiting foreign documents, museums and cooperating with American and Chinese historians, Jones believes they did not do anything disgraceful (不光彩的) in order to survive the disaster. This is not only a story about the survivors of Titanic, but also a story of a group of brave Chinese people exploring the outside world at that time, he said.
When the ship hit an iceberg, like other third-class passengers the eight Chinese were released from the locked gates at last, but not allowed to board the lifeboat. Luckily, four of them boarded a small broken boat, and one was rescued by another lifeboat. Another one, Fang Lang, floated on a piece of wooden board in the sea. The only returning lifeboat saved him from freezing.
To restore (还原) their real stories, Jones and his team found Fang Lang’s son in Wisconsin, US. Also, Jones will visit Taishan city in south China’s Guangdong province, recorded as the survivors’ hometown. The filmmakers also established a website, whoarethesix. com, for more clues.
Ordinarily, people think of Titanic as a story of rich white people, but don’t know there were people from all over the world, including Chinese. Their stories are never told, Jones said.
The documentary (纪录片) The Six is expected to be released in China late this year.

According to the locals in the area, the little bear had been running on land with a plastic tub on his head for three to four days, but he somehow got into the water, worsening his condition.
The bear could be seen swimming in fear and shifting away from the family as they edged the boat closer. He was terrified, but the tub was quickly filled with water and he was in danger of drowning.
"Go a little faster, Brady. Get in front of him," Tricia instructed her son to drive the boat closer to the animal. Brian got close to the bear and tried to pull the tub out, but it had become too slippery. Brian lost his control, but he wasn't discouraged because the bear's ears had managed to come loose. That meant the plastic tub wasn't stuck and he just had to get closer.
The rescue lasted about five minutes and they made several attempts before the tub finally came off. Brady made the boat circle around the bear and his father gave one last try that set the animal free. Once the tub came off, the bear was able to swim easily to the shore and catch a much-needed break.
The family was extremely relieved as Tricia called out to the swimming animal, "Swim happily.''
"We were so excited! We did our good deed for the day. It felt good to help the poor bear. You don't like to see animals struggle." Tricia later said in an interview.
When the Hurts returned to their resort, everyone offered their gratitude. Tracy, a native, said, "No one else had been able to help the bear for several days as it struggled with the deadly tub on its head. We need more people like the Hurts!"

His sunglasses masked his eyes, but I knew he wasn't looking at the brochure: he hadn't turned a page for the last ten minutes. As I brought him his dishes, he coughed up a "thank you" and looked at me briefly I tried not to stare at the tiny scar across his left eyebrow.

Reading the brain’s electrical signals, a technique called electroencephalography (EEG), started over 100 years ago and is now routine. It generally involves placing non-invasive electrodes (非侵入式电极) on the scalp (头皮), though it sometimes requires the invasive insertion of wires into the scalp or the brain. Non-invasive EEG provides useful information, and can even be used to do things like playing computer games. Invasive EEG offers more accurate readings from the nerve cells in the brain, though at greater risk because of the surgery involved. The device Gertrude carries, known technically as a brain-computer interface (接口), carries invasiveness one stage further by making the EEG recorder a potentially permanent implant.
Along with this improved interface, Neuralink has built a robot that will implant it. To do so, the robot first takes a high-resolution scan of the recipient’s brain. Using this, it is able to sew the electrode threads into place with a precision that avoids any blood tubes in the area, which reduces the risk of damage during surgery. The robot can put the interface in place in less than an hour. General anesthesia (麻醉) is not needed for the procedure.
One challenge the firm wants to tackle is sending electrical signals into the brain. Mr. Musk says this will require a range of inputs including delicate stimulation and large amounts of currents. The point of doing so will be to establish two-way communications. This could allow entirely new areas of treatment to be explored. Besides epilepsy (癫痫) prevention, such brain stimulation might also work to treat depression. More important in the long run, it is also essential to Musk’s vision of widespread engagement between people and machines. This, he hopes, will result in a future where memories can be downloaded and stored elsewhere, and humans can form a relationship with AI that is mutually dependent and beneficial.
Not everyone is impressed. Critics worry that Neuralink is too secretive, and that Mr. Musk’s vision promises more than he can deliver. He does, though, have a record of doing what he says he is going to, despite the fact that sometimes not as rapidly as he says he will. He more or less single-handedly introduced battery-electric cars to the market and he built a successful space-rocket business out of nothing. Brains are a lot more complicated than cars, and even than rocket science. But do not bet against the coming into being at some point of the Musk vision of brains and computers working together directly.
1. What can we learn about EEG?A.EEG requires the insertion of electrodes. |

Mutianyu Great Wall
Your trip to Beijing isn't really complete without seeing one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World” ,the Great Wall of China. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is by far the most well-preserved of all. With its huge lake and hilltop views, the palace offers you a pastoral escape into the landscape of traditional Chinese paintings. The Summer Palace was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998.
798 Art Zone
This would be on the top of my list! Named after the 798 factory that was built in the 1950s, the art zone is home to various galleries, design studios, art exhibition spaces, fashionable shops and bars. You could easily spend half your day wandering around the complex, feeling the contrast of the present and the past.
Sichuan Provincial Restaurant
